Dear opponent:

I'm sorry that you're a bad player and I crushed you,

Let me tell everyone about it.

That's not untrue.

Dear bparnold31;

I'm so sorry.

Yes, I did buy 9 Border Villages and 6 Torturers to go with them. And yes, I had to keep playing them for deck control. And yes, I was not really close to ending the game yet.

If you would only have gained a curse once in a while, you might have actually had something to do after turn 12.

I'm so sorry you were stuck in this abusive relationship.

Sincerely,
napking24

Well done Simon for taking the time to write an article. I've been meaning to do something as well and I wanted to give you some props for being confident enough to share your thoughts.

I think this article is very surface level. There's not much content of actual insight beyond "there are strong cards in dominion", "play with them", "go look up how to play with them elsewhere". You did list a few cards that you wanted to highlight, which is good. Perhaps you could directly link to some other articles or feedback that you found helpful at your level. Your opening section and replys have said that this style was your intention so I'm not going to critique this point further.

I think you could also add a section about "end-game play". It's one thing I have noticed on my climb through the 40s is that some players will practically give me the win with poor end-game play. If that's still something new to you, I would link to the Penultimate Province rule. It's a lesson that really helped boost my rating, despite being an old article before Landmarks were released.

I'd also add a section describing the different styles of decks; engine, slog, combo etc. (I know these definitions have been fluid within the community). For your target audience, I think these are key lessons to learn and feed into your other points regarding Alt VPs, Landmarks and Events. With these concepts, it helps encourage the thought process of analysing the kingdom for which kind of game it will be, which I think is your key message.

Good Luck and Have Fun

I can see why a negative artifact doesn't work out. If it's earned on-gain, then someone gets stuck with it for the rest of the game and the effect can't be too debilitating to decide the game. If it's earned on-play, then either the same problem as before or it'll just get traded around and nobody really suffers from it.
My out-of-the-box thinking starts looking at earned on-trash on a card you want to trash-for-benefit, maybe peddler-style. Or something like IGG. Starting to get complicated. I think it also comes down to that it's easy to ignore or forget bad effects that hurt you (in table-play) if it's not a card you are playing right now.

One final point: Villain can only ever discard down to 4 and usually only hits once-per-turn. Was a guarantee of hitting a "good" card too high in junking games?

I gave spices a 7.

My initiial reaction with Spices (and Silk Merchant as well) is that as I get better at Dominion, I'm starting to heavily value any card that gives +buy. Having this effect on a treasure is always appealing since you don't have to waste action space on it. I guessed that my rating of 7 was likely overvalued, AdamHorton releasing his poll results supported that idea, but this thread is making me realize that 7 is where it should be.

I already shared this on the reddit thread and I'm gonna share here too. I've also added some new charts since yesterday.

Explanation of Violin Plots

Re:research

Most duration cards are great for reliability, starting with extra stuff next turn is strong.

Research is getting above average ratings, which I believe is due to the heuristic that 1 mega turn is better than 2 okay turns. It's a non-terminal trasher, that you can get in your opening shuffle. That alone should give it a good rating. The rest of the game-play will be determined by what else is in the kingdom, and skilled play. I feel like it's a high-skill card because blindly trashing good cards can easily backfire, as you say. Cards can miss shuffle, not enough +actions next turn, not enough +buys next turn.

I'm also surprised by Flag Bearer. It's got slightly below average rating, but has a huge variation in opinion though. Which I think stems from how people rate cards. Using Adam's criteria, I feel like it's a "support card in most decks" by itself (7) but "is almost never ignorable" (9). If you don't play with it, you're allowing your opponent a huge advantage for $4 and a card slot. I leaned on the low side at 7 because you don't want to be the first to buy it. That still makes it "above average". I'm very curious to play games with it to see how the fight over artifacts plays out.
