Dominion General Discussion / Re: Any Gossip About Fall 2011 Expansion?
« on: August 08, 2011, 04:19:14 pm »
From Wikipedia:

"Hinterland" was borrowed from German, where it means literally the land behind (a city, a port or similar),[1] with the English cognate hind land.[2] In English, the term was first used in 1888 by George Chisholm in his work Handbook of Commercial Geography.[3] In German this word sometimes also describes the part of a country where only a few people live and where the infrastructure is underdeveloped; although "Provinz" (equal to "province") is more common. The direct analogy in English is "back country" or "the countryside". See also The Bush of Alaskan and The Outback of Australian usage.

"Hinterland" means a rural area surrounding the urban catchment of large cities or agglomerations. It is characterized by a less dense population and infrastructure. In shipping usage, a port's hinterland is the area that it serves, both for imports and for exports. The size of a hinterland can depend on geography, but also on the ease, speed, and cost of transportation between the port and the hinterland.[4]

Wild speculation time:
- This set will be, in some ways, the opposite of Prosperity (as previously speculated by Davio). It's about people leaving the hustle and bustle of city life to strike out into harsh new territory. Resources will be scarce, and people will have to make the best of what little they have. Estates and coppers will rise in value in the Hinterlands.
- There will be cards that punish 'city slickers', as in high costing cards. Something like Saboteur, but hopefully much, much, much better.
- There will be a card called 'Fur Trapper'. Because there's always plenty of cash to be made from slaughtering newfound species!

I was hoping for something that made cursing your opponents dangerous, such as a VP card that gives you 1 VP per 2 curses in your deck, or maybe allows you to discard curses for monetary benefit (better than Vault/Secret Chamber), but Hinterlands doesn't strike me as the right fit from a flavour perspective. Of course, I could be way off track.... which is dangerous in the HINTERLANDS!

Puzzles and Challenges / Re: Puzzle: The Kingmaker
« on: August 08, 2011, 12:15:42 pm »
This will allow you to play kingmaker and gain 6 points, or ignore action 4 and do nothing, but not stay neutral and gain 2:

Some assumptions: Each opponent has 2 Provinces. Opponent 1 has one Duchy, Opponent 2 has five Duchies, and Opponent 3 has six Duchies (and two curses). All other VP's have come from VP tokens. There are 3 Provinces left, and the Duchy pile is the other empty pile. The kingdom cards are Peddler, Fairgrounds, Duke, Rabble, King's Court, Throne Room, Swindler, Bishop, Witch and Village.
1. Play Throne Room.
2. Use it to play King's Court.
3. Use it to play Rabble. After drawing a lot of nothing and a Swindler, each opponent ends up with a Duchy and 2 Provinces on top of their deck, in any order.
I have no actions left. However, I can now either opt to not play the Swindler using King's Court, and do nothing, or:
4. Use King's Court to play Swindler. Then, I turn all Duchies into Rabbles/Witches, and all Provinces into Peddlers, except where otherwise stated. The final scores are shown in player order (not including myself) after each combination:

1,2,3 - Each player gets 1 province (28, 24, 19)
1,3,2 - P1 gets 2 provinces, P3 gets 1 province and a duke (34, 18, 24)
2,1,3 - P2 gets 2 provinces and a duke, P1 gets 1 province (28, 34, 13)
2,3,1 - P2 gets 2 provinces and a duke, P3 gets 1 province and a duke (22, 34, 24)
3,1,2 - P3 gets 2 provinces and a duke, P1 gets 1 province (28, 18, 29)
3,2,1 - P3 gets 2 provinces and a duke, P2 gets 1 province and a duke (22, 28, 29)

Finally, buy a fairgrounds for 6 coin, and it's worth 6 VP because I cleverly bought 1 of every kingdom card and treasure during the game (no wonder I am in last place). Note that in 1 of these outcomes, this will place you higher than opponent 3, and in another 2 outcomes, you will be tied for 3rd place with player 2.

Yes, it's not perfect but it is satisfying enough for me. Very interesting puzzle!

3. They each have an animal name hidden in them: Bureaucrat, Harem, and Navigator.

Dominion Isotropic / Re: Decline of civility on isotropic?

Get enough people together for anything and there will always be at least a couple of arseholes. The decline in civility is directly related to an increase in Isotropic's playerbase - no bad thing, i'm sure we can all agree. While losing to a rude person can be infuriating, do bear in mind that anyone who has to pretend to be a badass to random strangers on an online card game is surely not worthy of your time, emotions or thoughts. Just say 'gg' and move on.

On the subject of supposedly worthless abbreviated greetings and farewells, what exactly is wrong with wishing your opponent good luck? Are you seriously suggesting that you'd rather win because you're a lucksack and the shuffler screws your opponent? I know that I would rather play tight against a skilled opponent and come out on top, than have them lose because of hideously unlucky draws. Even though luck is how I win a significant percentage of my games ;)
