Dominion Online at Shuffle iT / Randomly getting kicked out of games
« on: February 11, 2020, 10:19:08 am »
Every so often when I am playing, I will randomly get logged out and not be able to join back in. Today I was playing with juan097 and I suddenly got to the endgame screen in a game with 2 other people I was watching before, and I'm not able to continue the game I was in. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

If you replace a Curse into an Estate it's like saying "no u"

Dominion General Discussion / Lessons learned
« on: November 14, 2019, 08:48:46 pm »
I made a Google doc for lessons I've learned from recent Dominion games. Every time I lose and realize why, I write it in there. So far I've lost 11 games learning these tips...

What lessons have you learned from losses? I will update this, hopefully not so regularly!

Dominion General Discussion / Teaching Dominion
« on: October 16, 2019, 08:35:38 pm »
Hi everyone!

I am signed up to teach a 1.5 hour class on how to play Dominion for this event at my school. A few questions:

* Are there any big things to keep in mind? Common misconceptions about the game that people have at first?

* What kingdoms should I set up? Do you think it would be possible to construct 2 mutually exclusive kingdoms of base set cards for 2 groups to play at once? Or should I order 2 copies of the base set?

* How much strategy should they be informed about before their first game?

Any input is appreciated, thanks!

Rules Questions / Ambassador + Beggar + Lighthouse + Triumph
« on: March 30, 2019, 11:47:39 am »
Sorry for even bringing this up, since it will almost never happen... Say you play a Beggar to gain Coppers to your hand, play Ambassador to return those Coppers to the supply but then your opponent has Lighthouse so they don't gain anything, then you buy the Copper back and then buy Triumph. Since you gained the same card twice in one turn, does it count once or twice for Triumph VP?

This would be a horrible addition, but some people might turn it on if it were added :P

Dominion General Discussion / Trashing the Engineer
« on: May 22, 2018, 11:41:08 pm »
When do you do it? Besides "depends on the board," do you think it's a good idea in general to get the extra early tempo from having two 4-cost cards in your deck, or build a bit more long-term and have one Engineer and one 4-cost?

Dominion General Discussion / Losing streaks
« on: April 11, 2018, 09:36:39 pm »
It seems like when I play Dominion Online, I'm in one of two modes- either I'm winning 75% of my games, or I'm losing all my games. It's sometimes hard to figure out which mode I'm in, but right now I'm pretty positive that I'm in the latter. Has anything similar happened to you? Do you think people tend to play worse when they're on losing streaks? Just curious.

Do they gain any particular insights about a board by playing without a real opponent (sorry Lord Rattington)?

Rules Questions / Tragic Hero/Necromancer
« on: November 20, 2017, 08:26:50 am »
This question might belong in GendoIkari's thread here, but since this is a rules question I thought I would put it here.

If there's a single Tragic Hero in the trash, and you play it with Necromancer and have 8 cards or more in hand after drawing, Tragic Hero trashes itself and you get a Treasure. Does it re-trash itself, turning itself back face-up to set up future Necromancer plays of the same Tragic Hero? Or does Tragic Hero expect to find itself in play, and when it doesn't, doesn't trash itself but you still get a Treasure?

Dominion General Discussion / Engines always better than BM?
« on: October 05, 2017, 08:46:17 pm »
"Always go for the engine"- that's one of my three pieces of Dominion wisdom that I tell myself during games. See, when I first started playing Dominion online, I was guilty of playing BM way too much, and against a skilled engine player I would almost always feel the consequences (watching my opponent play 5-minute turns, and losing) unless I got extremely lucky.

I've heard it said many times that a pro player knows when big money is the best thing on a board, and of course, that's sometimes going to be the case. But if there's anything that can reasonably be called an engine on a board, I feel like it's almost always just clearly better. The few times when I've seen money-like strategies beat engine-like strategies, it's either because the engine player didn't pick up enough of the key cards on the board, or wasn't watching the piles closely enough.

For example, let's consider a 3-card board with Village, Moat, and Market. Since there's no trashing, you'll never draw your deck. I guess the "good stuff" deck would open either Moat/Silver or Silver/Silver, and maybe stop at 2 Moats and get Markets with $5 hands. Now that seems much better than the engine, but believe it or not, I've actually seen the engine player pull it out most of the time on boards like this. Did the BM player play badly?

Advice is greatly appreciated, thanks.

Dominion General Discussion / DS blog complaint
« on: October 02, 2017, 01:30:00 pm »
First of all let me just say, despite the title, Iím really grateful to Beyond Awesome and the other blog admins for reviving the DS blog, and Iím glad some good articles have been brought into the spotlight which deserve more attention and could be useful for newer players.   I think the community in general was really happy about the revival of the DominionStrategy blog. A few big problems did exist with the old blog- it was not updated frequently, the articles eventually got outdated, and eventually, there just wasnít much to say that wasnít already on the forums or the wiki.

As a long-time lurker on the forums, I unfortunately have to say that Iím a bit disappointed after the first few weeks of reading the blog. The first articles were just copied from the forums, so I had already read them before. Sure, the articles were very high quality, and they went over points that experienced players could also benefit from. And Iím well aware that not everyone who now reads the blog has read them before- the whole blog isnít just for me.

But thereís also the issue that new posts are getting more rare and arenít on schedule. I know that itís hard to produce new content, especially on a game like Dominion which people have thought about intensely for the last several years. I also understand that you adults lead busy lives and at times have a lot of things to juggle at once, and that a blog about a board game might not be at the very top of your priorities.

Nevertheless, I think that if the articles are going to be copied from the forums, they should be posted more frequently, since that doesnít require too much effort from the team. If the team would rather take their time and produce something better, then that would certainly be fine, but firstly, they should say so and secondly, the final result shouldnít be an article that already exists.

I really hope Iím not making anyone upset here. As I said before, Iím thankful for all the effort that you guys have already put in, and I hope Iím not being too much of a jerk for stepping up to complain.

Dominion Online at Shuffle iT / Loading old games
« on: June 23, 2017, 06:56:06 pm »

I'm not sure if this is a reasonable request, but could we possibly be able to load old games with expansions without having to buy the expansions? That would be really helpful, since it's frustrating when people post IDs for games and I'm not able to load them. Thanks.

Dominion General Discussion / Double Jack?
« on: September 15, 2016, 12:05:05 am »
Sorry if this isn't in the right place.

I understand how single Smithy and triple gear work with BM, you're guaranteed to never collide. But double jack? Is it that if you draw both jacks in the same hand you can trash one of them?  :P
