This was my favorite car game of all time (based on the game show (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Password_%28game_show%29)), and I wonder if it can be adapted to a forum game.
The rules:
Two teams of 2. Team A (with Player 1 and Player 2) and Team B (with Player 3 and Player 4).
Player 3 whispers (PMs) a word to Player 1. This is the PASSWORD. It must be a single word, no proper nouns.
Player 1 says (posts publicly) a single word CLUE. CLUEs must be a single word but may be any word (including proper nouns). They cannot contain or be a lexicographic variant of the PASSWORD: i.e., you cannot use "walk" as a CLUE for a PASSWORD of "walking".
Player 2 then has one shot at guessing the PASSWORD from the CLUE. Close variants of the PASSWORD are typically sufficient (i.e., "Walking" is good enough for "Walk").
If Player 2 guesses incorrectly, Player 3 says (posts publicly) a second single word CLUE.
Player 4 then has one shot at guessing the PASSWORD from both of the CLUEs that have been given so far.
If Player 4 guesses incorrectly, Player 1 says (posts publicly) a third single word CLUE. And so on and so forth, to a maximum of 6 CLUEs given in this manner. If after 6 CLUEs there are still no correct guesses, no one gets any points.
Your team scores points if you correctly guess the PASSWORD. You get points based on how many total CLUEs have been uttered -- 10 points after the first clue, 9 after the second, 8 after the third, 7 after the fourth, 6 after the fifth, and 5 after the sixth.
In the next round, Player 1 whispers a PASSWORD to Player 3, with Player 3 giving the first clue. Then Player 4 whispers a PASSWORD to Player 2, with Player 2 giving the first clue, and Player 2 whispers a PASSWORD to Player 4, with Player 4 giving the first CLUE. Then we repeat all over again.
(So the chain is: 3->1, 1->4, 4->2, 2->3.)
The winner is the first team to 100 points.
We wouldn't need a moderator, just four players. Anyone in?
Players:
Team A:
1: Insomniac
2: theory
Team B:
3: Kuildeous
4: Dsell
-
Example of play:
A1 & A2 v B3 & B4
B3 whispers to A1: "Fox"
A1 gives clue: "Crafty"
A2 guesses: "Devious"
B3 gives clue: "Rommel"
B4 guesses: "Fox" -- earning 9 points
-
How long do you think this would take overall?
I think I'd be in.
-
I have no idea whatsoever. Depends on how quickly people play.
-
Obligatory Kristen Wiig/Secret Word reference. (http://www.hulu.com/watch/326429)
-
/in sounds fun
-
Are you actually in, Dsell, or do you just think you are?
PS, I will randomize teams so don't think that you are trapped with me.
-
In!
-
Password is actually pretty fun.
We ran a Password game here at the office. Was a hoot.
I'm /in for that.
-
Sounds like we got our four then!
I'll randomize the teams.
-
Randomized teams:
Team A:
1: Insomniac
2: theory
Team B:
3: Kuildeous
4: Dsell
Kuildeous, please PM Insomniac with a one word PASSWORD.
-
I assume we're allowed to do some outside research in order to give a better clue?
So if you try to trip my up by giving me a really obscure lawyer word, I could research it and give a clue based on that? And Kuildeous could research my clue to find the most likely word?
-
Yes. No limitations on Googling and such. But you obviously cannot communicate with your teammates outside of the clues.
-
Of course. Cool!
-
I hope that doesn't negatively affect the game. In real life you obviously can't Google, which makes the game more of a test of how well you know your teammate's thought processes.
-
I'd be fine playing with a no-googling rule, but googling is fine too.
In the example I gave, Insomniac may have similar trouble guessing your word if he didn't know lawyer jargon. But the googling definitely helps if teammates have some sort of knowledge advantage over the others (same profession, RL friends, etc).
-

I have no reason to believe that Insomniac is a lawyer :)
OTOH, Googling is not that easy when you're only talking about single words! So let's give it a shot and if it ruined this game we'll know better for Password II: Revenge of the Password.
-
I think googling is fine here, there IS a game breaking strategy with it but I don't suspect that will be a problem here as it requires some planning and at that point you might as well just pm the answer which is obviously a rules violation.

Actually, if you want to do that you should just set one up and tell people about it. None of us in the game can fairly make that QT.

Hurray, I was pretty worried that the clues weren't as good as they could have been FWIW my last clue would have been "looting"
-
Not sure if DSell was wanting to throttle me for using "Quiet." I could only think of more synonyms, and I felt that would have beaten the word to death. I tried something different, which is difficult to do when you can only give one word.
-
:'(
I really should've gotten it with "Quiet."
Zoot almost definitely would've done it.
Sorry. Thought I was rather clever with coup though.

No "quiet" was a great clue. But it's really hard to know whether it's a descriptor or a synonym or some other sort of associated word without context. We'll get it yet, though!

A question: It seems that rules do not stop the first clue giver to give the PASSWORD as a CLUE. Is this intentional?
-
A question: It seems that rules do not stop the first clue giver to give the PASSWORD as a CLUE. Is this intentional?
No, that's a small oversight. It should say that you can give any word as a clue except the password itself (and probably any words that share the same root, although man that would be a dumb clue).

Yeah I updated the rules for Password II, and I'll do so now.
No use of the PASSWORD or variant thereof as the CLUE, and guessing a variant of the PASSWORD is good enough.

Not your fault Insomniac, I took a big risk with that clue.

Thanks! I was hoping for one that would be vague after the first clue and perfectly clear after the second.
You gave the clue I hoped you would. ;)
It's risky, though, because Insom could definitely have gotten it!

Also, would "sunscreen" be a valid clue for "sunblock?" Is having part of the word allowed in the clue?

I don't think it is and I've definetly avoided it in clue giving

I was looking at these three clues a lot and just really really stumped. Now that I look at it again it should have (I hope I hope I hope) been obvious after seeing swimming. I was just looking blankly at these clues until a minute ago, though.
-
Yeah, that was a hard clue to do. Okay, so I owe a word to the person that did not give me that one. I think I owe Insomniac a word? I'll verify.
-
Well if we just got 8 points for that, we are over 100!

Good game everyone :-)

Good game all! Nice comeback DSell/K
-
This was a great game! Really good teamwork, it was fun making a comeback in the second half. :D
-
Yes, that was exciting…and challenging. It would have been different if we just randomly received a word, but we had to actually pick one that you wanted to be guessable on the second clue and not the first. Interesting little strategic element there.
-
Fun to watch, I'd play if this happens again.

Did the QT have anything interesting to speak of?

Did the QT have anything interesting to speak of?
Nope. It died fairly quickly. I wanted it just to write how I knew some answers before the players. :)

Probably me, I feel like I did awful in the latter part of this game.

Can someone run Password III and let me play?
-
Would having an external source supply the word make it any different?
-
An external source of words would have been different. I don't know if it'd be better, but it would definitely be different. For one, with an external source, there would be a greater likelihood of words being guessed on the first try (unless that list consists only of difficult words).
Picking your own word added a little bit of strategy. At one point, I thought about giving the password of "corn," but I quickly dismissed it because I figured the other team would start off with "cob," which would have been a giveaway.
"Synchronize" was a pretty difficult word. I don't think there was anything I could have chosen as the clue that would have given it away the first time. And as we saw, it wasn't even that easy of a word to get the second clue on.
Looking back, I think the award goes to Dsell for taking a wide-open word like "jet" and finding the one clue that would narrow it down instantly. That was inspired.
