Help! / Re: Alchemist/Chapel is a tie pre-ordained?

By the way,
Thank you each for the respectful manner that you've used to correct my less than optimum game play.  You make the forum enjoyable to read and participate in (although it's been many months since I've done so.)

Thank you everybody for your input.  I used Geronimoo's Simulator (one Haggler after the first HP).  HP/Haggler dominates.  Alc/Haggler wins <10% of the time.  Now, after ftl's post, I'll try opening w/ Haggler.

Edit:  In the simulator, it doesn't seem to make any difference whether one opens Haggler or HP.

Here's the game thread:

I believe that we both played this board about as well as could be played.  The game ended very quickly with a tie.  I'm not sure I could have improved this outcome.  Do you?

Game Reports / Re: City/Saboteurs is too slow to beat double Jacks
« on: March 23, 2012, 06:51:38 pm »
Well, this thread only show cases my own poor play :-\.  My opponent sab'd every single one of my provinces, which I had to replace with duchys in order to keep my vp count more than his.  He sab'd my one jack (which according to the strategy I had in mind and the one I reported was supposed to be two).  He sab'd my golds, so I could never get to that last province.  He resigned when he realized that I was going to three pile on duchies, cities, and sabs.

I had the right idea, against his strategy, just really poor execution.  And won anyway.

Thank you to everyone for your responses.  I see, now, how poor tunnel is as an open.  Did it ruin my chances in this game? Sounds like a resounding yep.  I've had good luck with Alchemist before, but I see how it can hurt with this board.  (although my opponent seemed to do well with it. . .)

Well, this is why I'm a level 3 player.  I'm learning to get better.  Your constructive criticism is well placed.  Again, Thanks.

Here's the game:
http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20120321-224227-269bcaa0.html

I opened with steward/Jack.  My opponent followed.

I just went through the game and reallized that I never bought my second jack. lol.  Here I was thinking, "Hah! Double Jacks for the win."  It's Jack/Steward for the win.  Hmmm.

I bet I would have gotten that last Province if I had had that second JoaT early in the game (instead of buying a silly city).

I got caught up in my opponent's strategy, thinking, "Ok, if you want to power up cities, I get a few and we'll do power-cities together."  Clearly I should have gotten my second Jack and won the game by turn 20.  I would not have even been posting this.

Ah,well.  A messy win is still a win, right?

Help! / Monument Beats Goons?

I am not (yet) a good Dominion player.  My opponent is not either.  I felt that I should have handily won this game concentrating on goons and witches.  I was handily defeated by my opponents unrelenting monuments.

Here's the board:
Alchemist, Black Market, Colony, Duke, Goons, Moneylender, Monument, Platinum, Potion, Silk Road, Swindler, Tunnel, and Witch.

Here's the game:
http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20120321-221126-f53a239e.html

I opened with potion to claim an alchemist lead.  I bought Moneylender to trash copper and gain goons early.  I didn't buy much money because I didn't believe that the game would go to 8 colonies. (I was right.)  I bought witch to clog my opponent's deck with curses

That at least was my early thoughts

One of the problem I ran into was the collision of goons and witches and no way to play both.  Alchemists get me two cards (nice) but only one action.

The game went interminably.  My opponent finally 3-piled with all of those monument points.  Seems that goons, with the vps that they gain could have kept up. . .

Help! / Wharf - Worker's Village - Island win by the skin of my teeth
« on: February 12, 2012, 07:15:38 pm »
I am new to Dominion (since Christmas) and have been enjoying playing on Isotropic.  Here's a game I won by one point (good enough, right?)

http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20120211-234624-fe31c636.html

Well, I wonder if I played this the best.  I never bought gold or silver.  In turn 11 I got a peddler and 7 copper. My wharves, villages and peddler got me 5 buys.  So I bought a province and the rest of the peddlers.

Here's the question:  Would this have played better if I had bought two islands instead of the province.  I would have been able to slide a province/estate out of the way.  On the other hand, we both bought provinces in each of the following hands, so I would have lost by one vp.

What's the "best" play in this situation?

Also, my opponent and I were discussing the game afterwards.  I felt that Wharves won the game for me.  He said that he was not convinced.  It was so close, that really perhaps I won out of pure dumb luck? ;)
