Title: Number of logs on Goko
Post by: DStu on March 19, 2013, 03:55:20 pm
I'm was curious, so I scripted a bit, here is a (probably updating) graph
(https://dl.dropbox.com/u/23087358/Dominion/goko_day.png)
Update 2014-01-07 Still work in progress, but the graph is getting to messy for me, so here's a monthly average
(https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/23087358/Dominion/goko_month.png)

(full messy old graph is still updated and avaiable at https://dl.dropbox.com/u/23087358/Dominion/goko.png (https://dl.dropbox.com/u/23087358/Dominion/goko.png))

I'm guessing this is per day?  It doesn't surprise me that the number is rising - I've gotten bumped all the way out to Hovel at least once.

Would be interesting to see iso included, and a third line representing their sum!

wow where does the enormous increase from March 15 to 16 come from?  ;D

Mine would look like a flat line before Isotropic's demise.  :P

I was just about to post that!  Obviously the bump comes from the closing of the other implementations, but I'm wondering if they are retaining (some, few, most, all) of the isotropic users.

First, these numbers a published somewhere but I always forget the url of the archived leaderboards.  I could do it as with Innovation and fetch the logs and count, but unzipping >20k/day games takes a but more time than unzipping <2k/day.
Second, I'm not sure you can compare the numbers one to one.  I guess there are a lot more 1p games against bots on goko than on iso, so one isogame could be splitted in 2 gokogames.  On the other hand, goko is a bit slower, which would result in less games there in given time.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Including iso is mathematically sound, although a bit pointless going forward. Including the sum on that same graph doesn't make sense. It would be graphing two different units on the same y-axis: number of games and number of game per day. If we want to have a totally separate graph for total games played, that's fine, although I think a counter would suffice.

I think he was speaking of the sum of (# of games/day on iso) and (# of games/day on goko)

does the goko sum count only multiplayer games or is it solo games/adventures too?

Does it count games finished or games started? For instance, I tried to play 2 games today, but only actually completed one game before it froze during the 2nd turn of my 2nd game.

Oh, overlooked that post. Thanks first, and I'm pretty sure that there are also sologames and adventures in them.  I didn't download the logs because that would really take long, so I can't check.  I'm still not complete sure if the filename tells you something on the type of game though...

i was curious because the game totals don't really seem inline with some of the statistics of lobby activity i had been seeing in comparison with isotropic. of course, this assumes multiplayer though. it is very possible that goko generates a log for each level on the adventures. being able to cite a higher number of games being played has to make goko look better for the investors.

it might be worth our time to ask goko quick what the log file names mean. or, even better, offer them some input on how to name the files to make things easier for parsing through the logs. if goko logs are ever going to end up on council room (or similar) it would be really nice to have the game type (casual, pro, adventure), date and time, level of the players, and expansions being used somewhere in the log file or file name.

there are logs of all games, including tutorial, adventure and single player ones. I don't see why those shouldn't count as games played.
Btw, i find it surprising that the number of iso games has been decreasing before it shut down. I'd have expected many people to play a lot there as long as it was possible.

An initial increase followed by a gradual decline (and hopefully an eventual leveling off) is pretty much the exact trend for every internet game ever released. I wouldn't read too much into it (unless it doesnt level off at some point).

Only if there's a big marketing push to start (which for Goko, of course, there was). For a game like isotropic Dominion, people will gradually discover it over time, which offsets the people who discover it and get bored, at least for a while.

The flood of players from isotropic Dominion to isotropic Innovation is essentially a marketing push too, so a drop-off there wouldn't surprise me.

That is clearly the biggest ball drop by goko in my opinion.  I know this has been discussed ad nauseum in other places, but their lobby system is just such a failure.  One main lobby, only show open games, be able to see everyone online at once, automatch, etc...  You'd think they would have learned by now to do what the customer wants but clearly they are taking their jolly sweet time to do things by having the lobby be essentially everything that the customer doesn't want.

This has been said way too many times, but

Goko isn't that bad, but it's only tolerable with the extension, which isn't a great sign.
Base only games are okay, but they tire out really fast.
I'm not willing to spend money on all cards until matchmaking is implemented, which is absolutely the biggest issue.

I don't have any beef with the rating system, it seems like its accuracy is on point, and the only issue is that the variance is a bit higher than it should be.

Edit: I mean the Pro rating system. It feels like I gain too many points for playing Casual games. I was ranked ~6k, I played a casual game with someone ~2k, and I got almost 100 points for a win, which seems bogus. But people who are serious about ranking up in Dominion should only care about Pro anyway.

Well, there's the small problem that if I forced myself to engage with that interface for more than 20-30 minutes in a day, there's a high probability I would accidentally murder someone.

And then I'd be stuck in prison, with no way to play Dominion.

The main reason I didn't play Goko before wasn't that it was bad, I was boycotting them. And then I just had to start playing there in order to practice for the national champs. And then it was just useless to continue the boycott so now I sometimes play a game or two there.

Guilds got me on Goko finally. Since I don't have a group to play with IRL currently, Dark Ages is still fresh to me, so the draw of 2 fresh expansions is compelling. I goofed up though in buying all sets though instead of just Dark Ages and Guilds, so I don't randomize many of the new cards when making a pro game. (I wish Goko had a bias option like iso had.)

Take my advice, man. Play casual games and use the extension to randomize the kingdoms how you want. You'll be having so much fun that you won't care about your Pro ranking.

Yeah I came to this conclusion too. I don't care much about my pro ranking, but I figured I'd get stronger opponents on pro... but with unfamiliar cards that's maybe bad.

I believe this is overstated. If you host a game, you get to play whomever you want by stating that in the game title.

And I really haven't had any issue finding people to play that are in the range I really care to play. Just pay the measly cash or seek out games that have your score range in the title.

Besides, I think that the way the scores work, matchmaking wouldn't be so great anyway what with the points people lose for taking a couple days off or just hitting a bad streak.

Some of my worst beatdowns were from people 2000+ points under me that I played on a whim and underestimated.

I haven't had the motivation to play on Goko lately since most people (me included) don't have Guilds yet and playing non-Guilds Goko feels like a waste of time now that Guilds exists.
Guilds is $4 on Goko. Just buy it, it's well worth it.
I'll definitely buy it once I turn 18 next month, but for now it's not possible since I don't have access to any of Goko's accepted payment methods.

What country are you in where you can't get a gift card or use your debit card under 18? Does Goko really not accept these?
Finland.

If you want it now, you can paypal me and I'll set it up for you.

We could start a betting pool about where it will go when summer is over.

Just for clarification:  With "it" you mean the graph or the number of games on goko per day?

Why would the number of games going up not correspond to the graph going up?

Don't know. May depend on how much money I have bet on which number...

My HDD crashed, the code for this was not on github, and I've some other things to do (like thinking of some better backup system), so this will probably not update for a while...

I can't make an intelligent guess either way. Where do you think it would go?

Seems to be a vague upwards trend over the last month, which is good.

Awesome, it's back. We seem to be stabilizing with an average of about 40k/day over the course of the week.

So likely 6000-7500 regular players, of whom much less than half have paid for cards?  Ouch.

How are you determining how many have paid for cards? I have all the cards but haven't played pro in months. Just curious if I missed something. Either way though probably still not the user base they were hoping for.

Agreed. I don't think this estimate works. There are tons of products I've bought for $40+ that I don't use daily or anywhere close. Goko has seen about 100k distinct registered users and nearly 8M games in the past year. I'm sure they've taken in a lot more than 3k*$40=$120k of revenue.

Same here. I play Casual so that I can use the User Extension to randomize cool boards.

I thought it has been increasingly difficult to find games on Goko these days and the graph seems to suggest the same thing. Is Goko losing players, and if so, why's that?

My guesses are that the novelty of Dark Ages and Guilds has worn off. When Guilds came out, there was a brief reappearance of a lot of players that wanted to try out the new sets, where new means not on Iso.

Additionally, out of the players who might play Goko with the extension, a good portion of them have probably done so already. So that isn't driving the return of players as much as before either. Both of these are for semi-competitive players though, not sure why the general # of games overall is dropping.

Bought a new PC, the script is on the old HDD, and with all the logs the folder was very larger, and the numbers didn't change much, so I didn't bother to move it yet.
Anyway, here you go...

Could you increase the width of the games/day graph, or start a new one starting at december 13 (leaving the old one up?)

So January was its best month ever?

Just in case you're serious, I'll explain this. The graph simply averages the total number of games per day over all the days in the month. At the time of this writing, January has only had 6 1/2 days. The big spike caused by TotalBiscuit's review caused a large number of games to be played within that span. By the time January ends, its average number will likely be significantly reduced.

Really, January shouldn't show up on the graph until February starts.

Why not use a one-week moving average? Weekends give an expected periodic component to the data, so a window of one week (or n weeks) will avoid noise due to some months having more weekends. Moving average because it can give sensible data for today without having to wait for the month (or week) to end.

(It's hard to do statistics without appearing like (being?) a pedant.)

The plan was to replace the first graph by last 30 days. Not sure if i want to stop the monthly average earlier, it's probably an exception this month, and at least after 20 days the average already has some meaning

Honestly, I like seeing the daily numbers (the first graph) and don't look at the monthly numbers.

I am always serious! Thats why my friends keep calling me 'Seriously Ozle?' (although sometimes they follow that up with Shut Up, but Ive never met that guy)

I was looking at the top graph, thats not a month by month thing, it has too many data points.  and the early days in Jan are thier busiest ever, having a really high spike at the beginning of the month is a good thing, no matter the reasoning for it, especially for a company thats business plan is to get peoples money off them once and thats it.

I reckon, with absolutely no burden of proof whatsoever, that Jan will probably be one of thier biggest sales month after the launch.

I know I stopped because it seemed rather pointless and depressing to play on Iso once its death date got announced.

I did the same thing, especially that last week. Maybe I should've binged though!

I also retired a week early from Iso despite having 6,000 games played because I pulled off the unfathomable Quadruple Mega (http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201303/09/game-20130309-100829-c46300c6.html) (gained all Colonies, Provinces, Duchies, and Estates in one turn) and I just decided right there that that was how I wanted to go out!

I think  recent datas are wrong. About 50% of game create a log so the other can't be in those datas.

I didn't realize that. Let's hope that's what going on, but I have noticed fewer people in rooms when I play, too.
