Title: Any Go players?
Post by: J-Kidder on January 26, 2013, 02:10:09 pm
Anyone here play Go?  I just got into it a year or so ago and am not very good, but the game is fascinating!

I've played it a bit, I didn't like it but I'm almost certain that it was because I'm not good at it.  If I tried harder I'm sure I would like it.

I used to play it a lot, and I was taught it at my public library. I still have my old Go set. :)

I play it for 20+ years. Best conceivable 2P strategy game.

Bump. I play Go...

I love Go.  And I'm terrible at it.

I mean, I'm better than people that played twice with their friends in college or whatever, but old men that sit around playing with it have to give me a pretty substantial handicap.  Fortunately, Go is easy to handicap!

Does anyone play on KGS (http://www.gokgs.com)? If not, you all should.

I played a lot of Go for a couple years, although I'm pretty rusty now. I think it's like the best game ever.

Maybe we could play online if anyone's interested?

Just started learning. I'm awed by my sheer ineptitude.

The place to play online is here: http://www.gokgs.com (http://www.gokgs.com)

I've just been to the European Go Congress and am now off to Letnia Skoła Go. I brought Dominion cards with me...

How'd it go Warfreak? Do you have transcripts of the games?

I won! The British Go Association is hosting the game record (http://www.britgo.org/files/bchamp/2013/game_one_2013_bgarelay.sgf) as an SGF. The next game will be this Saturday at the same time.

I'm no expert at game play, but I was a bit of a Go nerd for awhile.  I think the sheer "meh" ness of Morgrim's post, from receiving such an honored game as a random Christmas present and then calling it "not so bad" as opposed to "the most amazing game every created" or "so difficult I hate it" seemed really funny.

When you think about Kawabata's novel or even Hikaru no go, the seriousness with which Go players and enthusiasts take themselves is apparent.  So Morgrim's shrug post was funny to me.

It's like getting a chess set as a present and saying "Meh, I guess it's kind of interesting."

I have played Go, but I'm not that good at it. It's interesting in it's simplicity, which I like. The more you get with the least rules is the ideal.

The self-seriousness does not translate to self-aggravation though. Most Go players have a humble opinion of their playing strength and are aware that they are far from hitting the ceiling. There is some condescending behaviour towards other games, namely Chess. But overall I have found the Go player an accomodating bunch, more than Chess players.

It'll be five years until the robots beat the best players of the world I guess. Then, they'll discover Dominion. Will they best the human race there too?

Depends on the kingdom.

I'm a boss at Go on a 3x3 board.

Which is pretty much Tic-Tac-Toe.
