Dominion Isotropic / Isotropic games freezing up
« on: March 24, 2012, 03:36:56 pm »
Hey all, I've been having lots of problems lately with games freezing up on Isotropic. Anecdotally, this seems to happen most often when I'm prompted for some input either in the course of my turn (playing a cartographer, for instance) or in the cleanup phase (ie: herbalist).  After a minute or so, the game will get back to me and let me take my action, but other players are typically asking "wtf?!?" and getting a bit antsy. Especially when it happens every other turn.

Now this doesn't happen EVERY time I play these actions and I think it has happened in other instances as well, like when I'm just going to play treasures. I might say it's just me, but I've had it happen on two different computers, running different OSes and I've seen other folks having the problem too.

Anyone else see this or have anything helpful to add?

I hate this set... now there are a few cards that I like (crossroads!) and it's nice in the sense that there's a lot of manipulation that can be done with all the discarding, deck re-stacking, re-ordering and such... but there's just so much small text on all of these cards and all these choices make the games take a really long time... plus I think that while they give a sophisticated player lots of options, they'll probably create a wider gulf between the know-it-all who has studied and mastered the set and a relatively newer player... the learning curve feels a lot steeper than it did for any other set...

Game Reports / the fun of black market and fairgrounds

now my opponent didn't play this one especially well, so yeah, that's a caveat, but that's still a ridiculously valuable fairgrounds... also, for whatever reason, you'll never find this game log or any other record of me on the council room site... any ideas what's up with that?

I wonder if you say this in real life.  "Good luck on the exam!"  "I hope you fail so you can push down the curve and indirectly boost my grade."

if I'm in a competitive situation, I want to come out ahead... I especially don't want to lose simply because someone else better fortune than I do... that said, your example fails because the lack of good luck doesn't imply the presence of bad fortune... a more accurate sentiment would be "I hope you score one point worse than me" (aka: "I hope I score one point better than you"), and if I had been competitive about grades, maybe that would have been an accurate sentiment... but I wasn't, so it wasn't relevant...

but let's turn this around... do you really want all of your classmates to have good fortune on exams and end up with higher scores than you, pushing your grade down, no matter how proficient you are in the subject matter?  or, to put this back in the context of the game (where it really belongs), do you really want me to always have perfect draws?  always getting to play villages before smithies?  always having the right reaction card for your attacks?  always swindling/sabotaging your most critical cards?  I certainly wouldn't want that...

oooh... the thread I wanted to start when this forum was created... there are a LOT of cards I really don't like for a variety of reasons... possession, swindler and saboteur make the list because I feel like I'm entitled to my turns and the cards in my deck... tournament because of the tremendous snowballing advantage it gives the first player that hits the combo... pirate ship because those games tend to take forever, especially when there's no +$ +action kingdom cards... minion because those games take forever as people fish through their decks once the minion "engine" is rolling... king's court because of the massive swings that accompany the actions or lack thereof that it is drawn with...

but there's one card that nobody has mentioned thus far that I really don't like:  chapel, which I hate because much more often than not, it's a required buy... in most games, it takes away any other strategic choice... 13 of the top 27 openings involve chapel, nothing else comes close... it might be a little more interesting if it were a $4 card and someone opening 5/2 had to choose between mountebank or chapel, but as things are, there's no need to choose...

if I had to rank 'em, it's probably possession, tournament, minion, pirate ship and swindler as the top five, but I'm pretty much anti-all of 'em...

And frankly, I hope that you get horrible luck when you face me

This.
Or at least, I prefer it when my opponents don't have especially good luck... in fact, I sometimes reply to a "gl" with something along the lines of "may your luck be a little worse than mine"... because y'know what?  all else being equal, I'd rather have the better luck... not that wishing for it makes a lick of difference anyway...

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Tournament + Black Market

apropos nothing in particular, my absolute favorite type of game is a black market/fairgrounds game, preferably with colonies and a +actions card, since you'll typically end up with a fair number of terminals...
