We started with Intrigue/Base...I think got prosperity next...loved Colonies/platinums and always use them. I think my most enjoyable sets after that are dark ages and hinterlands....

Thanks for all the welcome! I don't think I've ever played a two-player game! I've found four playered game very enjoyable, and 5-6 can be a bit 'busy' and long between turns, while 3 seems a bit quiet somehow.....I found thief quite fun and hadn't realised it would be so much worse in 2 playered game but makes perfect sense......

Welcome. You are playing Dominion wrong.

Actually, I think you will find that even with the standard rules, as you get better and players become more aware of how piling out affects the game, 3 and 4 player games will take longer. When I play 3 or 4 player games, it's common to have at least one game in the evening last at least 45 minutes.

Also, remember that a great thing about Dominion is that because the game is over fairly quickly, someone who gets bad luck (or for whatever reason falls way behind) doesn't have to suffer through 30 more minutes of not having a chance to win at all. The game ends, you shuffle up, and play again!

We've found that most games take 45 minutes plus as we're generally chatting and drinking tea or wine with nibblies as we go, and sometimes with kids underfoot.

Some games we deal out 10 blue-backed cards to each player and choose two cards each, then come to some consensus for the last two to do some last-minute balancing.

Cas

By the way, this is a neat way to pick kingdoms for IRL play.

thanks for that - I was intrigued that when I used randomiser certain cards seemed to come up more than others. Doing this way also yields some interesting combos (lots of attack cards!).

My wife and I have been playing Dominion for about two years - we generally play with another couple for a four-handed game. I am amazed that someone came up with this great deck-building concept and got it right. We tried Ascension sometime afterwards and didn't like it nearly as much (and stopped playing after a few games). Before this, Cosmic Encounter had our attention as the longest board game we'd been interested in, though Settlers of Catan and Carcassonne have been enjoyable.

We have all dominion expansions and generally prefer longer games, so as a result have a few house rules - we don't count duchies or other victory cards (except province and colony) as supply cards WRT three empty stacks game-end condition. We've left all provinces in, so there are however many have been in all sets (20? 24?). We have played with shelter cards as three starting cards since getting dark ages. We've generally used zack hiwiller's dominion card picker for initial set up, but it hasn't been updated to include guilds  :( Some games we deal out 10 blue-backed cards to each player and choose two cards each, then come to some consensus for the last two to do some last-minute balancing.

One thing I recommend is making the background colour of the box not like one of the ones already released. We still use the original boxes and it does mean I occasionally grab prosperity instead of hinterlands or base box instead of intrigue.....

So...errr....Donald X. this'd be my request - more Alchemy-compatible (heck, call it Dark Arts and fling in cards for being nefarious against each other :D) and interactive...but in truth am pretty happy...just feel a bit sad as our Alchemy cards are a bit negected.
Alchemy is the least popular set, so it just doesn't make any sense to make more of it. It wouldn't be doing that instead of not doing it; it would be doing that instead of doing something else. Something else would be better.

Awww.....no I can see the reasoning.

Been thinking about this overnight. One other card type I'd like to see one more of is something else that sifts through the Trash. I like games that incorporate the Trash into gameplay and when setting up a randomised game, if it looks like trashing will be a key part of the game then I might substitute in a Rogue or Graverobber to liven things up, but another card that incorporates trash sifting with something else would give more options.

Surely Hoard? Always gun for it. Each time you buy a VP you get a Gold. Deck keeps filling with gold alongside VPs and hence you can by VPs earlier and not worry about deck diluting too badly (?)
Cas
Sure, hoard is okay, but gold and a green card is three money in two cards, so 1.5 money per card. 1.5 money times 5 cards is just 7.5 money for a five card hand, not even enough to afford a province, so buying early green just to trigger your hoard isn't really getting your deck towards a desirable state.

Edit: The best use for hoard, other than alt vp, is keeping your deck from falling of a cliff once you've started greening. It's generally not very good to use hoard as a way of greening earlier, because the early green can stop you from reaching provinces pretty easily.

Yeah/agree/should have specified when I said 'earlier' I didn't mean 'right from the get-go'  :)

Looking at Donald's secret histories...yeah I wish Bank had been in Alchemy. I find it a bit overpowered even at a cost of 7, folks gun for it. 4 + P would have been better - slightly less accessible.

Hoard is one card we make a b-line for. I wonder if 6 is still too cheap for it.

Some of those possible cards at the bottom of the secret history of dark ages sound fun too....

Why do you want good cards? I'd rather have rats, a relatively weak but very fun card than cultist, a very good but un-fun card.

I guess I was not clear. What I defined as "good" cards are really non-terrible cards.

Rats is included in there. The only cards I excluded and considered not "good" are :

Chancellor
Woodcutter
Bureaucrat
Mine

Coppersmith
Pearl Driver
Herbalist
Cache
Poor House
Death Cart

Feast
Secret Chamber
Pirate Ship
Talisman
Contraband
Counting House

Harvest
Duchess
Adventurer
Thief

Scout
Saboteur

Transmute

aww, love herbalist, counting house, thief and adventurer here....

We got all the sets. I must admit I wasn't as fond of Seaside as the other big expansions, but still has some great cards. I think it is great that many cards vary so much in usefulness depending on hat the other 9 supply cards are.

Hi all - just found this thread. Can't find interview  :P but just thought I'd add my view.

First of all congrats to Donald X. for such a cool game - my wife and I have been playing it with 2-3 other people for 18 months now. We bought all the sets pretty early on and are pretty satisfied with the cards.

What I really like is that most cards go happily with most other cards (unlike, say, munchkin where throwing too many sets together can make for lots of cards unable to interact with each other). The only exception really is Alchemy. Love the idea, just feel there are not enough cards needing potions to buy them over repeated gameplay, so my one wish would be some extra Alchemy cards to give that set a bit of oomph.

I found Dark Ages and Hinterlands offered some really entertaining cards to play with and have my vote as most fun expansions FWIW....also does someone have a link to the interview?
cheers

I think this is only true for Transmute and Philosopher's Stone, maybe a bit for Golem because 4P is quite steep.
All of the other cards are definitely good enough that you'd get a Potion just for them. Alchemist is also sometimes skippable, but I don't have many issues with it if it's the only Potion card.

What I mean is: Scrying Pool, Apothecary, University, Familiar, Possession, Alchemist and Vineyards will see about the same amount of play whether there are any other Potion costing cards or not. They are not really influenced by it, rather they're influenced by other factors in the kingdom.

Alchemy has this semi-official rule to include at least 3 Potion-costers if you're playing with a Potion-coster: I think if you've randomly selected Transmute, Philosopher's Stone or Golem, you should include at least one other Potion-coster to make the kingdom more fun.

Oops, what I meant was we've played lots of games, and always have a minimum of 3 Alchemy cards if we're using Alchemy - hence doing this one goes through (and gets familiar with) various combinations of Alchemy cards fairly quickly, so if there is one segment of the game that would benefit from some boosting then this would be my vote for it - another small (guilds/cornucopia/alchemy-sized) box with a bunch of cards that either need be bought or otherwise interact with potions.

I must admit as time's gone on I enjoy cards that interact with other players more. Initially we felt reluctant using attack cards on each other (being a bunch of quiet 40-somethings) while my teenaged son would fling attack cards around with reckless abandon, but as time's gone on I enjoy them more and would like to see more cards like this (action/reaction, or Advisor/Contraband/Masquerade type cards).

So...errr....Donald X. this'd be my request - more Alchemy-compatible (heck, call it Dark Arts and fling in cards for being nefarious against each other :D) and interactive...but in truth am pretty happy...just feel a bit sad as our Alchemy cards are a bit negected.
cheers

The "interview" is an ongoing thing. Post your questions and he'll answer.

Cool,  thanks for that!

PS: Thanks all folks - found secret histories and interview now  :)
