Title: Cards you always remember wrong
Post by: Voltaire on September 14, 2013, 02:19:31 am
What card do you always mis-remember, no matter how many games you've played?

For me, it's Embargo. I always think it gives +1 Buy.

I can never remember what gives what when trashing with Transmute.

Sometimes I forget that Graverobber can gain from the trash. It's there in the name: grave robber. But in my mind it's just "You may trash a $5 Action card from your hand, if you do, gain a Province."

For some reason I always mix up Apothecary and Scrying Pool. There have been games where I start trashing my Coppers and buy a Potion to get a sweet Scrying Pool engine going, only to realize what I thought was Scrying Pool was Apothecary.

I tend to forget that Squire gives +$1, since I'm usually just thinking of the options you choose.

I also forget sometimes that Urchin discards all the way down to four cards.  I usually think of the discard attack as quite minor, but in fact it is nearly as good as Militia when used as a finisher after a bunch of Council Rooms, Soothsayers, or Governors.

There's some cards that I use rarely enough that I can't remember all of the clauses on. Graverobber and Rogue being two. I get the Knights mixed up (like a lot of people, I think).

I was about to say "nothing" but I forgot about the Knights...  I need to go memorize them right now...

EDIT: Never mind, I just quizzed myself on them and got them all right...   ::)

So, the answer really is nothing!

Develop, remodel, remake, upgrade.  I know what they all do, but when I see them in writing I have to think to myself which one does which...

I don't know any of the knights...

Rogue because I never use it, and I actually always forget the trashing part on graverobber

I often forget that Graverobber top-decks the gained card.  Sometimes I try to take opponents' treasures with Pirate Ship.

I'm not sure if this counts, but Treasuries might as well be Peddlers and Alchemists Laboratories when I'm playing IRL, even though I buy them under the assumption that I will be top-decking them.

Mostly because I haven't played with it enough, I forget that Doctor is terminal. I tend to think of it as being more like Lookout.

Oh, and I can sometimes forget the on-trash benefits of things like Catacombs and Hunting Grounds.

Can we name some that aren't from the two most recent sets?

I forget that library puts action cards in limbo, not actually straight into the discard.

I used to confuse the gain restrictions on Smugglers and Haggler with one another.  Specifically that Smugglers cannot gain over $6 or Potion costs, and Haggler cannot gain Victory.

This isn't quite the same, but sometimes I think that Provinces cost $6 if I'm not being careful, just because of that big old 6 on the front. Especially at >$24 and I'm expecting to quad-Province (not that it happens very often).

24 is a slippery number...A little too divisible if you ask me

I always forget about the Potion clause on Apprentice.

I'm not sure if I could tell you with 100% confidence when the "Gain a Silver" on Jack of all Trades happens.

And sometimes I think that it gives 8VP (when I'm playing without the VP counter (which is why I usually play with it)). This is a problem especially in Colony games.

I'm pretty sure it has happened in my group.  If you play a bunch of cantrips or are doing double tac, it happens.  You get so used to just sweeping up all the cards you have in play.

I don't remember what exactly Doctor and Stonemason do, but i also don't own Guilds (not available in Germany).
Also i can't remember which Knight has which effect, except Sir Michael does the discard attack and the one for 4$ gives two buys. And that the Knights randomizer costs 5$.

The Knights Randomizer
$5: Action–Attack–Knight
Each other player reveals the top 2 cards of his deck, trashes one of them costing from $3 to $6, and discards the rest. If a Knight is trashed by this, trash this card.
Randomly choose one: +2 Cards; +2 Actions; +1 Card and +1 Action; +$2; +2 Buys; trash up to two cards from your hand; gain a card costing up to $3; each other player discards down to three cards in hand.
When you trash this, you have a 10% chance of gaining a Gold.
Worth 1/5 VP

Don't know names and effects of 3 male knights (I know the 5 female and Sir Martin+Vander) + many of the guilds cards + the full effect of Graverobber.

But I never played DA nor Guilds. All I play IRL with are Base, Intrigue and Prosperity

I realised too late today that I misremembered Doctor as discarding the cards that aren't trashed. It made my experimental Doctor+Tunnel opening (which would probably have been a bit dubious even with Doctor working as I thought it did) spectacularly ineffective.

Mine or Mint?

Also, on Iso I always confused Menagerie and Shanty Town. I think it was because the color scheme of the images were similar. I don't have this problem anymore.

But I am still sometimes surprised when all my Treasures are trashed after buying a Mint.

Holy cow, that would make Embassy the best card ever, or at least bring it to Wharf level.

I'm mostly know how all the cards work. There have been a few times where I was surprised that Rabble was discarding Action-Victory and Treasure-Victory cards. I also didn't count on it discarding Hovel and Necropolis.

I always forget Graverobber topdecks the gained cards. In fact, my IRL group didn't even realize this when we first got DA.

As for duration cards, I move them so that they are slightly higher than my other action cards, that way they don't get swept up like all the rest. Then I move them back down for the start of my next turn to know that they are giving me bonuses.

I think the Seaside manual actually recommends adopting a system like that, though maybe it recommends the reverse.

Me too, or rather, I forget that clicking the "End Actions" button means that I don't want to play any Actions this turn, not that I don't want to play the Action that I'm currently considering. I just played a game where I bought cards and my opponent didn't and I lost.

Axxle: 1
Axxle2: 3

It could happen if you disconnect after your first turn on Goko.
Or he just three-piled on Curses, Perl Divers, Duchess :-P

I just discovered that Alchemist/Herbalist/Scheme doesn't work the way you think it would, because Scheme resolves first.

Why? Scheme says "if" while herbalist says "when." I don't know of any rule saying that one take precedence over another.

Choose herbalist for scheme. Discard alchemists, topdecking them because you have a potion in play. Discard herbalist, triggering two effects, scheme's and herbalist's, choose to resolve whichever you want first. Topdeck potion or topdeck herbalist. topdeck the other. What's the problem?

Goko may not let you choose, like alchemist and Treasuries. However, I don't see why it matters. You'll still get the Alchemists, Potion and Herbalist on top of your deck.

Oh! I was misunderstanding Scheme. It made me choose a card for Scheme before anything else, and I thought the chosen card would go straight on my deck, meaning the Herbalist wouldn't be able to top-deck my Potion for me. Turns out you choose the card at the start of clean-up, but it isn't top-decked until you discard it.

Sometimes (irl) I tend to play two Ruins consecutively (none of which is Ruined Village). Probably because subconsciously I don't count them as actions. This happens to me most often when I play Ruined Library - draw a card, yay it's an action, play it... wait no.

Also I kepp forgetting that Duchess has a friendly Spy effect, but usually everyone else keeps forgetting that, too, so it doesn't really matter :P

Actually recently I've been thinking of Colony as 11 points, not 10. I'm always pleasantly surprised when the game ends and I've won by 4 points of something. Thanks opponents who aren't counting!
