Title: Alchemy with the other sets
Post by: TheMirrorMan on July 20, 2013, 09:03:49 pm
Two questions on combining Alchemy with other sets :

1) If you trash a squire, are you able to take a scrying pool ?
2) Can you use the band of misfits as an alchemy card ?

1) Yes
2) No (except Herbalist, since it doesn't have potion in its cost)

A bunch of people will post after this saying the same thing, but with a lengthy confusing explanation.

Anything with a potion its cost cannot cost less than Band of Misfits because potion is not directly comparable to coins.

Consider the following image:

You see, a relation on the collection of all costs (i.e., a subset of the cartesian product of this set with itself) is called a partial order if it is reflexive, transitive, and anti-symmetric...

Thank you. Very clear.

2) No (except Herbalist, since it doesn't have potion in its cost)
Also Apprentice.

Also Apprentice.
But Apprentice never costs less than Band of Misfits.

Possibly the first time anyone has said something Dominion-related on this board that doesn't have an edge case.

I actually thought twice before posting to make sure.

The outtake (http://dominionstrategy.com/2013/06/24/dominion-outtakes/) Flea Market could have caused that.

Victory Points are good if you want to win. Hah.

(Note: you forgot to write "on topic" so I can find an edge case to your saying there will be an edge case later maybe that will stop a not-edge-case to have an edge case)
(And yes, I did cleverly put "if you want to win" so you obsessive edge casers couldn't say "unless you want to lose")

Haha, not it couldn't!  To play a Band of Misfits, it's already gained, so it costs $4!

Unless you were just trying to find a time where Apprentice costs less, even if you could never use it...

Wait, what? Flea Market is 'cards no one has gained cost less'. So if you've gained Band of Misfits and no one has gained Apprentice, Band of Misfits costs $5 and Apprentice costs $4, so you could play Band of Misfits as Apprentice.
