Title: Most annoying situations in Dominion
Post by: soulnet on June 23, 2013, 02:24:19 pm
There are a couple of horrible situations that make you want to quit. What is the top-3?

I guess I would put full pins at first spot, but I've never been in either end of them. My current top 3 is:

- Constant Ghost Ship.
- Torturer chains.
- Scrying Pool chains.

Any additions?

The worst is when you're in an un-winnable position, but the game is still going to take a long time. The one's you're missing I think are:
 - losing Curse split 7-3 when both decks are under-developed
 - drowning from Ambassadors
 - vs a constant barely-full-drawing attack engine with little-to-no economy (so they have to spend full turns building up reliance to adding econ/vp cards and then building the economy before they kill you)

Opponent lucks into a T5 Province in a Tournament game.  Or you draw 2P on Turn 5 in a Familiar or Alchemist.

Play a Village, draw a Village, play a Village, draw a Village, play a Village, draw a Village, play a Village, draw a Village, play a Village, draw a Village, play a Village, draw a Village, play a Village, draw a Village, play a Village, draw a Village, play a Village, draw a Village, play a Village, draw a Village, have 3$, buy a Village.

HME mentioned it, I guess.
Same for Spys.

I've been on the giving side of full pins once, and it was amazing.  My opponent, however...  That would be first.

Another one I would say would be being Possessed three times a turn when you haven't even managed to get to $6P yet.

The only situation that really annoys me is when my opponent is winning the game and he or she could end the game now in their victory but chooses to win more instead, at the cost of my time. That, and when my opponent turns off the VP tracker.

The most annoying situation is when you are P2 and P1 wins the game on their extra turn.

The most annoying situation is when you are Player 2 and Player 1 wins and then you play another game with that same person and you are Player 2 again.

I doubt there is a single most annoying thing, but here are some I had:
1) Buy only Cellars and Tunnels; fail to connect them until turn 10.
2) Open Potion/Storeroom; finally buy Familiar on turn 6. (This opening gets a Familiar on T3/T4 about 8 games out of 9, and sometimes can get two...)
3) Open Silver/Silver; fail to hit $5 until turn 6.
4) Noble Brigand steals your Silver on turn 1. (This is actually a 1 in 3 chance...)
5) $5 on turn 1, but can't buy Dame Chapel because opponent already bought her.
6) Opponent opens Pirate Ship and hits your Silver and three Golds before trashing any Coppers for you.

It depends on the board, but I think in general, the most annoying thing is having all of your questions answered by "it depends on the board".

There was a poll awhile ago about most annoying bad luck situations, but I can't find it. Anyway, other than those, I'd say when I think an engine is non-viable, so I do some dull treasure strategy, while my opponent goes for an engine--and then it turns out that the engine is viable after all.

Worse: The engine was non-viable, too slow to get started, or too risky. Unfortunately for you, they got some lucky draws, and you some bad ones.

Asides from that, some annoying situations I've been in:
Opening silver/terminal, having at least the terminal fall to turn 5, while buying a terminal turns 3 or 4 and having that collide on turn 5.
Situations where the worst possible luck occurs within that situation. Naturally, the worse the luck, the more annoying. Such as, there's 4 cards on deck, I haven't seen either gold in my deck yet. I play Vault, needing a gold, and draw neither. Not quite worst possible luck but I had a game once where, using Lookout, I believe I managed to trash 6 coppers and two more valuable cards (I think a silver and a market maybe). I didn't trash a single estate (what I really needed) and at least one of the times I trashed a valuable card, I knew I had two estates on deck out of at most 6 cards (possibly 5)

Psh, I've had a game where I opened with Sea Hag and didn't have the ability to play it until like turn 13.

Edit: Not that yours isn't bad. But this pretty much dampened my ability to complain "I'm getting the WORST luck"

-Your opponent opens treasure maps with zero support, gets them to collide turn 5.

-You play a swindler, trashing an estate and replacing it with another estate. I played one game where both my opponent and I opened with swindlers. Between us, we trashed something like 5 estates and no coppers. On the bright side, the talismans he swindled my $4 cards into let me empty the 3rd pile the turn before his massive city stack went off, so there is that...

Possession where both decks are average (like, you couldn't trash your deck down to zero economy) and you happen to Possess all of their $2-$3 hands and they happen to Possess all your $8 hands.

One time I had such horrible luck on a familiar board, I lost the Curse split 10-0.  I still won (by rushing duchies and shanty towns).  I wouldn't say it's an un-winnable position.

It is against a decent player. Nearly every game I've won from such a position was against a bad player. Good players aren't going to make the massive and obvious mistakes often required to lose when that far ahead in Curses.

(this is assuming no strong trashing, of course)

On Goko, playing multiple Spies in a row can be annoying, and IRL with a lot of people 'C'mon Bill, show me the top card of your deck already...'. But the most annoying overall is Ghost Ship since it can slow the game down to a crawl.

Player 3er or 4er where one or two people make poor decisions and lock you out of a chance to win while having no chance themselves.  E.g.:

Bob goes B-crat/Gardens
Billy goes Possession
Brad goes Nv/Bridge
You go cry

Bob plays Envoy/Contraband/etc.
Billy makes an uniformed call on what to discard/band
You play something that beats the Envoy/Contraband/Etc. but only if you do intelligent things like prohibit gold early

Bob goes for big Governor draw without Militia
Billy has Militia
You go get another beer

Thankfully, Dominion does not have these setups often.

Eventually the torturere chains stop. Some people don't seem to realize that if the curses are gone, you can choose to gain a curse and gain nothing.

Eventually the torturere chains stop. Some people don't seem to realize that if the curses are gone, you can choose to gain a curse and gain nothing.

I'm pretty sure people realize that.  (In particular, I'm sure soulnet is aware of that.)  Torturer chains are annoying because it's a lot easier to build a Torturer/Village engine than a Witch/Village engine, so there tends to be more torturers per turn in games with heavy torturing than witches per turn in games with heavy witching.  I think the main complaint is that when playing online, the other player has to respond to every torturer that is played, even after curses are gone, whereas with witch, the curse is given automatically.  Since the Torturers are probably the main source of draw in the engine, they are going to get played a lot, so there's a lot of interruptions to the turn with not much happening.

I think having someone try to explain to me why one of the most annoying situations in Dominion is not annoying, because they think I do not understand the rules, is one of the most annoying situations in Dominion.

A lot of people, particularly less experienced players, are so adverse to gaining a Curse that they just discard their entire hand every turn.  And then the pin doesn't end.

IRL: cards like spy, thief, etc. that require everyone to reveal the top card of their deck. These always seem to get chained while someone is in the middle of shuffling. Or maybe it's because I'm a slow shuffler :-[

I remember playing a game where my opponent Torturer pinned me and I discarded my hand every turn for a few consecutive turns. This was an informed decision, though, because his Torturer chain collapsed and then I gave him the 9 remaining Curses with my own Torturer chain.

I think the main complaint is that when playing online, the other player has to respond to every torturer that is played, even after curses are gone, whereas with witch, the curse is given automatically.

There are times you will want to be tortured (Library, Menagerie discarding two Curses, Shanty Town with one bad action, Philosopher's Stone, protect against someone else's Minion, Pillage, or Bureaucrat).  Still, it would be useful in online games if you can choose to automatically decline the second discard once you have already declined the first.

A lot of people, particularly less experienced players, are so adverse to gaining a Curse that they just discard their entire hand every turn.  And then the pin doesn't end.

But this works well in multi-player.  I got tortured six times between turns in a 4P game, and by discarding my hand, I avoided gaining any curses while the other players took about eight.

Lookout as the only trasher, no enablers. Opponent consecutively uses it to trash all three Estates; you keep using it to draw three action cards vital to an engine -- trash, discard. Rebuild engine. Whiff again with Lookout.

Also annoying: Embargo (only curser) a pile you think your opponent will want; they take a totally different approach than expected and now YOU want the pile you've embargoed and have to eat the curses. It's like an April Fools prank you play on yourself.

Repeatedly being Pillaged.

Playing a Possession only to find out that the other player has two green cards, two curses and a copper. So instead of helping yourself, you just helped them to discard their crap hand. They go on to draw 2 Provinces with their next hand.

Opening 5/2 on a board with no $2's. Bonus hate for mediocre $5's, or Fishing Village.

Had I ever been on the receiving end of that, I think "opponent pulls the only curser out of the Black Market on turn 3" would easily make the "most annoying" list. We've got the Black Market promo card, but haven't tried it yet--worried about that kind of swinginess potentially making games less fun.

Early game shuffle luck.

1.)  Impact of 5/2 or 4/3
2.)  Position of opening buys after first reshuffle.
     a) T5CS aka Turn 5 Chapel Syndrome being the worst offender
     b) Trashing in general
     c)  Potion cost cards
     d)  $4/$4 after double silver or equivalent opening

I haven't gone through this whole thread, but man, these two are just so annoying.  I get frustrated when they happen against me and then I feel guilty when they are in my favor.

Getting a great engine going only to realize you forgot to include a +buy. Then way overspending to get the +buy.

Examples from recent games: spending $10 for a Herbalist; $14 for a Salvager.

Too bad there is no overpay card with +buy in Guilds.

Building a mostly identical Minion deck to your opponent, having 4 provinces to 0, then your opponent double-provinces in his turn AND his Outpost turn - and to top it off his Jester hit a Province of mine, causing me to lose by 1 point.
