Title: What's your username mean
Post by: GendoIkari on October 26, 2012, 03:40:58 pm
So curious... what's your username mean? Some of them are somewhat obvious, but there's a lot I'm curious about!

For those who don't know, mine comes from a Japanese anime, Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Mine is a random fantasy-sounding name I used for a D&D character way back, then transferred the name to a WOW character and have been using since then.

Like Kirian, I had my fill of D&D. Kuildeous was a fantasy-sounding name.

I used to go by Kuildeous Irkus and then made up this elaborate back story to anyone who asked that Kuildeous was Latin for pestilent while Irkus was Latin for noisome. So, my name was translated from, "Annoying Asshole."

Interestingly enough, that line got the ladies. Well, not all of them. Not even most of them. Okay, maybe a handful of women gave me pity laughs at parties.

Nick Young is the most baller basketball player to ever grace the earth. It's been said that some scientists study cloning solely to create more Nick Youngs [citation needed]. He played on the Washington Wizards until last season. I am a Washingtonian.

My name's not Nick, and I am not particularly young.

Ozle: Pronouced as Ooo-Zel

When I were a wee child back on the shores of Tuvalu we were a very poor family, poor than even the average standard of living amongst the hut people of Lolua island province.

Some days, instead of going to school my mother used to send me and my poor sister down to the beach to hunt Boggis's. they were a tricky animal to catch, being part way between a crab and a rabbit. So they move sideways but in a sort of hopping motion, and you had to watch out for thier claws. As they jumped along the beach they let out a cheery cry, a bit like the Oooooh before the Aaaahh when you are watching fireworks.

Because of the claws and and the hopping many a Tuvaluan lost thier fingers to a Boggis, and that was thier weaving days over (There were pretty much only two industries on Lolua, weaving and collecting Guano...and let me tell you, the Guano wasnt anybodies first choice!)

So the best way to catch them was a cunning trap made of large coconut shells, vine, a pile of thorny leaves and the rest. I imagine you can visualise it so no need to go into detail. But as the Boggis would come along, jump onto the thorny leaves and spring faster in the air than it could control. There it banged its head on the hollowed out coconut, which came down on top of it, trapping it for the canny hunter to collect at lesuire

BUT WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH YOUR NAME? I hear you, i hear you.
Well, as the Boggis hit the top of the coconut it used to spin round a bit, making the same sort of noise if you put a metal ball in a cup and swirl it round. This came out as a zzzzzzzzzzzlllllllll

So it is in homage to those days, and my poor sister that I put the noise you used to hear while hunting Boggis's to my name as memory of those better days

Ooooooooozzzzzzzzllllll

I used to play Warhammer back in the day. Skaven was the coolest around, so I played those. I met some friends who had ideas for a campaign where you'd create a character that was basically based on you. So we had a super nerfed vampire fledgeling named after one of my friends, a super nerfed skaven engineer based on me and a super buffed High Elf mage who took on armies himself based on the guy who modded the campaign. Now, my name is Kettil, which doesn't sound very skaven-like, so I messed around with the letters, changed the two t's to to k's and Lekkit was born. I've been using the name ever since, and I haven't met anyone who has contested the name.

I used to read a lot and I came upon a bit of writing about bullfighting.  En querencia is a Spanish spanish term (like from Spain and not Mexico) that refers to what a bull does during a bullfight when he figures out that he is going to die.  He finds a spot in the ring and tries to force the bullfighter to approach him, rather than charging at him and getting danced around.

But querencia also refers to a place of comfort or homey-ness in general and might be Mexican as well as Spanish... I'm not a native spanish speaker, and don't really speak that much, aside from words and phrases typically used in a kitchen. I work in a kitchen.

I started using it when I played online games in college because I thought at the time that it meant strictly "in defense," but as I came to understand the phrase better, and as I started liking the way it sounded, I used it for other things.  But still pretty much strictly in the gaming world, and not on the internet at large.

Mine is basically my name, which is Robby. My little brother (well, he's 20) always called me Robs, but the "z" gives me more credibility on the streets. The "8s" are the truly neat part, though; my birth date is 8-8-88.

I blogged under "Robz888" on a fan site for the TV show "Lost." (The wesbite was darkufo.blogspot.com, and has become an excellent general TV forum called SpoilerTV.) Eventually, this just became my nickname for forums in general.

Nice thread, by the way!

I just saw a bunch of vowels and pronounced it like schn+ow. As in ouch. And now that I look back at it that pronunciation just makes no sense whatsoever. XD

Mine is a mashup of my first and last names, and a nickname that a friend gave me in high school. Sometimes I'll go by Diesel instead. I think I tried that on isotropic but the name was already taken. :'(

My name's not Nick, and I am not particularly young.

I had a hunch that it's got something to do with Nick Young. I'm a Clippers fan and his swagness helped in the playoffs last season!

My nickname was originally called penguin35, because when I joined a forum almost a decade ago I would think that "Penguin" was taken, and my favorite number is 35, so I combined both (and a stupid reason on thinking there would be 34 other penguins before me in that forum). I had an unnatural affinity to penguins.

Few years have passed and that forum moved to another system so I got a chance to change my nickname. I changed it to "PenPen" because it's easier to remember, mostly. That had nothing to do with the Eva anime though - most people asked if I was referring to that but I nicknamed PenPen prior to knowing about that particular penguin.

It is a neat date. We chose our wedding date (8-8-80) specifically so that 8-8-88 would be our 8th anniversary.

Back in high school, I wanted to sound as dramatic as I could - best I could manage was in_dubio. That stuck for years, until it started to annoy me. I started using Dub in local video games, but that was either too short or taken on any forum. So Dub became DubDub.

etc.

(and a stupid reason on thinking there would be 34 other penguins before me in that forum).

When I was a wee lad getting my first AIM account, I literally thought that anyone who had a number after their username was chronologically the Xth person to have that name. So if you were "SportsFan335" that meant there were exactly 334 SportsFans before you.  At some point I realized that people chose the numbers for other reasons.

Mine is boring - just first name and middle and last initials.

I recently joined chess.com, and wanted a new, more interesting name but couldn't think of anything. I'm a CS student, an in my PLs course we talk about semantics a lot, and in thinking about how I was unable to come up with an interesting name that meant something, it came to me: semanticVacancy. That'll probably be my name on goko when I eventually decide to get set up over there.

For those of you wondering (and hoping)...this was no actually the reason I am "Brando Commando." But somebody asked me this once and I thought it was better than the truth, which is that "Commando" rhymes with "Brando" and that's all there is to it.

I'm listening to GOT on audio, so I haven't seen any names in print, and the Stark part never registered. She's my favorite remaining character.  However, I just finished book 2 yesterday, and I'm kind of bummed at the latest developments.  Seems like all the good guys are losing, and the bad guys are winning.

I don't even want to read the spoiler, cause it's too short to be "winter's coming".

Seriously though: Is it worth continuing?  I wouldn't have any trouble letting it go.  It moves a little slow, and my GF has already explained that in book 4, he diverts to updating the reader on only half the characters.  You have to get to book 5 to see what's going on with the other half of the folks you may be interested in.  And 6 hasn't even been finished.

I say go for it. I skipped the first two books on the assurances from my friends who had both seen the show and read the books that it was redundant to do both.  I burned through Book 3 really quickly...in only a few weeks, which is not much for a 1100-pager. Very mild spoiler about whether you should continue: I would say, though, that if you don't find seeing things from Jaime, Cersei, or Tyrion's perspective interesting -- if you only like the Starks -- then yeah it gets pretty bad.

It is very much worth it. It is a fantastic series. It's just not very feel good. Ever. GMMR could have called it 'It gets worse: the series.'

I think as you read also, your opinions of certain characters will change and you'll grow to like them. Pretty much any character, when you get to read their POV, you'll grow to like, with a couple of exceptions. And then once you get to like them, they die.

Very mild spoiler about whether you should continue: I would say, though, that if you don't find seeing things from Jaime, Cersei, or Tyrion's perspective interesting -- if you only like the Starks -- then yeah it gets pretty bad.

One of my favorite parts about the series is how characters that I did not like became characters I liked.

Also, are you kidding?  It's absolutely worth it, if only because Book 3 is easily the best book of the series so far.

I'd rank them as:

3 > 1 > 5 > 2 > 4

3>4>2>5>1 for me so far. But I am only halfway through book 5, fyi.

1 was the best, awesome ending that nobody saw coming.

And if you dont like the bad guys winning, Game of Thronesmay not be the book for you, essentially there are no 'bad guys', well, in effect there are actually very very few 'good guys'

Thats part of the reason its so brilliant

Nah, he just kills all the good guys off by the end of the first book.

I stopped reading shortly after that.  I assume the last half of the last book is going to have no characters, just descriptions of scenery and uneaten meals.

I think it's a big mistake to look at GoT as Good vs Evil.

I mean, there's a history lesson there, the "good" ones are just the ones who survive and get to tell history through their eyes.
Look at it from the Lannister's perspective: You're just chilling in your castle, minding your own business, raising taxes, raping women, beating slaves, killing insubordinates and there comes Stannis crashing your party. How mean!

Though I still like 4 pretty much, big gap between that and 5.
2 mostly because it has the Theon coming back home scene, which I love so, so, so much.

I'll pipe in because I just finished book 5 last night.

What is irking me in these later books is sloppiness. The early books were very well written and very well edited. But these later ones seem to have been put out in a rush. Typos, misspellings... I counted at least 5 times where it said "Sir" instead of "Ser." If you are going to change something so basic like that it had better be consistent throughout the whole book! Now I imagine his publisher is to blame more than Martin for rushing what is a huge book and incredible storyline...

The other thing that is driving me crazy is the deviation Martin took from focusing on ~9 characters and telling just their story. I loved that in the first few. But now there are minor characters who get a chapter a piece to tell their side. And frankly, I just don't care about them... I realize that as characters die off, Martin needs to replace them so he isn't just telling the story about ~5 characters. But I would rather him pick a few and just focus on them. Because now I have been reading about these characters that I just dont' care about. And when I don't care about a character, I stop reading and when I stop reading I don't buy book 6! But I probably will buy book 6 because enough characters I do care about are still alive and kicking (barely!)

Every time I sign up for something on the internet I debate whether to use my real name. I go back and forth on whether anonymity on the internet is a good thing. And then if you don't use your name, picking a username is such a difficult choice....

In any case, on Isotropic, Goko, and on this forum I am going by Polk5440 (pronounced "Polk fifty-four forty" or "Polk" for short). This is a reference to the last strong pre-Civil War American President James K. Polk and his slogan "54'40" or fight" (his slogan for trying to stake claim to the Oregon Country for US expansion). Polk strongly supported US expansion and as President-elect presided over the annexation of Texas. As President he acquired part of the Oregon Country (settling for the 49th parallel rather than the 54th) and won the Mexican-American War which resulted in acquiring most of the rest of the western states. I like using this name when playing games of conquest -- it seems very fitting. And since Dominion is loosely thematically about having the most territory, I play under it here.  Also, like others have mentioned, when I first got on the internet, I was under the impression numbers were required in usernames, so they seem normal to me now.

Related is the Avatar. The painting Napoleon Crossing the Alps by Jean-Louis David is related in theme to my username and is a painting I like a lot. The fact that it is used as the Tactician image on Iso is really cool, and as Tactician is one of my favorite cards, made it an easy pick.

My initials are CM, and long ago I wanted a fake name to use for emails and chose "Confusing Manifestation" because that's the kind of kid I was. Of course, eventually I tired of typing that whole thing out, and for whatever reason didn't want to go back to the intials, so I used the first three letters of each word and was surprised at how well that worked.

I can't believe I missed posting in this when it was first, well, posted.

"werothegreat" is just a username I use for everything.  It started when I played the original StarCraft, and just spammed across the keyboard, calling myself Qwertyuiop Mytrio, for no real reason.  That then got shortened to Wero the Great One when I played Age of Wonders, and that got shortened to werothegreat I think when I joined BlizzForums.  I think they may have had a character limit.

Some nickname for me in school was "hippophanes". When I had to make up a user name in a unixoid system, it was restricted to 8 characters. That was 20 years ago. Nothing to do with Hippophae rhamnoides. Oh, and the avatar on the left is a cartoon character that I wish had been around when I was a kid.

Yeah, 3*37=111, that's kinda sweet. Did you play in a high-level team? Because lower-league football teams do not tend to have such large teams.

I'm studying Information Science and design video game concepts in my spare time (for myself - i never really programmed on one until just recently) and one character from one of those game concepts has the name i use. "Per aspera ad astram" is where it comes from. He's not my favourite character of all times, but my favourite character is female, so it would be a bit strange to use her name instead... My avatar is also actually based on artwork for that game Asper came from.

37 is also prime! And the numbers 3 and 7 are cool on their own, too.
I was on a travel team during my middle/high school years, the town I played for had 3 different teams, and for some reason they all shared one set of jersey numbers. I guess that's either just how the jerseys were ordered, or in case a player had to change teams.

I enjoy magic (in games and theatre) and condiments (in all foods). And it's not a name i see very often if at all.

If you aren't familiar with Kingdom of Loathing, you should check it out. I think your username will fit in just fine over there.

I had no idea people other than my 7th grade friends played this game. I mean I know it was an online game with tons of users, but for somereason I really can't wrap my head around the fact they were real people. Also that is what my username comes from, I explained it in my introduction post, it was really just something I made up for that game.

My AIM name was redsun5656 before I played that game. I actually really still like that and may use it sometime. I like repetitive doubles I guess...
