I like making brackets, and I also like finding out more about other people's favourite games... Would there be any interest in doing something like this?
-
Sounds cool to me. I'm sure it would expose people to some games they hadn't considered or heard of as well.
-
Yes, yes indeed.
-
Mmm, yeah. Sounds interesting.
-
Alright, three isn't a lot but maybe more people will participate once it's going... if there aren't enough nominations to make this worthwhile, I'll kill it then.
I'm going to follow the format I used in the GCL Mafia Madness (http://rpggeek.com/geeklist/140794/gcl-mafia-madness-round-6) tournament last year.
Rules:
- Nominate your favourite 10 (or more) games, in order (absolute mostest favouritest at the top).
- I will work magic on this (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/listitem/2087451?commentid=2854650#comment2854650) - If you don't care about the details, the important takeaway is that you will be guaranteed at least your top X games (where X depends on the size of the bracket and number of participants - top 2-4, probably), and players nominating the same game will share the "cost" of that nomination (potentially allowing them to get extra games in further down their list). Seeding will be determined by the number of players nominating a game, and then by average placement.
- This isn't totally game-the-nominations proof, so please make your list independently of others' choices. Do post your list here rather than by PM - hopefully it will encourage more participation, and if not then at least we can turn the failed tournament thread into a discussion of your favourite games!
- Any expansions are included with the base game - for example, if Dominion were included in the tournament, you would be basing your vote on all the cards, or any subset cards you prefer to play with. Alternate names/editions will be combined, as will very similar games within the same family.
- Use whatever criteria you like in determining which games are your "favourite".
- Please post your list with just the names of the games, no bulletpoints, numbers, or inline commentary. It makes it a lot easier for me to copy/paste to my spreadsheet. Feel free to add commentary on the games at the end of your post.
-
My List:
Mafia
Race for the Galaxy
Brass
Agricola
Through the Ages
Diplomacy
Ghost Stories
Pandemic
7 Wonders
Time's Up
-
if mafia is your number 1 mith how come you haven't played on the forums here?
-
If I were playing at all, it would be on mafiascum. I don't have the free time to play like I would want to right now.
-
Castles of Burgundy
Alhambra
Carcassonne
Bohnanza
Empire Builder
7 Wonders
Pandemic
Cards Against Humanity
Castle Panic
Qwirkle
-
Power Grid
Carcassonne
Agricola
-
Gonna play Mansion of Madness first time tomorrow, than submit after that :)
-
Also, what counts?
I assume card and board games. Miniatures, TCGs too, I hope.
What about roleplaying games? Video games?
-
This is tough. I haven't played that many games in my life to judge, but it's still hard to pick a Top 10. You said I can nominate more, right?
Dominion
Mage Knight
Sid Meier's Civilization: The Board Game
Pandemic
The Speicherstadt
Sankt Petersburg
Panic Station
Through the Ages
Kamisado
Forbidden Island
The Resistance
Hanabi
Settlers of Catan
Um Reifenbreite
Shadows Over Camelot
These aren't probably not the best games, but the most fun for me in the couple of months.
-
Through the Ages
Galaxy Trucker
Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation
Battlestar Galactica
7 Wonders
Twilight Struggle
Resistance: Avalon
Pandemic
Power Grid
Dixit
Kahuna
-
I assume we shouldn't put in Dominion?
Twilight Struggle
Hanabi
Ra
Tigris & Euphrates
Bridge
Tichu
Race for the Galaxy
The Resistance
Category 5 / 6nimmt! (etc.)
Jaipur
Bohnanza
For Sale
-
Aand I've just actually reread what's going on and realised it's not what I thought it was, but is still cool. Given my nominations list was sincere, I don't think I need to adjust it.
I should stop browsing F:DS past midnight. I do stupid things.
-
Also, what counts?
I assume card and board games. Miniatures, TCGs too, I hope.
What about roleplaying games? Video games?
RPGs are fine; Video games, no.
-
The Spoils
Taboo
Charades
Race for the Galaxy
Ascension
Resistance
Kingdom Builder
Twilight Imperium
Power Grid
Mutant Chronicles - The Siege of the Citadel
I had to put Mutant Chronicles on the list since it was basically the board game that got me into gaming. It's not super good, and we have tried to balance it, but it's soooo much in favour of the Doom Troopers. Pretty cool setting, though. Much cooler than in the dissapointment that was the movie.
-
I've played way too many games just once in the past that I don't remember much about other than "I gave it a high rating on BGG". I'm just gonna pick ten that I've played and enjoyed recently enough that I rmember them. Some I've just played once, others a lot. There are probably other games I think are better, but I played them too long ago to remember.
Tzolk'in: The Mayan Calender
Stone Age
7 Wonders
Love Letter
Citadels
Hearts
Innovation
Resistance
Troyes
Amyitis
-
Go
Through the Ages
1830
Monad
Terra Mystica
Cyclades
Power Grid
Tigris & Euphrates
Bridge
Ursuppe
-
Okay, let's go, these are in no special order:
7 Wonders
Stone Age
Dixit
Telestrations (love me some party games with the family)
Puerto Rico
Small World
Settlers of Catan
The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game
Agricola
Battlestar Galactica
-
Also, what counts?
I assume card and board games. Miniatures, TCGs too, I hope.
What about roleplaying games? Video games?
RPGs are fine; Video games, no.
Tabletop only. K.
-
Ugh, putting them in favourite order is hard....it all depends on the group and the players.
Magic
Carcassonne
Ticket To Ride
Blood Bowl 3rd Edition (Not the new card game thing, ugh)
Stone Age
Settlers of Catan
-
7 Wonders
Settlers of Catan
My favorite RPG is Fiasco, but the idea of a Fiasco tournament is absurd. Most RPGs don't have winners, though some do ( http://www.agon-rpg.com/ http://www.bullypulpitgames.com/games/roach/ ).
-
"but the idea of a Fiasco tournament is absurd"
One of us is missing the point here I think, I thought this was a tournament to find the best game, you think its a vote to run a tournament OF that best game.
-
This: "I thought this was a tournament to find the best game"
Not This: "you think its a vote to run a tournament OF that best game."
(If it were the latter, it would be in the forum games section. :))

Oh! I had that confused too. I'll submit something later then.
-
Imperial (it's a stock investment game with tanks, this should be no contest)
Goa
7 Wonders
Steam
Navegador
For Sale
Stone Age
El Grande
Innovation
Cyclades
-
7 Wonders
Telestrations
Carcassone
Stratego
Mr. Jack

This may or may not be what I was thinking it was last night. I've (almost) played a tournament that worked a bit like that, where games are nominated and essentially you play a gauntlet of games between you. It's pretty fun, but you need certain restrictions on what games can be chosen and stuff.
-
hey, maybe we should run a tournament of whatever game wins? :D
-
Mao
Set
7 wonders
Tichu
Citadels
Pictionary
No Thanks!
Blokus
Sticheln
Bang!
This are all definitively based on different criteria, and current feelings (I get tired of games and start playing them less, while new games I can play for several hours several days in a row).
-
Agricola
Chess
Puerto Rico
Star Wars RPG (2002 Revised Core Rulebook)
Dungeons & Dragons
Ticket to Ride
Mafia
Texas Hold 'em
Gauntlet of Fools
Carcassonne
-
(Magic: The Gathering if allowed)
Agricola
RFTG
Puerto Rico
Dungeon Lords
Kingdom Builder
Ticket to ride: Asia team map
Stone Age
Tzolk'in: The Mayan Calender
Village
Blokus
-
Sticheln
I have played it several times, and still I couldn't pick up my cards and tell if I had a good or a bad hand. That was quite unique for a trick-taking game.
-
7 Wonders
Settlers of Catan (especially with Cities and Knights)
San Guo Sha (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanguosha) (which is kind of a a much-expanded rip off of Bang!)
Mao (because why not hahaha)
Spades
Hearts
Big Two (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Two)
-
Its surprising in such an usually edge-case oriented community that no-one nominated sex, any sport, any physical game (like dodge ball), any drinking game, any get-nude of a game, and such. It seems like everyone automatically agreed -or at least that consensus was quickly reached- that "game" means "something to be played mostly seating in a not-so-big room", or alternatively, something in which the abstracts of the game rules or guidelines can be rated regardless of social or material context (i.e., I would not play forum strip-poker neither online hide-and-seek, while for all the games that were named here and I know, an online version either exists or seems plausible enough).
Disclaimer: I'm not stating that implementability as a forum or online game is the basis to decide weither something is a game or not in this context, and such discussion probably deserves its own thread, if someone is interested.
-
I don't think Mao would work well online.
-
Nomintations still open... Was hoping for a bit more participation than this, but will get this going sometime later this week regardless.
(Currently the field is at 63 games - the next change would add two games, and I decided it would be more "fair" to the top seed to just give the bye rather than face the winner of a play-in - with everyone getting in at least their top 4, though that may change of course if we have additional nominations.)
-
Oh, and also: I am exhausting some of the smaller lists before hitting the "nomination point" threshold - feel free to add to your list or otherwise edit it (just post to let me know you have done so).
-

yes, that was me missing the point.
I've ordered my nominations in order of preference
Fiasco
7 Wonders
Settlers of Catan
-
One last call for new nominations... we haven't had any in four days, so I'm getting close to calling it closed and starting round 1.
-
Tales of the Arabian Nights
Terra Mystica
Niagara
Asteroyds
IŽdon't really have favourite games, but these are ones I like a lot.
-
It turns out I have to branch out a bit to reach reasonable numbers:
Small World
Ticket to Ride
Trans Europa
Boggle
Scrabble
Memoir 44
Innovation
-
Oh, and also: I am exhausting some of the smaller lists before hitting the "nomination point" threshold - feel free to add to your list or otherwise edit it (just post to let me know you have done so).
My list was small. What's the threshold?
-
Currently the system has exhausted the lists submitted by hsaile, flies, and Ozle. (It's unlikely anyone else will join that group if we receive new entries or if those three expand their lists, unless there are a lot of repeat nominations.)
-
I really like how the top of the bracket has formed in the current iteration. The 19 games which have received multiple nominations (this is more restrictive than being on multiple lists, as for most submissions only the top 4-7 games are in or at the cut line) includes the BGG top 4, the classic big three of gateway games (plus a couple newer games that arguably qualify), some new hotness, a couple of classic card games and party games... It's a really solid range of games.

What are the Big Three gateway games? My guesses would be among Settlers, Carcassonne, 7 Wonders and Ticket to Ride.
-
I was including 7 Wonders in the "newer games that arguably qualify". (Personally, it's my most successful gateway game. But it hasn't been around long enough for me to consider it a "classic".)

So were my other 3 guesses correct? :P

Yep.

Nominations closed. I'll get the first part of Round 1 going later this afternoon.

Taboo - 1 | 2.00 | Lekkit
Bohnanza - 1 | 3.25 | D Bo; theory
Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization - 3 | 1.98 | mith, Tables, ipofanes; Qvist
If I were naming this division, it would be Civilization Division, with Sid Meier's Civilization, Through the Ages, and Civ-Lite 7 Wonders as the overall #1 seed. The seeding system produced a quirky pair of matchups between Qvist and Lekkit's top two games. This division is pretty stacked, with four BGG top 10 games.

If I have played only one of the two contestants and I didn't find it absolutely horrible, I voted for it. I am quite sure I'd enjoy rather Mage Knight than Taboo but I can't be certain.
-
yeah, before I vote I like to have clarification too. Is there a ruling for the voting. Do we have to know both games in a matchup or at least one or can we vote even we don't know any of both games?
-
But I already can give some comments.
7 Wonders - Scrabble - Easy choice. I dislike Scrabble and 7 Wonders is fun.
Set - San Guo Sha - I never played Set and never even heard of the Chinese one. But it seems an interesting Bang! variant.
Mafia - Ra - I like playing Mafia playing on the forums, but in real-life the player elimination is just annoying. I played Ra only against an AI and it's an really interesting set collection game.
Star Wars RPG - Twilight Struggle - Never played any of these. I'm not a role-playing guy and I'm not that interested in Twilight Struggle either.
Puerto Rico - Steam - Puerto Rico is interesting, but not one of my all-time favs, just maybe because I haven't played it that much yet. Steam is definitely a game to try out, but I don't know it.
Sid Meier's Civilization: The Board Game - The Spoils - I nominated Sid Meier's Civilization, so I will probably vote for it. I know Spoils, but never played it. It seems like an interesting "fix" of M:tG though.
Mage Knight: The Board Game - Taboo - Hard to compare these two. I mean Mage Knight is one of my all time favs and I prefer it everytime over Taboo, but I mean it really depends on the player group which of those to play, right?
Bohnanza - Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization - I never played Bohnanza, shame on me, but I know it's fun game. But I'm currently really into TtA, it's a great civ game, Vlaada is a genius.
Real votes to come after I got clarification.

"Use whatever criteria you like" - If you feel you know enough about a game to make a decision without having played it (you hate the genre, it's up against one of your absolute favorites, you think the artwork is cheesy, whatever), go for it.

Comments on my votes:
Division 1
- 7 Wonders is easily my favorite gateway game. Scrabble, I hate with a burning fiery passion. (Not that I don't respect the game, and I'm not that bad at it I guess, but... bad associations.)
- I haven't played San Guo Sha, but I don't care much for Bang or similar games. I choose Set here more for the concept than actually wanting to play it currently. It's the sort of game I would have wanted to play when I was young.
- I like Ra and all (though I never get it to the table in person, mostly I've played the AI on my phone), but no surprise here.
- I like roleplaying ok, and I love Star Wars, but I don't think I would enjoy roleplaying in a Star Wars setting more than any other. Meanwhile, Twilight Struggle is a great game which I need to play more.
- Puerto Rico/Steam could have gone either way. I have them rated the same on BGG, and both are in the category of "Could be among my favorite games, if only I had the chance to play them more and confirm that". Puerto Rico gets the nod for no good reason.
- If I want to play a game like Magic, I'll probably just play Magic... The Spoils doesn't interest me. Civilization is quite good, though I've only played it once.
- I'm a Vlaada fan, and Mage Knight is excellent. I like Taboo, but it always seems to cause arguments when I play it.
- I don't tend to like trading/deal-making games, so I've never actively sought out a game of Bohnanza. Through the Ages is one of my favorites to play online.
-
(If your favorite game is in one of these matches - and especially if you were the only one to nominate it, and double-especially if I had never heard of it until putting this together - I would really appreciate hearing about what you see in it.)
-
Match 1
7 Wonders
Scrabble
Scrabble I don't mind, but it's not exactly exciting. It has a lot of bad things for a game (AP/Long waits between turns being the main one) but it's a family game, so that's nice. 7 Wonders is a great gateway game, lots of groups I've played it with have enjoyed it a lot. It has a little more luck than I generally appreciate, and I don't think it really needs all the expansions it's getting, but it's a finely balanced, fun game.
Match 2
Set
San Guo Sha
San Guo Sha leaves a slightly bad taste in my mouth due to slightly complicated reasons not directly related to the game itself, but it leaves my biased. The idea of the game itself fails to excite me, although I've never played it. Set is a fun little game, which ruins your brain, but is a nice filler for clever people (especially mathematicians).
Match 3
Mafia/Werewolf
Ra
Mafia/Werewolf is always fun, but has a lot of issues (player elimination, it can easily become offensive/aggressive etc.). Still it used to be my favourite game. Ra I haven't played but I've heard good things. I can't really make a judgement call here so I abstained.
Match 4
Star Wars RPG
Twilight Struggle
I'm not an RPG fan, and nobody has ever told me just how good the Star Wars RPG is (I do hear about various RPGs a reasonable amount). Twilight Struggle is amazing.
Match 5
Puerto Rico
Steam
Two games I've never played but want to.
Match 6
Sid Meier's Civilization: The Board Game
The Spoils
I want to try Civ at some point, but it looks pretty big. I've never even heard of The Spoils, so, abstain.
Match 7
Mage Knight: The Board Game
Taboo
I don't know much about Mage Knight, but Taboo isn't really my thing. Pass.
Match 8
Bohnanza
Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization
And after a bunch of rounds where I haven't played either, we get to one with two games I really like. Bonhnana is probably my favourite trading type game, because it balances itself very well, and has interesting but difficult to master mechanics. TtA is amazing, though. Relatively simple for a civilisation game, but strategically difficult with no obviously dominant strategies. Every game I end up playing in different ways, and I still feel like I'm learning the game after perhaps 10-15 plays.
-
Comments on my votes:
I am not a big fan of 7 Wonders. Scrabble is a game often played badly, but played in a good way (i.e., asynchronously and electronically), it is a superb word game. IRL I would much rather play 7 Wonders, but I would prefer async Scrabble to any version of 7W.
Haven't played SGS, enjoy Set.
I love Mafia, but I prefer The Resistance. And I love Ra a bit more.
Twilight Struggle is the best game ever made. Even Dominion couldn't have won this one for me.
Not a big fan of either, but slightly bigger fan of PR.
Haven't played either.
I don't like either.
Bohnanza is a great gateway and packs a lot of interesting decisions into a fast game. Only played 1 4p TTA game that took forever.
-
Only played 1 4p TTA game that took forever.
Oh, yeah, don't play TtA 4p, at least not IRL. I did it once and it was awful.
-
(If your favorite game is in one of these matches - and especially if you were the only one to nominate it, and double-especially if I had never heard of it until putting this together - I would really appreciate hearing about what you see in it.)
I've only ever played RPGs with one group close friends. We've played Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Everquest, Spycraft, and Dungeons and Dragons. In my nomination list, Star Wars was 4th and DnD was 5th. I just couldn't not nominate any RPGs, and these two are my favorites out of the ones we've played. Somehow these feel more subjective to me than any other nominations, because a lot of the experience is specific to those friends, and I'm not sure I'd ever go play DnD with strangers at a FLGS game night.

And some comments:
Match 1:
I haven't had the time to try out 7 Wonders yet. But I am a word fan, and Scrabble is always fun. I would love to try out 7 Wonders, and the reason I passed here is that I wouldn't want to give a vote on Scrabble just because I haven't played a game I would like to try out. Besides, I'm pretty sure I would vote for 7 Wonders if I had played it.
Match 2:
Set holds a special place in my heart. I like the game, but more importantly it was the game that brought me and my girlfriend together. Not much contest here.
Match 3:
I love myself some social games of deceit.
Match 4:
I kinda like those big games like Twilight Struggle. But I prefer the multiplayer ones with a lot of table talk, diplomatics and such. I have yet to see what's better in a huge game between two players rather than four. I'm not super into Star Wars, but I have tried the RPG and I think it works. You can never have too much RPG.
Match 5:
I've never played either of those games. I have heard about them and would love to try them out.
Match 6:
I was the one who nominated The Spoils. A lot of players compare it to MTG, but I don't really think that's fair. Sure, it has a lot of similarities and is mostly based on MTG, but in the end, it's like comparing Dominion to Nightfall. If you ever have the option to try it out, I suggest you do. It's a really fun and strategic game.
Match 7:
How can one not love Taboo?
Match 8:
Bohnanza is the set collection game for me. It's fast paced and really easy to get into.
-
Match 8:
Bohnanza is the set collection game for me. It's fast paced and really easy to get into.
Yeah, I felt quite bad giving it the kick, but this pairing was a bit like this season's UEFA Champion's League Group D.
-
Lekkit, we have no votes in common. :P
Match 7:
How can one not love Taboo?
It's interesting how many voted for Taboo. I mean, yeah, Taboo is a fun party game any you really can't compare Mage Knight with Taboo.
Bohnanza and TtA aren't comparable either.
Through the Ages and Mage Knight both take a long time, yeah, that might be scary for many. And the rules are complex, yeah I agree. But in both games the rules are so intuitive that once you know the rules, you can't forget them so quick. I just learned TtA a few days ago. And in my second game I had nearly no questions anymore. Both games are so beautiful designed that mechanics and theme go well hand in hand. The only other reason I think someone wouldn't like Mage Knight is that every turn is like a puzzle to solve, but I thought Dominion players would love that. Regarding Civilization vs. Through the Ages: I only played the first one face to face (and PBF once on BGG) and the other one only online, so I'm not sure which one I like more. I hope these both games don't play against each other. Both are well designed and balanced. Through the Ages has better mechanics, but Civilization has a map/exploration and other elements I love and miss in Through the Ages. Btw, anyone played Clash of the Cultures? I think I would love this one too.
-
Yeah, I'm disliking the Bohnanza vs. TtA match here. It's probably my 4th favourite game of the list, but TtA I like more, so sorry Bohnanza.
-
Yeah, if Bohnanza was up against a different game (and one I know), then I'd be more likely to vote beans.
Anything is going to have a rough time when paired with Through the Ages. I think the explosion we've had on BGO shows that.
-
Yeah, I'm so glad I introduced it here.

Actually, upon further reflection, I would like to change my vote from 7 Wonders to Scrabble. I had gone off of which game I play more, but I prefer Scrabble as a game than 7 Wonders. I'll play them both, but I just don't play Scrabble that often nowadays. I shouldn't let that affect my vote.

I'm getting worried with all the votes for Scrabble. Really hope 7 Wonders wins this one.

I have the same feeling about all the votes on Taboo and Bohnanza.
-
I like Bohnanza, so I won't be terribly upset if it beats out Through the Ages. I still prefer TtA, but I think I may also have a man-crush on Vlaada Chvatil. I haven't played a game of his that I didn't like. That being said, I haven't played Mage Knight, but I have no reason to believe I won't like it.

For me it's like Kuildeous said. Not a really good Division, most of the games I never played.
Stone Age - Monad: I don't know Monad and I'm not a real fan of Stone Age either. I like other Worker Placement games more.
Stratego - Go: This is easy. I played a lot of Stratego and I really like it. Go is for me a boring version of Chess. Please excuse me, all Go lovers.
Fiasco - Dungeon Lords: I'm not a role playing guy and I'm not really interested in most Dungeon themed games. I really don't know why.
Mr. Jack - Telestrations: I've heard of Mr. Jack and never heard of Telestrations. Hmm, that's about it.
Small World - Spades: Small World is fun, but I never played Spades. It's not that famous in Europe. But I savely vote for Small World here.
1830: Railways & Robber Barons - Hearts: I like Hearts and I don't know 1830.
Chess - Brass: Chess isn't my favourite abstract game, but I like it. Never played Brass though.
Asteroyds - Race for the Galaxy: I don't know Asteroyds and I only played RftG against the AI.

I suspect I would have voted for Eat Poop You Cat if I had actually played Mr. Jack. I think EPYC is a fun little party game, and Telestrations gives you easy-to-use materials to play it. Alas, I can't vote against Mr. Jack without having played it, and it sounds like it's fun enough that my vote might not be so certain. Sorry, Telestrations, I can't vote for you in future brackets.

We'll call this the Gateway Division, with two of the "big three" (as I called them earlier) bookending the bracket and quite a few other newbie-friendly offerings. On a personal note, this division features none of my nominations (each of the other divisions have two), which isn't to say I hate all these games, they just aren't in my top 10. None of the BGG top 10 appear either, with relative newcomer The Castles of Burgundy ranking highest at 16.

In case you aren't up with the BGG news GT is coming to IOS
Lol, I just checked this and it's supposed to have async online play.

I'll vote castles of burgundy.
You will not regret that vote. It's a super-quality game.

I'm struggling to think of a name for this one, so I'll go with the Revision Division, as it features several games with multiple versions. There also seems to be a sub-theme of Euro vs. Ameritrash, though there's a lot of that throughout the bracket. Two BGG top 10 games, Agricola and Power Grid, as well as the two highest ranked 2012 games to make the bracket.

"Any expansions are included with the base game - for example, if Dominion were included in the tournament, you would be basing your vote on all the cards, or any subset cards you prefer to play with. Alternate names/editions will be combined, as will very similar games within the same family."
It's not totally clear from my wording, but the intention here with game families is that you can base your vote on whichever edition you like.

Way behind on comments, apologies for the long post:
Division 2
- Stone Age has gotten a tad stale, but it's still a solid worker placement game, and I have no interest in Monad.
- Stratego was a childhood favorite, but it's not very interesting to me now. Go is something I would like to study, if I didn't have so many other interests eating my time.
- Love Dungeon Lords... would probably enjoy Fiasco, but hard for an RPG to win me over in general.
- Mr. Jack wins by default; Telestrations/EPYC is more of an activity than a game (though an entertaining one).
- Spades is another old favorite, which I still would play. Small World is alright, but my copy got left with my ex and I haven't felt compelled to get another.
- Hearts is in the same boat as Spades; I want to try 1830, but in general I don't like stock games much at all.
- Toughest matchup of this group is Chess vs. Brass. Chess is of course the lifelong favorite, but Brass has been an online addiction only surpassed by Dominion for the past year or so.
- Race for the Galaxy is my third favorite game (behind Mafia and Dominion). Easy choice.
Division 3
- Caracassonne is alright, but never grabbed me (probably because I was into much heavier games before I ever tried it). Tigris & Euphrates is a more interesting game.
- Galaxy Trucker wins the battle of games I haven't played; it's near the top of my to-play list, whereas I have no interest in the Trans ____ games.
- Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation is a really elegant design that I wish I could get to the table more. Citadels I haven't had a chance to try, but I don't forsee it jumping ahead in this matchup when I do.
- Kingdom Builder. I hate Boggle.
- Mao is a novel, puzzle-ish game. Charades is usually lame on its own (though I do like certain variants - Time's Up is excellent and has a Charades component toward the end; Reverse Charades was a blast at BGG.con).
- Alhambra wins mostly due to my friend Jay complaining about his play of Imperial. I suspect I wouldn't like it much, between the stocks and politics. (I do like the rondel mechanic as a general concept, though.)
- The Castles of Burgundy is a really nice design; Love Letter seems alright but with not much meat.
- The Settlers of Catan in a close one. I actually don't let myself play Settles anymore (I find the negotiation aspect too stressful), but it's undeniably a classic. Meanwhile, I think BSG is a fun experience, but I'm not sure about it as a game.
Division 4
- Ticket to Ride is alright I guess, but Diplomacy is a classic, and was my second favorite game for a long time (exclusively PBF).
- My first passes of the tournament, back-to-back. I disliked Power Grid in my one play of it, and haven't played Blood Bowl (though I disliked Team Manager, so I don't have hopes that I would like it anyway).
- Tales of the Arabian Nights is again a fun experience more than a good game. I haven't played Goa and think I might prefer it if I had.
- Pandemic beats Magic in a close one. Pandemic is a lot of fun both co-op and solo. I like Magic in limited formats, but I only rarely play.
- Tzolk'in I think is really solid after two plays. Tichu I'd like to get better at, but it's not going to beat a good Euro.
- Terra Mystica is my favorite of the new games, and I have little interest in Niagara.
- I have bad associations with Dixit, plus is not much of a game. The cards are awesome, though. Hanabi wins easily.
- See above comments about RPGs; D&D could be fun with a good DM and the right crowd, but Agricola is excellent.
-
Real Blood Bowl has hardly anything in common with Team Manager I think, but I disliked the latter, too.

Diplomacy
Diplomacy is one of those games that I finds persists primarily on reputation alone. It's an okayish game, but in terms of long, low (or even no) luck multiplayer strategy games, I feel there are much better options. TtR is far from a favourite game, but it's strategic, relatively quick and fun.
Match 26
Blood Bowl (All Editions)
Power Grid
I've heard bad things about Blood Bowl, and Power Grid is fun. Unfortunately that's about as far as I can go.
Match 27
Tales of the Arabian Nights
Goa
Never played either. Pass.
Match 28
Pandemic
Magic: The Gathering
Pandemic is one of the best co-ops out their, hampered only by the frequent play by dictator that can happen. Magic could be the best game in the world, it's still just not worth the price. And the times I've played Magic, I enjoyed it, but it didn't make me go away and wish I could play it more.
Match 29
Tzolk'in: The Mayan Calender
Tichu
Never played Tichu, but it's not a game that appeals to me. Tzolk'in is really fun though. Strategic and fun.
Match 30
Niagara
Terra Mystica
The one time I played Naigara, I really enjoyed it. Terra Mystica is a name I often see thrown around but it doesn't really interest me.
Match 31
Dixit
Hanabi
Dixit is a really nice game, it's very relaxing fun. Hanabi is the opposite, extremely stressful, but rewarding. I like to be able to talk openly and make jokes during my games though, and Hanabi really restricts that, so it has to be Dixit.

Ticket to Ride - Diplomacy: Diplomacy wasn't so appealing here to me. So, it's an easy choice.
Blood Bowl (All Editions) - Power Grid: I'm learning Power Grid currently here in the forums and it's fun, probably not one of my favourites, but it's neat. I haven't played Blood Bowl yet, so I have to pass.
Tales of the Arabian Nights - Goa: I'm interested in both, but never played either.
Pandemic - Magic: The Gathering: I love Pandemic and MtG is a good game too, but Pandemic is still the obvious choice.
Tzolk'in: The Mayan Calender - Tichu: I don't like the "pure" Worker Placement games that much. I never played Tzolk'in and it seems it might be one of the better Worker Placement games, but still doesn't appeal to me that much. Tichu on the other side is a great game. If I only had more players to play it F2F!
Niagara - Terra Mystica: Never played either of those. I'm looking forward to play Terra Mystica in the forums, but I really can't vote here.
Dixit - Hanabi: This is tough. I really like Hanabi, but Dixit is also a good party game. I guess I have to go with Hanabi.
Dungeons & Dragons - Agricola: I wasn't that overwhelmed after my first playthrough of Agricola. It's a good game, but I'm not sure if I try it again. D&D on the other side doesn't appeal to me at all, because I'm not a role player. It's safe to vote for Agricola here.

(the only match where I played both, and boy is this hard. When in doubt, pick the classic, but let's face facts, one of these two I haven't played for decades, for reasons of long playing time, rare player count, and awkward n-way-draw endings.)
Power Grid
(never played Blood Bowl, but American football does not really click with me, and Power Grid is one of my favourites.)
Tales of the Arabian Nights
(never played Goa, and Tales can be a PITA if you are not in the mood for it. Still, you got to honour the yuthor's work on that.)
Magic: The Gathering
(never played Pandemic, but a bit reserved towards cooperative games. Space Alert didn't score with my family.)
Tichu
(never played Tzol'kin, heard good things, but when in doubt, pick the classic)
Terra Mystica
(never played Niagara, but TM is the shit.)

Civilization Division looks set for a difficult final four, with each match featuring a BGG top 13 game, and also three DS.com PBF favorites still alive. Meanwhile, seeding favorite Race for the Galaxy is the top remaining in Classics Division at 19, while three pre-1950 games continue to hang around. We nearly avoid matching up two nominations from anyone's list, but with 7 Wonders getting so much love it's no surprise that its match breaks that trend.

Mafia/Werewolf vs Twilight Struggle: I actually love both these games, but how can I vote against Mafia?
Puerto Rico: Never played Civilization the board game, but Puerto Rico was a gateway game for me. It was mindblowing for me and my friends who spent a couple years playing this obsessively.
Dungeon Lords vs Mr. Jack: I haven't played either of these, but have heard good things about both of them. I liked Dungeon Petz when I played it. Interested in seeing what wins this one.

I cant help but think we should have limited this to board games or Chess's universal appeal and the fact that everybody has probably played it over thier lives gives it a distinct advantage.
-
I don't think it's a problem. Chess is already losing this round and even if it does pull out the win, there are a lot of other strong contenders around. Fairly certain Chess is not going to win this.
-
Also, Chess IS a boardgame. I don't see how limiting it to boardgames would solve the "Chess has an advantage" problem.

My thoughts on this set:
Division 1/2
- Favorite gateway game vs. more-puzzle-than-game which I would have liked as a kid but have little interest in playing now. 7 Wonders easily.
- The all-time favorite wins, but Twilight Struggle is a worthy opponent.
- Puerto Rico is a classic. Civilization is fun, but I'd rather play the video game version (or Through the Ages, for that matter).
- I'm up over 50 games of Through the Ages now; meanwhile, what I said about Taboo causing arguments still applies.
- Stone Age easily over Stratego - Stone Age may have gotten a little stale, but Stratego holds no interest at all any more.
- Mr. Jack is a nice two player that I would like to explore more, but it doesn't have the depth and fun of Dungeon Lords.
- "Spades is another old favorite, which I still would play. Small World is alright, but my copy got left with my ex and I haven't felt compelled to get another." - Replace Spades with Hearts for this round...
- Another tough matchup for Chess, and again I go with the newer favorite.
Next set up tomorrow, get your votes in before then...

What kind of arguments does Taboo cause for your group?
-
Playing with family, we always seemed to end up having arguments over whether a clue given was too close to something on the card.

Match 41
Carcassonne

GT is a long time favourite of mine. Carcassonne always seems to drag, even though games take about 30-60 minutes.
Match 42
Citadels
Kingdom Builder
Not played either.
Match 43
Mao
Alhambra
Alhambra wins by default of actually being a game, not a social experiment.
Match 44
The Castles of Burgundy
The Settlers of Catan
Not played Castles of Burgundy but heard good things about it. Not a fan of Settlers, too political.
Match 45
Ticket to Ride
Power Grid
TtR is a nice fun quick(ish) game, while Power Grid is a deep, complex strategic game. I'm a strategy person, so PG gets the point.
Match 46
Goa
Pandemic
Pandemic is one of my favourite co-ops. Don't know Goa, but sorry if it's actually good.
Match 47
Tichu
Terra Mystica
Don't know either, neither really appeal to me.
Match 48
Hanabi
Agricola
Hanabi is fun, but scares me (in a bad way). Agricola I've only played a few times, but I've enjoyed it each time so far.

Reasoning:
Match 41
Carcassonne
Galaxy Trucker
I dislike Carcassonne and though GT is annoying to explain like all Vlaada games, it is unique and barrels of fun.
Match 42
Citadels
Kingdom Builder
I really dislike Citadels and I do like KB quite a bit.
Match 43
Mao
Alhambra
Alhambra wins by default of actually being a game, not a social experiment.
Match 44
The Castles of Burgundy
The Settlers of Catan
Catan is the classic. How can you not vote for Catan? Deeper than it seems at first.
Match 45
Ticket to Ride
Power Grid
TtR is kind of annoying to me. I'd have voted for it in a lot of other places, but PG is too good of a game to overlook my dislikes of TtR (long playtime, dream-shattering, etc.)
Match 46

Pandemic
Pandemic is wonderful.

Match 41
Carcassonne
Galaxy Trucker
I actually enjoy Carcassonne quite a bit. It has its faults, but I'm happy to break it out on occasion. Galaxy Trucker on the other hand is so very different from the rest, and just more fun to play.
Match 42
Citadels
Kingdom Builder
I have Citadels, never played Kingdom Builder. I don't dislike Citadels, but it tends to drag on a bit too long for what it is. I don't like it well enough to vote it over a game I've never played.
Match 43
Mao
Alhambra
Never played either.
Match 44
The Castles of Burgundy
The Settlers of Catan
Although Castles of Burgundy might be a good game (I've not played it), I really like Settlers. The game that got me started into board games (previously I thought that all those board games at the back of the store looked too "gimicky" while I was picking up RPG books or 40k minis). I still enjoy it quite a bit even if other games have surpassed it for regular play.
Match 45
Ticket to Ride
Power Grid
Ticket to Ride is good light fun, great for hanging out with people and playing a game. Power Grid is just so much deeper and satisfying, great for playing a game with people.
Match 46
Goa
Pandemic
Pandemic is great. I've always loved cooperative puzzle-solving (whether jigsaws, crosswords, whatever). Pandemic is essentially that for me, a shifting puzzle to be figured out with others. Never played Goa, but Pandemic is just so good.
Match 47
Tichu
Terra Mystica
I'm enjoying playing Terra Mystica in the forum-games section. I've never played Tichu. But I have played, and quite enjoy ladder-climbing games (recently got Haggis to do this 2/3-player). The trick-taking element of Haggis makes it even more interesting (and I think Tichu has this too, except with partnerships?). Terra Mystica strikes me as a little fiddly (while still fun), even though I've never played the physical game, just a few too many unrelated things going on. It's cool and fun, but lacks elegance. Tichu OTOH embodies many things that I enjoy in games generally, I've just never played it. So, I've abstained.
Match 48
Hanabi
Agricola
Hanabi seems pretty cool from what I watched here. Interesting deduction elements. But I'm pretty confident that Agricola is in my top-5 games, so that's where I'm voting. I got creamed my first play of Agricola, and all the possibilities stuck in my mind trying to figure out how to get a *working* farm. Then I played a single-player first-round of the game until I started to get a feel for it, and it was still on my mind for about a week as I did that. Then I won more often than not for a few games as I tried to express what I'd learned and help my opponents improve. I think we're at the point where it's a pretty even game again, and it's cool to watch the strategy-space develop.

Our first big upsets (at least by seeding) in the second half of the round, with Galaxy Trucker knocking out overall 3 seed Carcassonne to prevent an all-gateway final four in Gateway Division, while Power Grid knocks off 7 seed Ticket to Ride in a battle of 2004 games. The big matchup of the round is Puerto Rico vs. Through the Ages, both ranked top 4 on BGG and our only games to get exactly 3 nominations to place them in the 8-9 matchup. Pandemic is the lowest seed remaining, but gets a lot of "listed lower" love (as does its opponent).

Match 49
7 Wonders
Mafia/Werewolf
I find this comparison difficult, but interesting... Mafia is a former favourite, but I've gone off of it more and more recently. 7 Wonders I've done the opposite, come to like more and more as time goes on. It's simple, but has tactical and strategic depth, and is a lot of fun to play with various numbers. Mafia I've played a lot, and I still feel it comes down mostly to guesswork almost always. F2F it can be fun in the right group, and online it's really impossible to get a good read without sinking huge amounts of time.
Match 50
Puerto Rico
Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization
TtA has quickly propelled itself up to being one of my favourite games. Puerto Rico I've played a few times, and it's okay, but not a game I really want to play much.
Match 51
Stone Age
Dungeon Lords
Not played either.
Match 52
Hearts
Race for the Galaxy
I don't like RftG. I feel like maybe I should give it another go now, though, perhaps... eh.
Match 53
Galaxy Trucker
Kingdom Builder
Kingdom Builder does look good, but Galaxy Trucker man! Probably the best real time game I've played, and a lot of fun as long as you don't object to your ship falling apart a lot.
Match 54
Alhambra
The Settlers of Catan
Not a Settlers fan. Alhambra seems okay.
Match 55
Power Grid
Pandemic
Tough choice... the iconic Co-op against a real unique and impressive game. Pandemic wins it for me, I think... primarily because it's incredible with the expansion.
Match 56
Terra Mystica
Agricola
Hmm... I haven't played enough Agricola to really judge how much I like it, and Terra Mystica didn't really appeal to me. Had to pass.
Am I correct in thinking these are the only 16 games still in?

Match 52:
I don't dislike Hearts, but given the choice I can't imagine ever wanting to play it over RftG.
Match 53:
Kingdom Builder has a neat concept, but Galaxy Trucker how it incorporates time and puzzles is pretty brilliant and incredibly entertaining.
Match 55:
Oh man tough choice, but Power Grid is slightly more elegant in executing its themes. Imho anyways.

I don't think I've given reasons for anything before, and it won't be so interesting because most of mine are passes, but...
Match 49
7 Wonders
Mafia/Werewolf
7 Wonders is an easy choice for me. I would call this my absolute favourite game right now. IRL it is quick and can fit in many people. The learning curve is not steep, but there is certainly some skill involved.
I enjoy Mafia, but the reward-to-effort ratio is not as strong. In real life, it feels a bit random to me. I mean, it can come down to reading people physically, so there's that. But I don't like it as much. I prefer online Mafia, but THAT game is a different beast and requires a LOT of effort, IMO.
Match 50
Puerto Rico
Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization
I haven't played TtA. I've played Puerto Rico once and I somehow won, even though I felt I was behind for most of the game. Basically I never had any money but managed to start producing lots of Indigo and ship it repeatedly. Probably the other players didn't have much more of a clue than I did, though most had played it before.
But this was a pass.
Match 51
Stone Age
Dungeon Lords
Haven't played either.
Match 52
Hearts
Race for the Galaxy
I haven't played RftG but I know of it. I really enjoy Hearts, enough to vote it over a game I haven't tried. I kind of expect RftG to pull through in the end anyway, although early votes seem to favour Hearts.
Match 53
Galaxy Trucker
Kingdom Builder
Haven't played either, so pass here as well. From what I know of the games, I imagine I would prefer Galaxy Trucker for the unique experience.
Match 54
Alhambra
The Settlers of Catan
Haven't played Alhambra but Settlers still has a hold of me. Still love it.
Match 55
Power Grid
Pandemic
Passed on this... I played each of these once, and in both games we messed it up a bit.
In Power Grid, one of our players had to leave early on. We continued without resetting, which really upset the balance because of the extra space left by the missing player. It allowed me and another player to race ahead, building lots of cities for relatively cheap.
In Pandemic, we decided to play with 5 players even though it was only meant for 4 (IIRC). We didn't stand a chance.
Match 56
Terra Mystica
Agricola
I have not played either of these either, so another pass. I own Agricola though! I just haven't had a chance to try it out. I hope that impulse buy will turn out to be a good one.
-
Yep, these are the final 16.

When I was in high school (I think), I made up a Diamonds game. I cannot remember how it went, and though a group of us planned to, I never got to try it out.
As for Clubs, there is this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUdIiIFYnm4). I don't think it will hold up. It's not even really a trick-taking game.

Power Grid (haven't played Pandemic but cooperative games are not so hot with me)

-
Match 49
7 Wonders
Mafia/Werewolf
7 Wonders is probably my favorite game right now. Its so much fun, so quick, and easy to play. It gets major points from me for being easier to get to the table than anything else.
Mafia is fun, although Ive only played it online, and not FtF. Copying what Tables said above, the reward-to-effort ratio is not great. I often walk away from a game promising to never do it again, even if it was fun, just due to the large time commitment.
7 Wonders gets the vote here.
Match 50
Puerto Rico
Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization
Puerto Rico is really fun, and although Ive only gotten to play it ~5 times, Ive really enjoyed playing it, especially as everyone Ive played with has gotten better with each play. It just seems like every game, were learning constantly, getting better, and to me its a really intriguing game.
I actually played my first game of TtA this afternoon it was only the short version, but I still enjoyed it, and I can see that it has a lot of depth and strategy to it. Right now, its still behind PR, but I could see it passing it very soon.
Match 51
Stone Age
Dungeon Lords
Haven't played either.
Match 52
Hearts
Race for the Galaxy
Never played RftG, but heard great things. However, Hearts is one of my favorite games, and I grew up playing it and lost count of how many games Ive played. Definitely hearts here, and I really hope it pulls through.
Match 53
Galaxy Trucker
Kingdom Builder
Have not played either game.
Match 54
Alhambra
The Settlers of Catan
Alhambra looks very cool, I have not played it but Ive wanted to try. However, Catan is one of the games that got me interested in buying other games, and I still play it semi-frequently with my non-gaming friends, so it gets the vote here.

Gonna give my reasons this time because I can...
Match 49
7 Wonders
Mafia/Werewolf
7 Wonders is a whole lot of fun for the 30 mins it takes. And it can play up to 7 (8) without adding additional playtime. Mafia is fun, but only when you can devote a week or two of your life (I've only ever played online) to a game, and more and more I can't do that. Mafia also gets longer and longer with extra players, and don't get me started on player elimination...
Match 50
Puerto Rico
Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization
After Dominion (and all of its expansions) Tta is my other 10 on BGG. I've only been playing for a month or two, but in that time I've played 10 or so games and each game I'm enjoying more and more. If BGG would let me rate a game more than 10 this would be leaving even Dominion in its dust... There, I said it. Banish me from f.DS. It was worth it.
Match 51
Stone Age
Dungeon Lords
Never played Lords but I've seen reviews and it kind of looks more complex than it needs to be for what it is. Stone Age, on the other hand, is an excellent light Worker Placement and WP is probably my all time favourite single mechanic.
Match 52
Hearts
Race for the Galaxy
I must say, I'm surprised at how many Hearts votes there have been. I voted for it because I nominated it but I fully expected a one sided match in RFTG's favour here when I saw the match list. I don't dislike RFTG. It's just one of the games I tell myself "This is totally my type of game... if I could play enough to get my head around what the hell is going on" (see Glory to Rome for another game in this category). Unfortunately, I can't bring myself to get those extra plays. I'd rather play something else that I already understand and enjoy.
Match 53
Galaxy Trucker
Kingdom Builder
Never played Galaxy Trucker, but I've played time pressure games (Space Alert, Escape the Cursed Temple) before and they just didn't do it for me. At all. Kingdom Builder is simple and fun. It has wooden bits and is very colourful. It has "Donald X Vaccarino" on the box.
Match 54
Alhambra
The Settlers of Catan
When I saw Alhambra played on TableTop I thought "Wow. What a fun little game!" I couldn't wait to get to play it. Then I played it. Maybe it was just a bad experience, but it just felt like I was completely screwed by luck of the draw and it sucked all of the fun out for me. Everytime it was my turn there were no buildings I wanted (or could afford) to buy. Every time I did get to buy something (whether I wanted it or not) it seemed that I immediately turned over exactly what the next person wanted at a price they could pay exact change for. Settlers gets my vote because it's at least an average game.
Match 55
Power Grid
Pandemic
I am not a fan of co-operative games. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one, but I'll always turn them down if there's something else available (and sometimes I'll sit out even when there's not another game I can join). It's made worse by the fact that Pandemic, Forbidden Island and Flash Point are all essentially the same game, meaning that the co-op fans ask me to join them 3 times as often. Yes, it's the "one person plays and everyone else does what they're told" thing. Even when the "leader" is me I don't enjoy it, because I feel that I'm playing a solo game and ruining the fun for the others. I figured the time pressure co-ops would solve this issue so I gave the two I mentioned earlier a go, but as I said before, they have their own issues and at this point I'm pretty sure there's no co-op that I'd enjoy. Power grid isn't my favourite game, but it's solid and well designed. The club I play at also owns a bajillion maps for the game so it's not going to get samey too quickly either.
Match 56
Terra Mystica
Agricola
Agricola is such a good game. I mentioned my love for Worker Placement earlier and I'm not sure if there's a game that does it better than Agricola. 've never played Terra Mystica. I voted for Terra Mystica. What's going on here? Basically, I've watched pretty much every Terra Mystica video I can find and read the rules and it looks like it could be my third 10. Haven't watched the PBFs here because I just can't get my head around the spreadsheets. I need to see the actual boards. I'm just waiting for someone at my club to pick up a copy then I'll be playing this on a weekly basis for at least a month or two. I'm all about mechanics and I just love some of the mechanics in this game. I love the way unbuilt buildings cover up potential income on your player board and you have to build them to uncover and receive it (yeah, I know this is functionally equivalent to "each X you have built produces Y each turn", but the uncoverings this is just so much cooler). And then there's the power bowls. Whoever came up with that is a genius. And I haven't even started on the variety in this game...
-
> Haven't watched the PBFs here because I just can't get my head around the spreadsheets.
There's an interface they use over there in BGG PBF which looks more like a board. The spreadsheet board of square hexes designed by Watno works surprisingly well for me though.
-
7 Wonders
Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization
Stone Age
Race for the Galaxy
Galaxy Trucker
Kingdom Builder
Alhambra
Power Grid
Terra Mystica
@TINAS: I assume you're refering to the player boards regarding PBF? The map came out quite good I think.
-
Yeah, mostly. I do prefer a hex map made out of hexes rather than squares though.
-
Finally! A round where I can vote in each and every match. I feel like my whole life has been building up to this. Well, maybe the past couple of weeks.

Agricola - 5 | 1.75 | mith, hsaile, michaeljb, Rabid, Insomniac; Davio
No big surprises here; 6 of our top 8 seeds have survived to the quarterfinals, along with Dominion's little brother Kingdom Builder and 4-time Aldie Award Winner (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/154573/) Power Grid. No game has fewer than 3 lists supporting it. Civilization Division and Gateway Division both give us a name-worthy finals, while the other matchups are pre-historic vs. futuristic and another BGG top 10 battle.
The bonus matches for this round are the 16 games which were next on someone's list - there were no overlaps (though some did appear later on others' lists), but some lists were exhausted for the main bracket.

-
eHalcyon. (It's all in the spreadsheet; click "Bracket" in the OP.)
-
Thanks mith! eHalc's Canadian I think so I guess Big Two has traveled across the country at least. Or maybe we learned it from their end of the country.

I am Canadian, yeah. It comes from China!

I am in Alberta, so not quite across the country, though I expect that Big Two will be found there as well. I also know of two primary variations, which we call "Chinese style" and "Vietnamese style". I'm reading the Big Two article now; I think what we call "Vietnamese style Big Two" is actually Tien Len (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tien_len).

Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization
Extremely tough choice. Both are very fun games, two of my favourites. TtA wins it out I think by being my current addiction.
Match 58
Stone Age
Race for the Galaxy
I still dislike RtfG. Yup, hate voting.
Match 59
Kingdom Builder
The Settlers of Catan
I'm not a Settlers fan, but it's tolerable. Kingdom Builder looks interesting but I haven't played it. Not informed enough to vote.
Match 60
Power Grid
Agricola
Another tough choice. Agricola has really grown on me recently, while Power Grid is a longstanding favourite.
Bonus Match 1
The Resistance
Navegador
Pictionary
Poker
Don't know Navegador, so that's out. Pictionary is a light party game, okay, whatever. Poker isn't my thing, at all. Resistance is my favourite social deduction game, because it gives players information, and more as the game goes on, in a smooth way, and also has the slightly reversed objective of not finding scum, but finding allies.
Bonus Match 2
Innovation
The Speicherstadt
Ascension
Village
Ascension I've played twice, it's pretty meh. The Speicherstadt I've never heard of. Innovation is a pretty fun game, moreso with fewer players, but Village is really fun.
Bonus Match 3
Time's Up
The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game
Empire Builder
Memoir '44
I don't really know any of these.
Bonus Match 4
Bridge
Cyclades
Ghost Stories
Big Two
Bridge doesn't interest me much. Cyclades is a fun game, I really want to give it another go because I've only played it once so far. Ghost Stories is alright, but nothing more. Big Two I don't know.

Power Grid
Again, both excellent games. I've not played Power Grid maybe as much as I should have done owing to its bland look and theme. Kingdom Builder gets it here.
Bonus Match 5
Ghost Stories
Innovation
Poker
The Resistance
Village
Village was good when I played it, but I'm not ruching to play it again. Ghost stories is a co-op. Poker is fine, but not really a "game" like the others, so I don't think it really fits in this tournament. Innovation and The Resistance are two of my favourites. Innovation took it here due to my recent splurge (thanks, Isotropic), and due to The Resistance taking the backseat to Panic Station for a while at my club.
Bonus Match 6
Eclipse
Android: Netrunner
Le Havre
Caylus
Never played Eclipse or Android. The themes don't interest me but I'm sure they are good games. Le Harve and Caylus are both great games, but I don't play them often because usually Agricola (or Tzolk'in) scratches that particular itch. Caylus gets it though.
Bonus Match 7
7 Wonders
Hearts
Citadels
Agricola
Err... I had to go back and check my nominations list here becuase this looks like the list I submitted. They're all on my nominations except Agricola, and I assume that's because I figured other people would make that particular nomination. I don't get how Kingdom Builder got so far. I mean it's not a bad game, but it's not really good either. Obviously it has to do with people here being Donald X fanboys, but of the Donald X games I have played (Dominion, Kingdom Builder, Gauntlet of Fools and Nefarious), it's easily the worst.

Strongly Disagree. Kingdom Builder is an amazing game and won the SDJ.
-
So did Auf Achse and Heimlich & Co.
-
It's a good game for SDJ audience, and I can play it with my family. but I wouldn't ever suggest it in my gaming group or call it a favourite.

So did Dominion.
-
So did Dominion.
That really adds nothing. You used for all x SDJ(x) => GoodGame(x), and as I understand Watno provided an example contradicting that. The fact that you know of a particular game x such that SDJ(x) => GoodGame(x) provides no evidence to support that for some other game y SDJ(y) => GoodGame(y).
Yes, I am sad that all my favorite games are out of contest, so I am rambling about other things.

I have not played either of the games given as contradictions, nor did I intend my claim to mean that winning an SDJ makes a game good. I claimed that I liked Kingdom Builder and it won an SDJ (and has made it thus far in the tourney) thusly I must assume that I am not the only one that believes Kingdom Builder is a good game. I was simply referencing an award that it won from an outside source that is not clearly DxV fanboys.
-

The apparent fallacy I pointed out was not in this original argument, which BTW I think its reasonable, but in the "so did Dominion" remark, which did not reinforce the argument nor provide any new arguments regarding Kingdom Builder or the "fanboys" issue or anything related. Thus, the "add nothing" at the beginning of my message.

Surely though if the original example listed bad games that won the SDJ, listing a counter argument of other good games helps raise the accuracy of the SDJ back up a little when determinign ifit can make good games.
and with no other outside source, if you are ranking games you have neaver heard ofor played, then one that has Won the SDJ will have a better chance of being good than one that hasn't? (Note: Chance, not 'will be')

I hardly think citing one example of a good game that won the SDJ right after an example of a bad game is really bad strategy if you are planning on some using statistical arguments. Maybe if instead of 1 he had cited a list of 10 or 20 examples, then the statistical significance of the post would have been clear.

How about
Unofficial Bonus Match: Hearts vs. Spades... vs. Bridge?
-
Through the Ages
Kingdom Builder
No more bonuses? :(
TTA is an easy decision. KB vs RFTG was tough, but I'm more inclined to play a game of KB when suggested so that's my vote.

Tough one, but Through the Ages gets the nod.

Oh man! This is so freakin' tough!
Both matches, actually, are killing me.
Okay, going to go with:
Through the Ages
Kingdom Builder
Excellent finalists. That's rough as hell.

I think I unleashed something good on this community by introducting TtA to it. And I'm happy to see RftG get knocked out, although this has made me think maybe I'll give it another try sometime.
-
Power Grid
Have to go with one that I still pull out after ten years.

I wasn't going to complain about the winner no matter which one it was. Very fine games.
-
Through the Ages, sounds good to me.
I think I'm probably mostly to blame for this one, introducing it to the community and getting lots of new people interested in it...

Oh yes, and we're all so obviously cross with you.
Well, maybe the people who voted for Power Grid, but it really is difficult to say which of those two games I prefer.

Although, I was introduced to the game before it was brought here. I just never played beyond Age I, so you did a great job of showing me the full game, which is really hard to convince new players to try IRL.
