Title: Unlimited buys
Post by: mail-mi on November 29, 2013, 12:17:23 pm
What would you cost a card that said:

You may buy any number of cards this turn.

I know it's broken with gardens. Just wondering

What about, "You may buy any number of cards costing more than $0 this turn"?

Buying any number of cards let you deplete 2 piles in a turn, which is too much end-game control. Even more, buying all Coppers can be pretty good for any slog, which is not that rare. I think you need to limit how many $0 costers can be bought, or at least limit the number of copies of the same card that can be bought. Otherwise, it is inviting all kinds of broken combos.

Goons say Hi.

Needs a restricton of sorts.

And bridge too.

I play KC-KC-Bridge-Bridge-Bridge and ten Goons.  I get 83765483 points by buying everything.

So the card is OP because if you played KC/KC/Bridge/Bridge/Bridge you'd be able to win?

How can you get 83765483 points when you have ten Goons in play? Wouldn't that be 837654830 points or something?

Well, you have provinces, duchies, and estates too.

Wait, you can't play victory cards to give you that much VP?

What about, "You may buy any number of cards costing more than $0 this turn"?

Pretty much this, or some variant wording thereof. As long as you can't just smash through $0 cards, the effect would probably be fine. After all, +2 buys isn't usually that much better than +1 buy until it gets to the endgame.

The card would probably be balanced at around $3 or $4. I don't think it'd be all that exciting in games either. Lots of the time, it'd be dead.

I think this would be reasonable (though very situational) at $2 or $3; it's rarely better than Squire. (Edit: Ninjaed.)

For mail-mi's original card, I would try it at $6 or $7, and ban Gardens, Goons, Bridge and Highway. That price should prevent it from being an automatic buy in most games - you could usually buy a Gold or even a Province instead, which help you to win the game, not just give the option to end it one shuffle later. It does completely mess up the endgame, but I think that could be interesting. When there's no cursers or looters, the card effectively allows you to:

(i) end the game on 2 empty piles (by buying all Coppers), or
(ii) end the game on 1 empty pile when leading by >10 VP (by buying all Coppers and Curses)

This would shorten the game notably, but should not allow the Duchy Rush to be a viable strategy in most games. However, with cursers or looters (for an extra $0 pile) in the game, it might be too dominant.
