I don't have much experience from playing role playing games by forum, but I've played table top RPGs for more than 10 years and I'm always willing to play some more. So I was basically checking to see if there are people who are interested in trying out RPGs online, or if there are experieced players who would be interested in GM:ing or playing.
If there would be enough interest, I could see myself GM in almost any setting that I'm familiar with.
Would any interested people prefer to play in an existing system, or is freeforming ok?

Is this like a campaign with a DM and dice rolls, etc.? Or just literal RP in forum, like on an RP-only WOW server?
I'd be interested in the second one, I think. 12 years ago I was part of an online RP chat group on a website that I can't remember and has probably gone under that was a lot of fun. I recall it was called The Vampyre Tavern, but that was just the chat room name.
A forum thread doesn't work as well since it isn't quite live, though.

Wikipedia rocks. The site was sixdegrees.com, I am pretty sure.

I've never really understood why the two needs to be exclusive. Why can't there be a campaign with characters that aren't just "stats on a paper"?
-
Wait, people are not doing this already?
I'm always in character on these forums!
-
I would argue that the game system is less important than the world itself.
Hell, you could get a pretty good RP game with one person keeping track of all stats and rolls and the players simply knowing that "Bruno has exceptional strength and is generally likable, but he's not the sharpest stick in the bundle. In his spare time, he likes to…"
Although, having a system in place can allow players to crunch the numbers, which may or may not be a good thing, depending on your philosophy.
-
Yeah. I prefer non-number crunching, but that's me. And I know there are others who think it's a fundamental part of role playing.

Dice are the best. Dice and character stories, the only reason to play tabletop RPGs.

Would it be in a format I could pop in and out of? I enjoy it, but I don't think I'd have time to actually do it.

You awaken in a dimly lit room. There is a window, but it is night time. You can hear the wind tearing at tree leaves. There is a writing desk nearby.
> look at desk
It is an old oak desk. There is a piece of parchment on the table, just barely illuminated by a single flickering candlestick.
> read letter
The scrawl is difficult to interpret in the dim light. You notice the words hidden teasure, murder, and inheritance, but the rest is a blur. Perhaps it will be easier to read in the morning light.
> take letter
You carefully fold up the letter and put it in your pocket.
> take candlestick
You carefully pick up the candle and put it in your pocket. Your pants catch on fire!
> remove pants
You try to take off your pants, but the fire has already engulfed your body. You collapse from the pain. Soon after, you die.
Game Over.
Would you like to play again?

Why were you sleeping in the dimly lit room to begin with? We should follow this backwards and see where it goes....

Forum text adventure. HELLS. YES.
Who else here is familiar with text adventures? Who would like to join in as a mad chorus of peeps playing a text adventure via hivemind? One person runs the adventure, posts descriptions etc. of the situation, and everyone else chimes in with proposed commands. In an update, all the proposed commands are run. Folks who propose commands that solve puzzles/advance the story get points.
I tried this on another forum but I picked a bad choice of adventure - something too big, too sprawling, that new players had difficulty following. I would absolutely LOVE to try this again here. With the community we've got, I think it'd be a blast.
I don't want to hijack this thread, so if people read this and are interested, please shoot me a PM. If I get enough (say, 5 or so) I'll open a thread.

It's like playing Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy via text adventure all over again!

I'm surprised at the lack of grue here. I guess the burning pants help.
I think a light-hearted text adventure game where someone makes things up as you go along (or actually takes the time to write out a script) could be fun. But that would deserve its own thread, methinks.
For forum RPGs, it'd have to be something where someone can convey a lot in one post. It would suck waiting for two (or more!) people to finish up a conversation.
-
I'd give it a go.

Grujah! I was just thinking about you last night and wondering where my forums drinking buddy had gone! Good to see you back around.

You've been thinking about me? :o Sorry, I don't swing that way. :-[

What can I say? It was the beer taking.
It's not as much fun to do drunk AMA's without you around.

(I think Apocalypse World (http://apocalypse-world.com/backpitch.html) would work particularly well in play-by-post format. I'd be willing to run.)
-
okay maybe an rpg with sex moves isn't the best choice for public play.
-
I would so play/GM/co-GM anything post-apocalyptic.
-
/in for mostly anything.
