Game Reports / Re: What did I do wrong here?
« on: August 03, 2011, 05:42:53 pm »
Passing up Jester for Caravan turn four was the biggest problem.  4-0 in curses is pretty tough to deal with.  I probably would've opened with Caravan rather than Cutpurse to save actions for Jester or Merchant Ship since Loan is going to clear out coppers anyway.  Menagerie is better than Peddler and probably better than Caravan towards the end.

Huh.  My reaction was that these are all kind of weak.

- I think you're underestimating how bad missing the reshuffle is, especially for card drawers are speeding up your shuffling.  For drawing your whole deck every turn Caravan is only half a Laboratory.  Open Huckster over Silver and 42% of the time both Huckster will miss the 2nd reshuffle and you're shuffling in a card worth $2 less than it would've been.  That's pretty devastating.

- +1 Action is something you really want this turn to match supply and demand for actions together.  A deck full of caravans can always play all its actions.  Not so much for a deck full of Sailboats.

- The imbalanced turn thing is mitigated if you're buying multiples.  If you're deferring benefits and then next turn drawing more cards that just defer again the turns are being smoothed back out.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Masquerade countered effectively

Nobody wants Masq / Potion?

I switched from mostly proposing games with the highest ranked player available to mostly auto-matching awhile ago and my ranking actually went up a bunch after that.  I don't know if that's just a coincidence or I got better or the TrueSkill calibration isn't quite right or if I just have a particular talent for noob bashing...

Masq/Masq plays actions both turns 3 and 4 exactly as often as Masq/Hag.  If you have a Masq turn 3, it's equally as likely that the other is card 11/12 in your first reshuffle and the +2 cards accelerates you into it turn 4 as it is that it was card 6/7 and you skip over it.  And M/M is getting better buys on average.

Huh, I missed that SH gets more actions because of the case where Hag hits a Masq.  That reduces the buying power advantage a bit too when it hits copper.  Come to think of it without any villages SH will actually play more actions because of that and because SH never misses the reshuffle.

You're going to get crushed by Masq/Masq though no?  Every time you play SH you give them a useless card, while every time they play their extra Masq they remove a useless card and maybe gain buying power and accelerate towards their next reshuffle.  That should be a fight they win.

Same, except I'd be buying Council Room planning on Alchemists.

Dominion Isotropic / Re: Decline of civility on isotropic?

I'm indifferent to the pleasantries.  I'll respond to a greeting and usually say gg at the end, whatever.
I don't think there's anything wrong if somebody wants to play for the most points.  If they're trying to waste your time it's a pretty terrible method considering it only works if you've got some strange aversion to the concede button.  If anything I've felt vaguely bad sometimes when I've done the reverse and wasted someone's time by not scooping and letting them move on with their life when I'm in a clearly hopeless position.

Rules Questions / Re: Who goes first?
« on: June 17, 2011, 01:11:20 pm »
I'd like to see it switched to just a random player goes first.  It discourages re-matches since the winner knows they're definitely going second vs a... dunno 1/4 to 1/3 chance of going first if they play somebody else.  And other weird matching effects.
