Well first of all, how many people here watch Survivor? I do, and got thinking: This would be interesting as an online game. But could it work? I don't know.
It would be fairly easy to replicate everything about the game except the physical challenges, stranded on an island, and hunger pains. Everything else should be easy to model.
Here's what I'm envisioning how they game would work: (rough outline)
16 players, divided into 2 teams of 8 people each. Each team (called 'tribe' in Survivor) is given a QT that only members of the team have access to (and spectators). All members of the QT can post freely in it, and will need to converse with one another to figure out challenges, etc.
Each 'game day' is broken up into 5 phases:
Morning Chat Session: Players can talk as much as they want in-thread OR they can privately communicate with other players.
Challenge: Since physical challenges are impossible to do online, a mental challenge will be posted in both the threads for the members to solve. First tribe to solve it, does not have to kick a member of their team off. Private Communication is shut off in this phase.
Afternoon Chat Session: Players can, once again, talk freely in thread or privately communicate with other players to make plans.
Tribal Council: The members who lost the challenge will visit 'Tribal Council'. Private Communication will be shut off. Players are required to speak in-thread about opinions for a little bit. Then I will 'lock the thread' and voting will commence. The player with the most votes is out of the game. Winning team will skip this phase and go directly to night.
Night: All forms of communication are shutoff. I'll be doing some bookkeeping stuff/talk with co-mods.
Cycle will continue until there are 8 players left between the 2 groups. Then the 2 groups will merge to one central thread. Same cycle as above, except with the following tweaks:
-Only a single person can win Challenges. No votes can be put on them.
-Tribal Council is required. Someone will be out each game. This player will NOT be out of the game though. They'll be put in the 'Jury' QT where they can talk with fellow members who've died during the 8 player merge. These players will decide the winner.
Cycle with the tweaks will continue until there are 3 players left. Then, we decide the winner.
-Active players post 1 last time, anything they want to say to the Jury in-thread. This is sent to the mod first, and then they post each player's final words in succession.
-Jury members then vote for who they want to win the game. Whoever gets the most votes, wins the game!
And then the game's over.
Some Mechanics in detail:
Private Communication: Players can communicate with other players in their tribe outside the thread by PMing them. They must send PMs to both that player, and the mod (for both bookkeeping and lol moments post-game). Players can talk about whatever they want, but can only talk after during chat sessions.
Voting: Votes will be sent privately to the mod. Once all votes are collected, they will be posted in-thread (not who voted for who, just the total votes). Whoever has the most votes is out of the game (pre-Jury) or wins (post-Jury).
Players that are out of the game: Players are considered 'Dead' when they are voted out during the 2 tribe period. They cannot post in any other thread other than the Spectator QT. Players that die when there are 8 players left, are sent to the Jury QT where they can talk with other Jury members. They cannot talk in thread either.
There is also another mechanic I want to implement that should make this even more like the real game:
Each player that actually plays Survivor on the TV show has actual skills, right? So players here should have some 'skills' too.
Searching Skill: 1/6 chance of finding Hidden Immunity Idol each night(most fans should know what this is)
Whispering Skill: Can send 1 message during no-chat periods.
Spying Skill: Choose a player. You'll overhear one of their conversations and be sent one of the messages they sent during Chat Periods.
Investigative Skill: Choose a player. You'll be told what 'skills' they possess.
etc, etc.
Each team would have 1 of each of the skills. They can claim at the beginning, or choose to keep their skills secret.
Skills thing may or may not work, but I feel it would make the game more interesting.
--
Anyway, just a random idea I had. Wondering if we could implement it/enough interest in it. There would of course need to be 1, 2 or even 3 mods to keep everything under control. But it would be fun, just take a while.
Thanks for taking the time to read this.
Let me know what you guys think!

in without reading anything but the first sentence. one of my favorite shows when i was a kid.

I have been thinking about this same thing. I haven't even read your post but I am a HUGE, like ridiculously huge fan of Survivor. So I'd love to help make this idea happen and would probably be /in.
-
Glad I'm not the only Survivor fanboy. ;D

Potential problems: the challenges should be a bit varied to be fun, which could be a bit tough (some of these could probably be Dominion. Sure, some people are better than others, but the physically strongest people don't always win survivor). There also could be a problem with timing and time zones if the only goal for challenges is time-based.
In Survivor, the players don't know each other at all. Here, we have twin-claims and people already know each other from playing dominion together and other forum games. It could potentially be a big disadvantage for new players.

True. I feel the Timezone and Challenges are going to be the hardest to deal with.
We could spread out player based on Time Zones, so that at least 1 member from each team is online.
Twin-Claiming would be difficult but it hopefully shouldn't be too bad. They just have to make sure they don't even mention the game outside the thread.
Another thing about the threads: Would 2 QTs be needed for each Tribe? Or could theory potentially make 2 threads, only allowing certain members be able to view them.

I think maybe this could be solved by just letting people pm each other and if they want to PM multiple people, they can go for it. And if you want to respond to everyone, just hit "reply all." I don't think multiple QTs would be necessary.
-
True, but I'd rather have players converse with one another in-thread for challenges and the like. So they can see which players are helping the tribe, and which players are hindering it.

Yeah this seems like a good idea, something's gotta be in-thread, right? Although there probably shouldn't be tons and tons of interaction between the two teams. (Just heckling! ;D)

Incoming: subgames of Mafia, Resistance, GoF, etc.
Another challenge suggestion -- The Amazing Race: everyone must record videos of themselves playing QWOP. Best distance wins the challenge.

Not sure how easy it is to follow after the fact but here's a Survivor game done by some mafiascum guys: http://z13.invisionfree.com/Seafoam_Islands/index.php?
I wasn't in that one, but I signed up for a later one that's still ongoing. I probably wouldn't do it again since I'm not a huge fan of the social aspect of how alliances are formed.

WOAH. I don't know how I missed this thread.
I AM A SURVIVOR SUPER FAN. I've never missed an episode.
I've actually applied to be on, like, 5 times or something.
Are you watching the current season? It's really good; very strong cast.
Anyway, the most difficult thing about playing this online--which, by the way, I am totally IN for--is the challenges. I would suggest Dominion games for one thing, obviously. You know, you could implement other online games though. (Like, who can solve a Colourshift puzzle first? Every played Colourshift? It's great: http://www.kongregate.com/games/mrsneeze/colourshift

Why am I not surprised that fellow forum games addicts are Survivor addicts too?
This has gotta happen guys. We have got to get forum Survivor off the ground. I really love the current season too. We should take this discussion somewhere else but which seasons are your favorites? I am not always a huge fan of when they bring people back but I think Heros Vs. Villans was one of the best that I've ever seen. Anyway anyway. Now you've got me addicted to colorshifting too.
Also, get on Survivor. It would be so cool to say that I sorta-kinda know someone on that show! (Actually I'm like 2 degrees of separation from Matt from Redemption Island.)

Was he the long blond haired Christian young guy?
I'm always rooting against the other long blond haired young guys, because I feel like each of them has taken a spot on the show that should have been mine.
This season is oddly good. last season started out okay, but then fizzled when that one girl--Kim, I think--just completely dominated it. I like most of the players they bring back, though on occasion it gets annoying (I don't care for Ozzy, for one thing). Heroes Vs. Villains was the best season hands down, of course. How could it not be? At the time, Russel, Parvati, and Sandra were the best three to ever play the game, and they got to face off! I wanted Parv to win, but you can't argue with Sandra's social game.
As far as the current season goes, just a really strong cast. I really like Penner. Denise and Malcom are instant favorites, it would shock me if they don't come back. Abby is a terrific villain, she's just so insane. And the old actress lady has sort of proven herself.
-
I think I watched season 4 and around there when I was young. So don't obviously know anyone. If I were to try it again now, what season would you recommend? I obviously wouldn't know any of the characters beforehand.
There is a ton of stuff you can do for challenges if you get creative. Could be posting pictures of something irl-y, online games, etc. Mod just basically needs to be awesome. I want to start this soon!!

Just to let you guys know, the first swede who got voted out in the first season of the swedish version committed suicide, so no pressure. ;)

It's continually improved over the years. It's much more of a physical/social/mental competition now, than a reality show.

I actually cried.
Then posted the quote on Facebook, along with the obligatory, "Get off my lawn."
-
Are y'all actually that old? I mean, it was on when I was "a kid" too, but I'm only 24 now, sheesh.
Eevee and I were recently discussing how old we think everyone in Forum Games is, and they we became Facebook friends. Isn't that nice?

I am not playing this game right now! I just assumed everyone was like 25. Eevee is the one with ideas.

Id willingly add most of the people here to facebook, as long as they don't post boring crap about what they had for breakfast or 'Like' stupid chain pictures and stuff! And if they didnt mind the fact that I do tend to comment a lot on other peoples posts and photos...

I'm so old, I don't know what a "Facebook" is. Is it when you get so enraged you smack someone in the face with a book??
...
No but seriously, I don't have a FB account.
-
You... you don't? But how do you... do stuff?
Weird.
-
I no longer feel old! Thanks Galz!
-
Everything Galz has posted in this thread applies to me too.
I'm 34, btw. If the rest of you 20-somethings are feeling "old," does that qualify me as "ancient?"

Im definately not in my 20's and I posted the 'old' comment!
A lot of people you could do some detective work and work out form thier comments, intro, V/LA roughly how old they are I reckon.
Would beinterested hearing Eevees guesses!

I think I've said, somewhere. But I've got more posts on these boards than anyone else, so you would really have to dig.
-
It's always so disorienting when you see someone's face in real life and you realize they look nothing like what you pictured them in your mind.
But I just Facebook-stalked Robz888 and he looks exactly what I pictured him to be.

Robz is what I picture him to look like because I saw the picture in the f.ds members map.

That's because you subliminally remembered seeing his face on the f.DS members map, so already had an image - albeit forgotten - of what he looked like in the back of your mind. ;D

Damn you ninja's!

Holy crap Robz doesn't have a beard!!!

I knew it! Ha. OK. That explains that.

It's actually because I bear a passing resemblance to my avatar, unlike the rest of you probably.
-
I look just like my avatar!!

Also, I assume we are all facebook stalking Robz now right?

Jeez, you might as well friend me or something.

That adds a legitimacy to my stalking that I may not be comfortable with!

I also feel you can tell someones age by the amount of friends....I try to have a soft cap of 100 friends, and a hard cap of around 130. because I like to read stuff about people I actually interact with on a day to day. Oh, unless they are good looking girls, then they get Auto-added of course
-
Also, working backwards form Robz I can now see Eevee!
hi Eevee!
-
I feel like one of the young'uns of the forum games community (though there are at least a couple younger than me) at 20. I usually don't add anyone on facebook who I don't know IRL, but I feel like I know some people on here better than some of my actual FB friends. :o
-
I feel like this thread has derailed and might well deserve its own topic.
-
I would add people, but then people will realise I'm a sad ugly boring person in real life! haha
-
I essentially operate my FB as if I were someone important (I'm not). Everything on it is public and professional. I re-post the stories I write, policy stuff, chat about video games, you know, the important stuff.
I used to write a blog for the TV show Lost, so I had an instant influx of 1,000 friends the day I posted a link to my FB at the end of a blog post. That was 3 years ago, and those people are steadily leaving me (sometimes grumbling as they go, "Write about Lost more, you jerk!").
PPE: Eevee looked exactly the way I pictured him, and I can't explain that.

Isn't that half the girls - and three quarters of the boys - on the interwebs?

A) There are no girls on the internet
and B) Yes, but I am one of the few that admits it!

Well, I don't actually know the 2 people who just friended me, but my vigorous investigative journalism skills tell me: Theory and Ozle, yes?

My social networking policy got a lot easier when it became just about sharing puppy pictures with family (and the occasional good article). I am actually on G+ more than Facebook, shockingly.

Alright, to bring this back on topic:
Seems we have a couple people interested:
Robz
Dsell
Galz (?)
Lekkit
Jimmmmm
Eevee
We'd need at least 16 people willing to play to get this off the ground, plus a comod. Players would have to be able to participate heavily in PMs, challenges, discussion etc.
I have a couple ideas for challenges (they're pretty weak though), but feel free to PM me if you have any ideas for both cooperative and solo challenges. The more options I have to choose from, the better the challenges will be.
What about the 'player skills' idea? Is it worth doing? Or would it be unnecessary?
-
I'd be willing to comod. I can grab some challenge ideas from previous forum survivor games I know about.
-
I know nothing about Survivor.
I think this would be fun because y'all are a fun group of folks. ;D
I am concerned about over-committing to forum games and so by availability will depend on what other games I'm in at the time this is expected to go live.

Good! Just PM me with any ideas you have. I could start a QT to brainstorm if needed.

Of course!
Don't know if this would get off the ground though, there's a lot of interest, but not quite enough.

Still very interested. Also interested in a QT brainstorm. Or just more brainstorming right here.

Brainstorm here, and then send any ideas to me or Axxle.
You won't know if it'll be used or not, but we might, so might as well suggest.

Gah I'm too slow at finding these things. I read the opening post and though wow ill let everyone know me an robz love survivor and are definetly in. Then I come to find not only has he mentioned his love of survivor he's started a Facebook stalking of himself.
-
Also as a suggestion for the games, for a way to simulate different people strengths and weaknesses you could have different types of games, not sure about the team portion but for individual immunity any online game with a postable high score could be used, I saw someone post a link to kongregete as well and many of those games have achievements, first to get the achievement wins, this is viewable in your account profile. Just throwing out ideas.

Necromancing this thread! Come on people, sign up!

Forumpls :)
Maybe some of the newbies to mafia would want to play. We should post a link to this after one of the games. It worked well for your mafia game robz.
-
So...how about this season, eh?
-
We had like 10 people interested so I think we could scrounge out a few more. I think the opening post should be edited to explain more like a mafia game. For those who don't want to read it just seems like we are indefinitely gauging interest.

Still super interested in playing.
-
So...how about this season, eh?
It's really good! I like Malcolm, but for some reason I find myself always rooting against him. Maybe I'm jealous of how cool he is? I don't know. Anyway, his tribal council moves the last two weeks have been awesome.
-
We're shooting for 16 people still, right?
So we need 8 more, assuming everyone signed up still wants to play.

Couldn't we try to do it with less if we simply can't get to 16? A smaller game sounds better than no game!
-
Hello all, I've never played a forum game before, so I'm not sure if this is the best way to start? Anyway, I read the description, and it sounds fun.
-
Have you ever seen the show? It's not a requirement or anything, I'm just curious.
But you're in!

Yeah, I've seen every season--I'll be the obligatory "mom" cast member in a one-piece swimsuit. I'm really enjoying the current season; I'm rooting for Cochran.

Welcome to the Forums! I'm a Survivor diehard fan. This season has been GREAT for the last three weeks, at least. Cochran is great.

Darn, so 3 more people!

maybe in... on what basis does the jury decide who wins? do they just pick whoever they think was best at solving puzzles?

If they want to, sure.
What usually happens is people vote for whoever they feel like deserves to win. If you backstabbed them, you probably won't receive their vote.
-
ahhh. yeah, sure, /in.
-
I'll play this
-
bump!
-
Thanks for bumping this Eevee because…
I'll probably run this during the summer. So signups will close around the beginning of June.
Spectators! Have any cool ideas for some nice minigames? PM me! I already have some ideas and it'd be better to have more choices to choose from.
And for the specialized skills: Yea or Nay?
If you haven't signed up, do it!
-
I've also begun work on a mechanic that deals with the hidden immunity idol that will have it's own sort of mini-mindgame of it's own.
Each player may once during the dayphase of the game (before or after the immunity challenge) go out and look for the immunity idol. Before the night, I'll let them know if they've found it or not. For sake of the example, we'll say their chances of finding it are at 50% and failure at 50%.
Now, for everyother person from the tribe that goes out and looks, the chances of them finding it goes down.
So if Player A and Player B go and look, instead of a 50% chance of them finding it, it's 25% chance each. There would still be a 50% chance of failur for both parties.
However, since there is only one HII per tribe, once it's been found the chance of all future searches drop to a 100% failure until it's returned.
This does need to be tweaked with exact starting percentages for fail/find, how many chances a player gets to search, if they get more chances when the tribes combine, whether to variable the system based on the number of searches conducted previously, etc. I'm open for suggestions, if this even is a system people want to use.
-
No, you should make it like a real search, like Ozle's map challenges
-
Guys, thinking of watching one season of the actual show to get pumped for this, what should I do? I might have asked Robz earlier but I don't remember what he said.

Hmm. Well, the really old, original seasons, are not as good, in my view. So don't start from the beginning if you just want to watch one! The seasons with returning cast members tend to be the best, but some of the fun there is watching people you already know.
Survivor: Phillipines is a recent, mostly standalone season (three returning cast members) that was pretty good.
You could also try Heroes vs. Villains, Fans vs. Favorites I, Fiji, or Samoa.
-
Heroes vs villains is what google suggested, followed by the philippine one. I'm just worried that too much of the appeal of heroes vs villains is knowing said characters from before. (Obv I'll watch all 26 if I like it that much! I really don't know, havent seen a single episode in probably 8 years.)
-
I thought the last season (Fans vs Favs 2) was pretty great, although there were a few lame people and favorites got a lot more airtime early, but it's easy to find it since it's still on cbs.com (assuming that works for you in Finland).
-
Availability isn't an issue for me, the internet's pretty wonderful. If there isn't a clear greatest season amongst the ones with no old characters, I guess I'll start with heroes and villains. I'll do it right away!

Don't give up on that OTHER desert island show, though, in the mean time!

Ooh, that is good! I'll use it. Thanks Robz!
-
I really liked Pearl Islands and Cook Islands. I had an idea about how to do the group challenges--
what if you had a puzzle with a time limit that you gave each individual to play. Then, as a group, each individual score would be added up for the group total. (Could lead to a tie, though)
The losing team would be able to see the results of each player's puzzle. So, if they wanted to vote off the person with the worst score (the "weakest" player) they would be able to compare scores easily.
I thought this would be a more objective way of assessing each players skills, rather than trying to coordinate in a QT....one player could get there first and solve the puzzle and then the rest of the people wouldn't be able to showcase their skills.
Anyway, just a thought...I haven't really thought it through to see all the potential problems.
-
I'm going to need to /out of this game for now. Sorry!

That's totally fine. :) Hope the family emergency gets resolved!

Ok it's updated.
Those are some really cool ideas!

I like cool ideas. And I like survivor. I don't know if there's an \in list for this, but I'd like to be there.
-
Yay!
-
Bump?
-
I don't know if I'll have the time to put it together and run it anymore. :P If we have a ton of people, I'll for sure do it, but not if there is only this few.
-

I could probably run it. I have some good ideas.

Also I want this to happen...

I don't like the idea of a jury QT. I think jury members should not be allowed to talk about the game at all until the final vote, whether to each other or even publicly (especially publicly).
I also don't like the idea of a final 3. Final 2 all the way.
These are just my opinions, though.
-
In "real" survivor the jury gets to hang out together / talk about the game before the vote though, right?
-
Originally in the Survivor rules they were told not to talk about the game. Back when juries respected that I feel that the game was better. It's impossible to enforce now so bitter people have poisoned juries before and created voting blocs that made me unhappy.
It's just my opinion. Perhaps an effort can be made to try and prevent jurors from talking about the game. At least to not encourage them to do it by having a QT that wouldn't be good for anything else.
-
I agree with not being able to talk about the game. I think it would be
More fun as a jury member to get first reactions to others final tribal question/responses when they are done and be just as shocked as the players when they find out who wins.
I disagree with 2 players, I think three created infinitely more alliance choices and alot less potential for the bring the one you can beat strategy, surrounding yourself with two complete losers is tough and you look bad, you gotta figure out how to bring one obvious loser and one good candidate who you can out talk/had less allies.
-
I don't think you should have an in-game mechanic for allowing undetected conversations. I think you should do just the opposite and have a mechanic for detecting conversations.
So you can talk as much as you want with in private with people, but there is a slight chance of your message being overheard by another player. This is in place of talking as much as you want and having it always be detected, but there is a slight chance that your messaging will be private.
-
Added note from what I said in the other thread. I thin the game could really evolve if we took a bit of role playing into it, this also helps because a conversation between two people could just be about their favorite foods or anything else. But peoe would need
To be into the whole let talk because we need to get some
Water and actually just talk.
-
F2 vs F3 has long been an area of disagreement.
Regardless of what actually happens, I'm quite certain that the mods shouldn't tell us which is happening until right before the final immunity challenge, though. ;D
