Title: How to tell if you're on the right Innovation track?
Post by: philosophyguy on March 14, 2013, 07:07:43 pm
I've now played a handful of games of Innovation. I'm getting really confused because I don't have a sense for how to tell whether I'm moving in the right direction. In Dominion, a general rubric is: is my average buying power increasing?

For Innovation, I don't know whether as a beginner I should be paying attention to what age I'm drawing from, how many of some icon I have, whether my score is increasing, or something else. I know that eventually all of that stuff is relevant, but is there a Big Money equivalent benchmark for how to see the progress in this game?

Achieving 1-6.
Controlling as many of the lower level achievements as possible is very, very important.  It starts to matter less when you get to the higher ages and score pile attacks get stronger.

Whether you want to tech up to 8 and win by Empricism or want to get six achievements, you need the early achievements for either offensive or defensive purposes.

There isn't any one benchmark for how well you're doing. Here are a few questions you can ask yourself during play.  The more that're true, the better!

Do you have more cards in play than your opponent?
Are you at a higher tech level?
Did you claim the early achievements? (1/2/3)
Do you have a good score pile?
Do you have colors splayed?  More than your opponent?
Are you leading in at least half the icon types?

In descending order, I prefer to be leading in:

* Score / scoring ability
* Achievements
* Symbols / splay
* Tech (so long as the lower piles aren't emptied)
* Drawing ability (either something like Fermenting or Industrialization)

If you aren't leading in any of them, you are probably going to lose.  But generally you must be leading in something.
