Dominion General Discussion / Re: What is your favorite Promo card?
« on: July 01, 2014, 04:34:53 am »
I vote Black Market. It is interesting and colourful in casual games with friends where one doesn't mind losing so much. But in competitive play it is much less interesting.

Governor is a very good card for me but I think it's OP since gaining a gold/remodel is self-synergy.

Turn 11 was a silly turn that I Throne Room a King's Court to play two Ruined Markets three times each, for a total of six times gaining 6 +buys. I didn't realize first why did I do that. But I spent all +buy on free Pawn with Quarry in play. Nice :)

4 cards that I cannot play well though my opponent sometimes can
- Procession...I don't enjoy trashing my precious action I've played twice. In the presence of ruins, I still can't make use of trashing ruins while my opponent may play it wonderfully.
- Governor...I always fall behind in Governor race, and gained silver a lot clogged my engine.
- Mercenary...When I'm hit with my opponent's Mercenary, I usually discard down to Mercenary, Junk, Junk so that I think attacking my opponent back can be harmful to him. But later on my turn when I play Mercenary, trashing two junks and draw two cards, I draw two actions that cannot be played and have only 2 to spend!!!
- Possession...It seems like a clever opponent has an x-ray eyesight that I'm always possessed on good hands and my turn I always hold horrible hands.

Another disliked card but I know how to use it
- Rebuild...In province game with experienced player it seems like nothing can beat turbo rebuild strategy. I planned to build an engine but he keeps on rebuilding, trashing province for province and I was left with no VPs to gain from my fine-tuned engine. So, I have to use this every time and I think nothing can beat this, even curser is often weaker than this.

Lesson to learn: My opponent's Margrave is the card that helps me win...

There was 3 provinces left, my opponent snatched 3 while I got 2 though I had bought so many KCs (6). I got a suck draw with 3 KCs but no other action...

Prom Vrt: turn 14
...
Prom Vrt   draws Silver, King's Court, King's Court, Gold, King's Court [Just a duchy with 3KCs...NO!!!!!!]

However, due to my opponent just KC-Margrave...

Prom Vrt: turn 15
...
Prom Vrt   buys Province
Prom Vrt   gains Province
Prom Vrt   buys Province
Prom Vrt   gains Province
Prom Vrt   buys Province
Prom Vrt   gains Province

It was such nice thing that I ended up winning.

Dominion General Discussion / The strength of Herald engine
« on: May 31, 2014, 04:56:44 am »
I think according to the previous game, Herald tends to be extremely powerful on board without villages but some good engine terminals.
At first sight I think this card is UP, just a cantrip doing nothing if it does not reveal action. So when I did not see village I play big money and lose to Herald. Herald reveals another Herald is like a level-2 City. So, it looks very OP in such that kingdom.

Is Herald strategy always a dominant strategy on board without villages over big money? (Neglect rushes) If not, any examples of strategies beating Herald engine on kingdom with no villages?

Cantrip decks (Market-Conspirator-GM) chokes easily.
Game with sifters/discard attacks is more resilent to greening. IMO

Best moment today: My opponent resigned after discarding 8 junks with cellar and got a splendid draw full of spoils, silvers and good actions.

Why did he resign after he got a good hand? I don't understand.

It's me who played Cellar, I mistyped, sorry.

In fact I wish my only Cellar with Wishing Well 2 times (success on the second one). It's my only hope when I drew almost all junks with card draw...

Moat is a fairly bad card overall but occasionally it is a must-buy. In this case with no trashing it is a must or you'll lose a curse split and that's the trouble. The presence of good trashing for curse, card drawing for discard attacks, etc reduces the importance of Moat IMO.

4 player game. Everything set up, I'm looking over the board. Mountebank at $5, Goons at $6, no real drawing or trashing but Moat is around making things interesting. I'm in 4th seat, and draw 2/5. Fine, works for me. Everyone else opens Smugglers and something else (I think two Smugglers/Silvers and a Smugglers/Mining Village, maybe?) - most of them aren't that experienced so whatever. I grab Moat/Mountebank, whatever.

Turn 3 and the player on my left Smuggles my Mountebank. Well crap, he's also the next best player in the game. Then the next player Smuggles the Mountebank as well. Then the 4th player Smuggles it as well. I'm pretty much thinking I've lost at this point, but oh well. I do something/ Turn 4 and I don't draw the Mountebank but do draw the Moat. I don't play it.

Turn 5 rolls around, and before I even get my 5th go, I've been hit by 3 Mountebanks. Hit by 3 Mountebanks, before I could even play the Mountebank I opened with. It sucked so bad.

You shouldn't have bought the Moat, Tables. You should've opened Mountebank/nothing.

On a Mountebank/nothing opening, your Mountebank has a 1/11 chance of missing the reshuffle. On Mountebank/Moat, it's 1/6.

Eevee is right. You do make your own shuffle luck.

Bear in mind it's a 4 player game and I'm in last seat. I don't think skipping Moat is worth it considering that, but I dunno.
If I were you I don't skip Moat. That is just your bad luck I think. In normal situation Moat should be able to block a single or two Mountebanks, that's 2-4 junk less

Colony is ignorable in favor of coppers deck with Beggar, Garden, Counting House, Cache and Masterpiece. Coppers and Silvers were all gone.
I underestimate the power of this combo for platinum and I lose. Though in fact I think this kingdom is selectively chosen for this combo.

Prom Vrt   plays Trading Post
Prom Vrt   trashes Province, Province
Prom Vrt   gains Silver
Prom Vrt   plays 2 Gold, 1 Silver
Prom Vrt   buys Province
Prom Vrt   gains Province
Prom Vrt   draws Silver, Province, Province, Ironmonger, Ironmonger

Nice ending by trashing two Provinces with Trading Post for Silver. It's another thing I am not going to do at all without VP counter!!!!!!

Another game which I was all behind in VPs but the end. I was at a huge disadvantageous position because my opponent reached 8 much sooner than me and purchased 2 goons with stonemason along with many hamlets and stables. A single colony turned the game to my victory at the last turn with the only platinum.

Any suggestion for me is greatly pleased. I think I played this game badly and there should be a better solution...

Turn 3, my pirate ship hit both initial two buys of my opponent! I didn't get a token but he thought it was his bad luck :(

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Favorite Alt-VP card
« on: March 20, 2014, 09:57:52 am »
No Great Hall?

More to the point, no island or tunnel? they're both stronger than great hall, tunnel is awesome!

Probably Colony, though it's not on the list. Usually trumps any other alt-vp except possibly Goons and rewards long-term strategy and engine building.

I agree, Colony is nice and game-changing too.

The OP specified scaling VP cards. No matter how many Island, Great Hall, Harem, Tunnel, Estate, Duchy, Province, or Colony Cards you pick up they are all worth exactly 4, 3, 2, 2, 1, 3, 6, 10 VP apiece respectively.
Island and Great Hall do not worth 4 and 3 VP, they worth 2 and 1 VP respectively.

Goko Dominion Online / Goko bot strategy?
« on: March 11, 2014, 12:54:04 am »
So far the AIs in Goko Dominion tend to have different strategy.

Serf bot
Villager bot
Banker bot
Defender bot
Conquerer bot
Lord Bottington
Warlord bot

I can guess from the name, Banker bot is likely to employ big money and villager bot employs villages. Anyway I don't know the actual bot strategy programming. Anyone here knows this please provide me with the answer. Thanks

Dominion Articles / Re: Combo: Masterpiece/Feodum
« on: March 02, 2014, 11:49:04 am »
I've tried this once. The board had all Trader, Feodum and Masterpiece.

I overpayed Masterpiece for around 8 coins, gaining 8 silvers. My opponent seemed not to realize this combo and just only went for standard Trader/Feodum. That's perhaps the only time I played Masterpiece for many silvers. (I almost always ignore this card because the silvers gained clog up the engine.)

On that board Masterpiece was the bane card and I was very lucky revealed it to Young Witch twice among flood of silvers haha!!!

Dominion General Discussion / Discussion: Get a second curser
« on: March 02, 2014, 11:38:43 am »
Besides junkers that are effective with many copies (Familiar, Cultist and sometimes Mountebank)

Is it usually an effective strategy to buy more than one copy of Witch or Marauder?

Good Point:
- Attack more often, usually means more junks to the opponent(s) and less to me.

Bad Point:
- High opportunity cost instead of buying something else useful.
- After curses (ruins) run out, my hand has more card that outlives the usefulness. (especially Sea Hag)
- If two copies collide, one curser will be dead.

On some games I see my opponent buys more than one curser and curses tend to split 7-3 or 6-4 to me but only in some games that I lose.

Any discussion? Is it good to get 2nd copy of curser? Compare them on board 1) no or very weak trashing 2) moderate trashing/TFB available 3)strong trashing

Lacking +buy on a vineyard board isn't quite as important as lacking vineyard on a vineyard board.  :P

It's hilariously true haha. In fact his vineyard would worth 9VP each!!!

I mean that if there were +buy card(s) then I'd build a university engine with plenty of peddlers..., not treasure-based (BM hybrid) like I played.

Dominion General Discussion / IGG VS Engine Components
« on: February 16, 2014, 01:04:44 am »
Suppose there's no other curser around, when do you usually spend $5 on IGG instead of engine components.

Buying IGG attacks the opponents with curses on-gain buy also denies an opportunity for another $5(or more) engine components since when on-hand IGG is a very bad card unsuitable for its cost.

Just some discussion here, sometimes I can't balance my purchase and focus on too many IGGs.

Dominion General Discussion / Counter to pirate ship?
« on: February 09, 2014, 12:20:42 am »
On board without non-terminal source of coin (market, treasury, etc) or terminal coin + village
without lighthouse/moat/secret chamber...

How to counter pirate ship with the absence of above? Big money seems very weak since it'll only boost the opponent's pirate ship coin token.
Or the best chance is to mirror???
