Title: The Godfather
Post by: Captain_Frisk on October 18, 2012, 01:02:09 pm
I have just learned that our beloved administrator has never seen this movie.  Use the space below to tell him how quickly he should correct this oversight.  Worse than opening Sab + Estate on a 5/2 split when Gov / Chapel is on the board?

I saw it about a year ago.  I was on a "movies I've never seen but really should have" binge.  It was alright, nothing super special.  The best thing to come of that binge was Schindler's List, which is the best movie ever.  Has theory seen that?

I mean surely you'd love a movie about a mafia family, why wouldn't you?

It's weird, I love movies, go to the cinema at least couple of times a week, yet there are masses of classics Ihave not seen

North by Northwest is currently sitting on the side, still wrapped

I once made an effort to watch the classics that are in the IMDb top 250, but I didn't get very far.

I did watch the entire Seven Samurai DVD though which has a 15 minute intermission branded into the movie.
There should be an achievement for that.

I mean, yes, please do see The Godfather, but also, Part II is phenomenal. Part III...ummm...yeah.

I have also failed on alot of the top classics.  Once you get pre 1970 or so, i have problems.  Tried to watch Citizen Kane twice and failed.

I have seen and rated ~1000 movies on imdb including many of the Top 250, but I haven't seen The Godfather either... yet.
But also haven't seen any James Bond movie (although I recently started watching the first two), Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter...

I really dislike mainstream movies, but I have problems with art movies too. Try watching Stalker without falling asleep. It's an interesting movie, but I can't get the hype. The same goes for 8 1/2 or Persona.

Citizen Kane on the other hand, CF, is IMO a great movie.

Yes. I think it helps if you recognize that a lot of Citizen Kane is good not because of the plot but just because it's "visually inventive," which is admittedly kind of a wonky reason to like a movie, but still.

I can see why you wouldn't like 8 1/2, though. I enjoy it but more as a film geek kind of person than for the reason I love, say, The Godfather.

QVist - I'd love to hear your recommendations then for movies that aren't too Arty but are sufficiently interesting to be outside the "mainstream".  I'm assuming something like "Lost In Translation" would be in your sweet spot?  Pi? Minus Man?  Drive?

The Godfather is popular - but I'd argue that its because its great, not because its mass market.

I've got 8 1/2 in my netflix queue, but I can never bring myself to press play.

As for the Bond films - I'd say:

Watch Dr. No, and if you enjoy it - watch the rest of the Connery films.

Most of the rest can be skipped if you didn't like Dr. No.

Goldeneye is the only Pierce Prosnan one worth watching.

Casino Royale (Daniel Craig) is excellent.  The otherone wasn't as good, but that's not going to stop me from watching skyfall.

Another one who's never seen Godfather.  And I really can't remember the last time I had time to watch a movie when I wasn't on vacation (and therefore had little interest in watching movies).

I wouldn't recommend it if you're not really motivated. Maybe this is my contrarian streak, but I don't think forcing yourself to see movies is worthwhile unless you are actively planning to become a cinephile. I think really getting into an art -- or many hobbies -- is like learning a language: Dabbling is kind of vaguely unsatisfying. For me, at least.

I dislike "Lost In Translation". That's another movie I just don't seem to understand. For me it's just simply boring to me. I even tried it twice. The second time wasn't better. Pi is good, like you can see in the linked post. I don't know Minus Man and Drive is on my Watchlist, so I can't say anything about it either.
Generally speaking I'm a fan of Film Noir and Neo Noir. I like the mood and characters in those movies. Regarding Neo Noir:
Shutter Island, Memento, 12 Monkeys, Children of Men, The Usual Suspects or to name a few less known ones: Following, The Machinist, Brick, The Salton Sea

I've seen all of these save the Salton Sea.  If I could go back in time and pass on Brick I would.  Did you see Looper?    Shutter Island was interesting, but not on the same level as Memento + 12 Monkeys.

Regarding Drive:
Don't let the trailers fool you.  This is not an action movie.  I saw it in the suburbs, and the bro's in attendance were a little confused at the end.

I saw Looper. Very mediocre in my opinion. Way, way overhyped. The premise was interesting, but the plot was weirdly structured, becoming oddly predictable and rather slow about a third of the way in. None of the characters were very compelling, except the kid, who was played by arguably the best young child actor I have ever seen--his performance was eerily good. I give it a C, overall.

But that's just marketing lying to you.  Hey guys: it has bruce willis, and time travel!

If you did your research first, it was clear that it wasn't going to be the action extravaganza that it was hyped to be.  I had seen Brick (his other movie) - and while I was skeptical - I couldn't resist going.

I agree. The time travel pretty much was willfully nuts. But that scene with the kid falling down the stairs? That was brilliant.

A movie can work really well on one dimension while really failing on another. As a blockbuster, this movie was terrible, but as a kind of off movie about time travel it had a lot going for it.

What do you mean with "pass on"? So, you liked Brick or not? I'm not sure if I understand the term. My wife And I really want to see Looper, it started two weeks ago here in Germany. I agree with you on Shutter Island. I rated Memento and 12 Monkeys with 10/10 and Shutter Island with 8/10. I liked the mood and the story. Sometimes it felt a little bit too "forced arty" (if you know what I mean).

Other less-well known arty movies I like: Swimming Pool, Kafka and Paris, Texas
Regarding Time Travel (may contain spoilers): Terminator 2, Donnie Darko, 12 Monkeys, Groundhog Day, Butterfly Effect, Contact, Frequency, Time Bandits and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time

I also found Shutter Island extremely boring, and gave up about 1/3 through, before I had enough data to label it stupid.
12 Monkeys, what I recall of it, was so mediocre that I can't recall much of it.
Lost in Translation (and for that matter, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou) I just didn't get.  I guess I was expecting something as good as Rushmore, and it fell woefully short.

The Godfather needs to be seen if for no other reason than just the spectacle of it, like Apocalypse Now. It also should be seen if you are NOT a Marlon Brando fan.

I think my favorite time travel movie in terms of avoiding weird wonky paradox crap is Millennium. I remember the premise more than the actual movie, so I don't remember if it was a good movie, but I do remember that it handled time travel fairly decently.

But yeah, most time travel stories are crap. Even Terminator's time travel was crap. It doesn't stop it from being a great movie. It's just another one of those where you have to ignore the prodding questions about time travel. I was able to accept Looper by not focusing on the time travel.

Getting back on topic, I did watch the Godfather back in college. I should probably rewatch it, as I've forgotten so much. I never did see the sequels, though. I should remedy that.

Everyone needs to see The Godfather and The Godfather Part II. I think Part II is the greatest film I've ever seen, but it took me a few viewings to appreciate it more than the first.

On the time travel topic, I love Primer. As a very low budget independent film produced by people who are not filmmakers, it doesn't really have the best film production values, but it doesn't need to. The plot is definitely the best time travel plot I've seen, and I love how crazy stuff gets in the final act (http://xkcd.com/657/).

Godfather was great to watch as a child when I had a 5hour long attention span.
FREDO. I KNOW IT WAS YOU. *kiss of death

Subtle and prolonged character development can make a great movie, or lose a modern audience completely.

Citizen Kane on the other hand, CF, is IMO a great movie.

Yes. I think it helps if you recognize that a lot of Citizen Kane is good not because of the plot but just because it's "visually inventive," which is admittedly kind of a wonky reason to like a movie, but still.

I've read that this is the same reason why the Mona Lisa is so great. There's nothing particularly unique about it now, but the use of architectural background, framing the subject from the waist up, the balance of proportions, the natural posture, and the unique facial expression, meant that the Mona Lisa was the first to have it all (that got recognized), and, like Citizen Kane, benefitted from being made by someone with a high profile.  Now so much derives from it that it no longer looks so special, but it was landmark at the time.

I weep for the day in which All Along the Watchtower is no longer a great song.

I guess you're saying the same happened to Citizen Kane? I would recommend Kane not for its historic value in developing new techniques but because it's just a great movie, period, and holds up even now. To be honest, I think most movies are not visually inventive enough, but Kane is pretty relentless in coming up with interesting ways to show things. And then, on top of that, it's compelling both sociologically (it's partly about wealth and individualism in America) and psychologically (it's about one man's private unhappiness and obsession).
