Opponent had just Moneylender for support. I thought I would run away with it when I saw they didn't go for Fool's Gold, but did I do something wrong here?

I'm not sure his deck was particularly good but you only managed 2 provinces in 19 turns. Straight BM would do better than that. It seems you weren't very focused in your strategy. You were buying squires and workshops and plazas. Well squire and WS will help you get FG faster but they also take up a card slot. Storeroom is a really good compliment to FG because it gives you the +buy you really need but also sifts and helps line up more FG's.
And for reference, just FG/Big Money gets 4 provinces in like 14-15 turns on average.

There seems to be a common denominator with recent Fool's Gold games: Storeroom. It goes so well with Fool's Gold.
If your plan is Fool's Gold I would say Storeroom>>Squire(for buys)>Workshop for the opening action.
Edit: ninja'd by jonts!

And of course, I'm pretty sure that Polk does not imply that you should get Storeroom, Squire, and Workshop. Just get Storerooms.
Question: in a mirror, open 2x Storeroom or Storeroom/FG on 4/3?
-
Possibly storeroom/storeroom in first seat of a mirror match but not second seat. Workshop/fool's gold might be worth considering in second seat for deck development after the fool's gold are split, but the storeroom is still probably much better.

Correct.

Good question...
