Title: My disappointment with all of you.
Post by: synpax on May 29, 2013, 06:58:09 pm
You have the opportunity for some real cleverness, some real creativity in your choice of game titles. But what do I see?

John's Game
Joe's Game
5000+ All Cards
Bill's Game
4500+
Roger's Game

.....

Really?

Come on. I know ya'll can do better.

The problem is that the game string has limited length and you need it to convey information. So these are pretty much the only names possibles

You get at least 23 characters.
Title: Re: My disappointment with all of you.
Post by: Tables on May 29, 2013, 07:26:36 pm
23 characters isn't much when you want to tell people two important things: A rating you're looking for, and the sets you own. If we agreed to, say, abreviate things a little it would help, but there's too many casual players. And once you've put that inportant info in, why try and add something witty in the 5 characters you might have left?

The problem with calling it "Free Cookies" is that it attracts hordes of Rats, and not every kingdom features an Apprentice.

If people had creative titles, I still would rather join the games with the boring titles, because a simple "5k+ all cards" is so much more attractive than something creative.

EDIT: 420th post! SWED

I hope you bring better counting skills to your games.

all,5k+ is 7 characters.

And if you're worried about casuals, they aren't going to respect your 5k+ anyway.

Besides, I don't think putting the + thing matters; I've still had too boot people. Further, telling people in advance what decks you have costs you a slight competitive advantage you get from hosting the game.

It was an estimate, and your one is poor - 5k pro or casual? all cards or all sets? At worst I go with "All sets 3.5k pro" which is... 17 characters, leaving 6 characters.

Well, to be fair, promos don't make a huge difference, and there's a little symbol to tell you pro or casual. But I agree with keeping it plain and simple; the kind of name that I would use is: HERON ALL SETS 5000+

But I don't host games, because I haven't bought the cards yet. Mainly because I'm afraid that goko will randomly make guilds more than alchemy and I'll need to pay $1 more  :P

I am confused as well. The best I could think of was that I could host a game with only base hoping a really high rating player would accept, and playing with only base would level the playing field, making my win rate higher than with all cards.

Are you always so obtuse?

The icon tells you whether the game is pro or casual. And just the word 'all' gets the point across. And the game title doesn't matter anyway. Just kick until you find someone you like.

Look, I get it. You're 'on the spectrum,' thus your appreciation for social engagement and anything other than pedantic details suffers. And just as you get 30 extra minutes on your exams, I formally excuse you from having to come up with a human game title.

Good lord. You may:
1) Have a set you are particularly adept at and only play that, preventing players who are not as familiar with that set from filtering your game out.
2) What heron said.
3) ETC.

Some people are more interested in having a game name where players can quickly read and understand what ruleset the host wants to use rather than having an "interesting" game name. How many people are going to see it? What do you think is an interesting name anyway, you haven't mentioned examples.

Huh, I've never tried that before. I can see how it would work, since the butter could be naturally sweet and work with the jelly, but it still sounds odd.

I've always liked spreading a slice of bread with butter then toasting it. It's like buttering toast after it's out of the toaster and hoping that the butter will melt before the toast cools down, but without the hoping. That slice of heaven will melt.

I actually prefer my toast with apple butter specifically.  Preferably homemade.

But in all cases, preserves >>> jelly/jam.  Give me something that spreads.

It changes depending on what I want.  Favorites are PB & J, cheese, garlic powder, garlic powder and cheese, and peanut butter and bananas.

I find it funny hearing people talk about having jelly on toast. To me, jelly is the wobbly dessert that most of you probably call jello. And to have that on toast would be weird. Also, I'm not a huge fan of either, but I do think peanut butter and jam (jelly) is a weird combination.

Vegemite for the win. :D

I forgot about peanut butter + banana! Peanut butter and banana is by far my favorite food combination, it's just too good.

Darn it now I'm hungry. Why did I have to choose a food sidetrack?

Nutella

How lucky I am to actually have both peanut butter, ginger & rhubarb preserve and toasts at home. Reading this thread has made me want a toast or two. I wonder if I should go out on the backyard and ask the people firing flame throwers to throw a bit of flame on my toasts? Because there are seriously guys in my yard firing flame throwers. :S

Toast also conflicts with:

I grew up with butter and jelly on toast, so I don't think anything strange about that. But, jam/jelly on plain toast is certainly neater. Butter and jelly get a little sloppy together.

I tried vegemite once. I did not like it. Maybe it would grow on me (it is a fungus, right?), but I won't go out of my way to try it again.

Well, this combo doesn't work with Upright Toaster, you need Toaster Oven on the board.

The awesome 90 degree turn in this thread reminds me of a Mitch Hedberg bit.

Quote
Peter Frampton is a musical legend, but I don't know his music. So, when you meet a legend and you don't know his body of work, you have to divert from that fact. "Hey, Peter Frampton! Do you like toast, too? Yes, as do I; it is warm and crispy. And the perfect place for jelly to lay. Now stay away from me, Frampton! I ain't got shit to say to you!"

Some friends from Norway recently turned me on to having jam, liver pate, and gjetost cheese on toast/crackers/whatever. They used lingonberry jam but I can't find that at my market so I substitute currant jelly.

Cinammon toast is also great stuff.

Also if you have a toaster oven and you do the butter first thing try using the broil setting sometime.

Also, Moat does allow your opponents to conceal their disappointment, though if their attack was Sea Hag, probably they will choose not to anyway.
