Game Reports / Re: Why I hate 4-player
« on: February 29, 2012, 01:36:37 pm »
Generally there are three goals one can play for in a game:

1. To win. 2nd place is the same as 4th place.
2. Rank. The difference between 2nd and 1st is comparable to 4th and 3rd.
3. Total score. You want as many points as possible and don't care about the other players.

#3 might be valid in bowling or poker but usually isn't appropriate for board games. I have heard of players refusing to buy the last province because they want to see how many points their goons can score.

On Isotropic I play #2 because that's how rank is calculated so I assume that's the implicit contract. For most Euro style games I weigh #1 and #2 fairly equally. If I'm in third I'll take a reasonable longshot to get 1st but I won't take a one in a million risk.

I agree that it's frustrating when you are playing for different goals than your opponent and I used to wish games rules would provide guidance (but I've since lightened up).

It seems that Treasure Map would be a good counter to Ghost Ship.

Game Reports / Sometimes Embargo is a Lot of Fun

This was a money game that ended in 16 turns with gold and silver embargoed.

Remake is why the game was so short but the real star of the show was Mine, both for turning silver into embargoed gold, and to be remade directly into gold.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Province vs Colony

I recently had a goon-ghost ship game with embargoed platinum. My strategy was to go for provinces.

It didnt work out because my opponent loaded up noble brigands and we three piled duchies, goons, pearl diver.

Monopoly  $3
Action - Reaction

Action: +1 card, +1 action
Reaction: when an opponent plays a card for which you possess the most tokens, reveal this card  He chooses:
1. He gains a curse, you gain +1 vp. Or
2. He trashes the card, you gain the card

At the start of the game put 10 token on each Kingdom pile, a different color per pile. When a players gains a card he gains an associated token.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Favorite thematic cards

Chapel was the first time I noticed any theme. The chapel is the place where you get rid of your curses.

My favorite thematic use for the moat is to keep the Bureaucrats out.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: How often would you like to use Colonies?

Just a quick suggestion: if you're going to abbreviate card names it might be a good idea to say the whole name first and then abbreviate it from then on. I assume SR = Silk Road, FG = Fairgrounds. The only HT I can think of is Horse Traders, but I'm not sure if they are relevant enough to mention... maybe for the +buys. Anyway. Just a suggestion.

Thank you. I was going crazy trying to figure out how a Horse Traders could make Fool's Gold worth $6.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Keeping Score
« on: November 01, 2011, 11:04:16 am »
If you are using a non-standard aid without informing your opponent it falls somewhere between "poor form" and "cheating". For Dominion this shouldn't be an issue. In an FtF game you can easily explain why you need your score pad. On Isotropic there is a score tracker (although I can't figure out how to activate it). If you are using a point tracker that isn't the built-in one... Why? Just get out of the moral grey area and use what is provided.

I find the iPhone playable solitaire. Between misclicks, inability to drag, and trouble selecting boxes I would only play a casual game with a friend.

Game Reports / Re: less than obvious Hinterlands Synergies

I finished a 3'er with a board like this:
crossroads, silk road, nobles, noble thief, torturer, jack of all trades, stables, develop, feast, adventurer

The obvious path is crossroads & nobles. What was not obvious to me was reverse big-money. Every turn I had a large hand with a lot of copper. I was concerned when the thieves quickly stole my silver but they fed me enough copper to allow me to buy provinces but didn't overload me like mountebanks might.

I usually ignore develop, but I think it is quite good here with valuable cards from $2-$6 and my opponents often could ignore my torturer by taking the curse in hand and developing it.
