Game Reports / Re: Achievement unlocked: maxing the feodum
« on: March 15, 2014, 06:53:47 pm »
I actually think I personally would have gone for the engine here.  I would have built up more, gotten, I don't know, maybe five goons in play with more buys, and gotten more points.  I think if he hadn't started getting points sooner he could have won.  The one thing against it is no trashing.
And no village besides University. So... let me try to do the math, if you have five goons, one potion, one silver, 10 start cards you get to 17. Let's say you do your mega turn with tactician, then you start with 10 cards and 2 actions. So you need another 3 universities to get to 5 actions. But then you have 10 more cards to draw. Additing one smithy and one university makes you effectively draw one more card, so you need 10 of both. That makes 13 universities, 10 smithies, 5 goons and a tactician... to draw your whole deck. That's obviously impossible, so you have to go for smaller turns with just two or three goons. But then you can't make points with them because that would junk your deck. So... no, I don't think an engine is strong enough here.

I disagree with this. There's simply too much potential for + buy. Market Square gives an absurd amount of points when combined with Goons. Even with just 3 three goons you can get upwards of 40 VP chips in one turn. With four that goes up to 60, which can be combined with buying points. I think the engine is going to win here 5/6 times.

Help! / Re: what should I have done differently?

A few things jump out to me. Despite it's lack of any real engine, there are a couple of intriguing paths to take.

The simplest is going to be Masq/BM. It's quite strong, and is very consistent. Even a sub-optimally played deck can get 4 Provinces in 13-15 turns.

The other option is the interesting one. It would consist of a Venture stack with Tunnel, Hoard, and Masquerade. Perhaps Moneylender would be strong as well, but I think that Masq would fill the trashing role well enough. On 3-4$ you would pick up 2 Masquerades, and after that Silver or Tunnel, depending on how long the game has gone. 5$ would be Venture, and 6$ would be a single Hoard, then Gold. Picking up extra green with the Hoard hurts even less than normal due to the Venture, so don't be stingy!

Here you open 5/2, which is really unfortunate. I think the best option is to just bite the bullet and pick up a Masquerade right away. Treasury is extremely weak here, and will never be better than Venture; as there's no way to capitalize on the bottom half. BM isn't helped by it at all, and that's what this board is. On turn 8 you pick up a Gold, which should have been a Hoard. You take both Scheme and Moneylender over Silver, which should be avoided in BM.

The main reason you lost here is that you didn't have any economy. You end the game with just one Silver and one Gold, which even with the Treasuries just isn't enough to buy anything. On these sorts of boards where there isn't an engine you have to prioritize treasures over actions more often than you might expect. Practice makes perfect!

Herald here is awful. It lacks both gainers to rapidly increase your action density, and trashing to increase it's likelihood to hit. I think that the dominate strategy could either be a Hunting Party stack with Hoard, or a standard Governor stack.Taxman isn't an awful terminal here, but I think that Woodcutter for the +buy would be more important in a HP stack.

Game Reports / Re: The biggest non-engine ever... where we both go for it

Gardens has a lot going for it, with the Squires and also Death Cart.

On the other hand, that's not like unbeatable. The engine has weak draw... the only draw is Mercenary. But with good trashing, you can be throning Treasuries and Merchant Ships, which is pretty good.

I don't know for sure, but I'd probably bet on the engine.

Look at the log. We both bet on the engine, it didn't turn out very well at all.

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Goko rating system
« on: February 15, 2014, 07:31:14 am »
Playing against strong players is a good way to learn, so it's possible these 3723 pts players with their 4000+ games are trying to learn.
This. One thousand times this.

I think it's... pathetic, in a way. It's like saying: "I'm actually better than other players at my rating, I've just been unlucky." that's something a lot of people want to believe, especially if they're unhappy with their current rating.

also, they could see their rating being more likely to go up when playing vs high ranked opponents. i generally feel like, if your only goal was to get your rating up, you should choose opponents that are as high ranked as possible. you're obviously less likely to win, but i feel like goko factors rating differences too much. and even if that isn't correct, some people will think it is.

either way, it makes you look kind of bad, but it's still legit.
The best way to learn is to watch better players do their magic. Be that through videos, articles, or playing against them, it doesn't matter. If you mind playing against lower rated players then that's fine, just don't play with them. But keep in mind that it is the best way to get better at the game.

I would think Squire/Gardens would work pretty well.  I never realized how good it was until one time I had this turn:

Play Squire (+$1) for +2 Actions
Play Squire (+$1) for +2 Buys
Play Squire (+$1) for +2 Buys
Play Copper
Buy Gardens and four Coppers
Is two Coppers better than a Silver? Sounds like Silver would make buying Duchies easier.
That was my thought as well. I think it would be too easy to snipe gardens, leaving the Squire player with no real way to buy provinces, or maybe even duchies.

Code: [Select]
Squire, Fortune Teller, Urchin, Village, Death Cart, Gardens, Scavenger, Throne Room, Merchant Ship, Treasury
The log: http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20140214/log.50a44d70e4b09c3f1c235128.1392449888947.txt

It looks so tempting. We've all seen those engines that just squeak by with barely any draw. I saw this board and my gut instinct was to go for Merchant Ship/BM. However, fancy play syndrome got the best of both me and my opponent, and we fruitlessly tried to make the best what was offered. I open Scavenger/Urchin while he opens Urchin/Urchin. We don't get our Urchin's to collide until turn 8 and 7 respectively, and it all goes downhill from there. Many turns were spent picking up engine parts piecemeal trying to form some sort of money base. It just doesn't happen, and the provinces don't run out until turn... (wait for it) 22.

About halfway through the game Jog and I both shared each other's pain, and it was one of those games where you can't help but laugh as your deck shudders to get to a province. I think the saving grace here was Merchant Ship, which allowed me to get some sort of money base each turn. Hitting $8 is much easier when you have a throned Merchant Ship in play.

It raises the question, is there any scenario here where the engine is stronger than just BM of some sort? Jog suggest possibly Squire/Gardens, but I dont have much experience with that. I think that a money strategy is just stronger here, but I've been wrong before. Whatever the answer, it was an amusing game to say the least.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Counter to pirate ship?
« on: February 09, 2014, 01:53:10 am »
Often, (in the scenarios you describe) the best bet will still be a money based strategy. Pirate Ship's problem is it is just too slow. If there are no villages, Pirate Ship loses it's main perk, being able to be played multiple times a turn.

Pirate Ship is one of those cards that just seems like it should excel, but falls short of expectations most times. It has a large ramp up time where it often actively helps your opponents deck while providing no benefit. The more you ramp it up the harder it becomes to hit treasures, which if there are no ways to play it several times a turn severely hampers its use. Pirate Ship is also very weak against trashing as it will often only become a terminal gold, which is just not worth it considering the amount of turns it does nothing.

However, there are some boards where it shines. Combined with King's Court and +buy it can be a very respectable source of coin. It can be a major factor on whether to go for an engine or a terminal money strategy. If there is a way to play Pirate Ship multiple times every turn it becomes an absolute powerhouse. You'll be swimming in coin, so make sure you have plenty of +buy.

Puzzles and Challenges / Re: Trash almost all cards
« on: January 28, 2014, 10:22:26 pm »
It is possible to trash all cards isn't it? Chapel / Death Cart leaves nothing in your deck.

You've probably already read this, but the link in my signature might help you out, Destierro. I use the same sleeves and to get them to fit in the box, you have to store them vertically. It requires a little bit of modifying the box to make it work, but it's a beautiful thing :)

I haven't actually. That's an interesting idea. My solution has them sideways, but I might try to re-engineer it to be vertical. My worry was that the top of the cards would get bent against the top of the case, is that not a problem?

Grrrr, open beta is US only.
Then make a US account? This is the internet, be resourceful!

My solution is the Hobby Lobby case, but as I use the Fantasy Purple card sleeves, all the cards don't quite fit in the box. I'm still at a loss at what to do with the new expansion. If you don't want to use sleeves (or don't have all the sets), then http://shop.hobbylobby.com/products/wooden-artist-case-125005/ works very well.

Game Reports / Re: Procession of Rats!
« on: January 16, 2014, 09:15:33 am »
Well, you get to draw a card before you trash, and another before you trash again. also, it's net +2 cards, not three, because proccession-rats took up two spots in hand.
But you draw a card from trashing rats. It increases the handsize like a lab is what I meant.

Game Reports / Re: Procession of Rats!
« on: January 15, 2014, 10:20:25 pm »
By the time your Procession and Rats collide, it's likely you won't want to trash 2 cards, if you've been trashing with rats beforehand. It makes Procession ill-suited to capitalize on Rat's strengths. Rats is great with TfB, just not Procession.

Also, look at the log. When Rabid ended the game, he had no way to ever get Provinces. Even getting more 6$ cards would have been a stretch. The Rats destroyed his economy, and if he hadn't pulled out a clever win, he would have lost in the end game.

Of course it's "a lot" better.  You get an extra card, an extra action, you trash a rats, and you get a $5 cost action.  That's way, way better.

Procession Rats becomes (Net) +2 Actions, +3 Cards, Trash 2 non-Rats, Gain a Rats, Gain a 5$ card. Sure it looks like it's better, but it will be hard to put together a hand where you have Procession / Rats / Two cards you want to trash after the second collision. I would much rather use my procession on a Plaza or a Cultist.

Processioning Rats is rarely a good idea, as it gives you two more rats, and only one 5 cost card.
It's a lot better than just playing two Rats, which is already very good in some situations.

I wouldn't go as far as to say it's a lot better. Strictly speaking, it does give more benefits than playing two rats, but at the cost of wasting your procession. That procession could have much better targets, and it can't hit those if your deck is mostly rats.

The outcome was certainly cool, but I really think that Rats is suicidal here. There's nothing to trash it that gives a real benefit. Farmland is the closest thing, and you used that, but I doubt it would beat some sort of Cultist/ Plaza engine. Processioning Rats is rarely a good idea, as it gives you two more rats, and only one 5 cost card.

The best part of this website is its guides and articles! Read these, the top ones will be most pertinent. http://dominionstrategy.com/category/general-strategy/articles/ They outline general strategies, and common dominion lingo. BM is short for Big Money, a strategy in which the player buys very few actions, generally one or two, and only treasure and victory cards. It is usually a strategy that works on very "weak" boards, or where there are lots of attacks that ruin decks.

If you ever are wondering about a particular card, chances are someone has already written a comprehensive guide on it.

One of the best ways to improve your game is to play against other people. The Goko AI is subpar at best, and on the more complex boards will often lose simply because some cards are nigh-impossible to simulate. Playing against people helps in many different ways. It raises the bar, so you're no longer trying to beat a rote AI that will do the same thing every game, but you have to compete with a much better opponent. It forces you to challenge yourself, setting the bar much higher than you would get with the computer.

On your gameplay, I would suggest getting a Trading Post early on, and going for some sort of Throne Room / Bridge engine with Laboratory and Village/Smithy for draw. Possibly throw a Saboteur in the mix. On turn 15 you bought a Throne Room, an Estate would have been better as the game was almost over. If you're going for a Smithy BM strategy, then Laboratory is better suited as a Silver.

I'm not sure if there is an expand option, but you can forward a link from Goko, where it saves all the logs. (http://i.imgur.com/dlwjiAZ.png)

Welcome to Dominion! I hope you enjoy the game as much as we all do!
