You've mentioned that a couple cards (like Margrave) are a little strong and if you could, you'd make them more balanced by removing the +Buy or something. Are there any 2E cards like that, where if you could wave a wand to slightly nerf it, you would?

Some of the newer cards do tend to lean on the strong/low-risk side. Tea House comes to mind, almost strictly better than Mystic and only lacking Grand Market's +Buy but being quite a bit cheaper in comparison. Tiara feels very potent and versatile. Litter is another highly tempting card.

By and large though I'm impressed with how Dominion has mostly kept been kept pretty balanced. It's noteworthy how some of the strongest cards are still in the very first set, yet variants on those cards are still fun and interesting to play with. And as far as I know after hundreds of cards there still isn't one that's a straight-up improvement on another, even counting 1Es.

Thanks for the thorough replies! Makes sense when broken down like that. I'll keep rules questions in the right subforum next time.

Artisan and Rapid Expansion (Prophecy) -- what happens when I play Artisan here? Does the card go to my hand or get set aside?

And more broadly speaking, what gets priority when two cards contradict each other in this kind of way?

I wondered if that was the reason!

I just got my Rising Sun in today, looking forward to trying it out. I'm now curious how the colors of the box sides got decided though--this one has a blue hue almost identical to Seaside, when initially I expected it to be a bold red (which we don't really have yet), similar to the Japanese flag.

Yep, just got mine from Miniature Market! Excited to try it out with the family.

What's your favorite token type?

The art for Werewolf is cool but not very werewolf-y. How come?

Any update here?  So far 8 days and my FLGS (GameNerdz) still doesn't have it.
I've been checking and there doesn't seem to be an update on my end (Miniature Market). I do notice that Amazon apparently has them for sale and "In Stock," which seems to be new. Also, board game YouTube reviewer Tom Vassel had an unboxing video that briefly showed him with Rising Sun, which is the first time I'd actually seen proof that this game exists in physical form! (I'm still eager to see the sun tokens)

Yeah, I'd preordered around a month ago but there's still not a solid physical date. As an American game, why doesn't it hit the US before other regions?

Looking forward to it a lot though. I loved what I played of the Dailies and the set just has a real vibe to it thanks to the art and theming. Alley is particularly satisfying.

Well besides the obvious Harem...

-I'm surprised no one's mentioned Swashbuckler yet. She definitely seems less like a rough-and-tumble pirate and more like a young woman posing in costume for a Halloween picture.

-Peddler has a warm and friendly look to her. Makes me want to stock up whenever I have lots of actions and buys at the ready.

-Poacher looks kind of like your standard video game/RPG fantasy heroine, with the midriff and the modern silky hair. Don't be drawn in too much, though, or she'll leave you discarding cards like there's no tomorrow.

-Conclave is another anachronistic yet comely lady. And I'm probably the first person in history to use the phrase "anachronistic yet comely." Might make a good band name.

The real question is, which card does Donald X. find hottest? Who has the guts to ask him in the interview thread?

It's okay for a vanilla gainer.

But it's awesome in games with Trail. Workshop Trail all day, baby.

Generally speaking, I like to see if I can trash Coppers and Estates early. Consider that each Estate draw is essentially a dead draw. If you shuffle your deck 10 times before the game's end, that's 10 cards you draw that cannot be used PER Estate. Coppers have some use in buying stuff, but the sooner you can replace them with Silvers or Actions that give you money (or gain cards, or have some other utility), the better.

In my experience though, some of the best strategy for Dominion comes in a very simple rule of thumb: look for cards that go well together. Oasis is okay on its own (+1 Card, +1 Action, +1 Coin, discard a card). But combine it with, say, Trail (+1 Card, +1 Action, you may play this when it's discarded) and you've got something that's more powerful than either card alone. Playing them together nets you an extra Card and Action that you wouldn't get when playing them apart, and that can transform a weak turn into a great one--like if that extra card was a Smithy or something.

There are thousands if not millions of these interactions somewhere in Dominion and it's important to find them. They'll give you the advantage!

One of my favorite things about this game is that it's rarely about charging forward getting the "strongest" cards, but about buying cards at the right times, and using the right cards together. Combined with the dynamic way the kingdoms are different every time, and there's always something new to consider.

So in short, 1) trash your junk, and 2) combo your cards.

Thanks for the answers, it's been fascinating! I'm probably running low on things I'm wondering about now, but would you ever consider a "Promos" box expansion once there are enough of them? What about a "1st edition cards" expansion? Or is the game better without bringing back those cards (as they were cut for a reason such as newer cards making them outdated)?

Is there an official term for the game's currency? Like Peddler gives you +1 Card, +1 Action, +1...coin? Dollar? My own group tends to refer to it as simply "coin" (i.e. "I've got 2 Buys and 6 Coin..."). Early on I called it Gold but that didn't work for obvious reasons.

Thanks for answering. I've preordered (physical) Rising Sun and have enjoyed the games I've played with it digitally, but was Ninja making players discard every turn a concern? And unrelated but which kingdom card in Empires is your favorite?

Hi, I'm new to the forum and I love playing Dominion. Thanks for making it!

My questions involve combinations: do you ever make note of particularly fun kingdom sets, or have some sort of compendium of them? I always try out the recommended sets in each manual, but with only two per expansion combo they tend to run out quickly.

Likewise, when playtesting cards, is there a specific order or method involved (i.e. "Let's try half Rising Sun, half base. Now half Rising Sun, half Intrigue..." etc) in order to find interesting or broken combos? Does every card have to be played with every other card before expansions go out?

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Good kingdoms for newbies?

I love going for the big M kingdom with just base set to teach new players.
I don't mean money, I mean, cards that start with M.
Moat, Merchant, Mine, Moneylender, Market, Militia.
I've played a lot of games with new players and I find that every card in this set is really good at immediately showing a new player what they're trying to do in Dominion.
Moneylender in particular helps get out of the way that early question of, 'I trash a copper to gain a silver. Oh wait, it doesnt work like that?'.

The other 4 I generally put in are Cellar, Workshop, Smithy, Remodel. They're also good teaching cards, but also it's because I like to save the idea of a village or a lab until the second game.
Isn't this essentially the "First Game" kingdom listed in the base set suggestions?

It is a good set of cards. Although depending on the group, I'll sub Militia for Throne Room sometimes because attacks can be unpopular for newbies and Throne Room is such a fun, mildly tactical card.
