Title: King's Court nerf/fix
Post by: NoMoreFun on October 06, 2012, 03:17:13 am
King's Court
Cost: 7
You may choose an Action card from your hand other than a King's Court. Play it three times.

You may even be able to knock the cost down.

It's still an amazing card, but it's not as ridiculous any more.

You want me to have NoMoreFun with my King's Courts, don't you?  :'(

Seriously though, I know that a lot of people have a problem with KC for being OP and impossible to pass up too often, and while that may be true, I think KC is kind of a hallmark Dominion card. Possession could be a good comparison. A lot of people might hate it, but it's a classic Dominion effect. On the subject, though, I love KC chains because I simply find them fun and really satisfying to pull off correctly. Having KC not work on itself seems like a case where too much effort towards balancing the card perfectly can actually get in the way of what makes it so fun.

I would like a "repeater" better than looked at cost than one that mentions a specific card. Like:

Prince's Court
Cost: 6
You may choose an Action card from your hand costing less than $6 and play it three times.

(It could be used successfully with itself if there are price-changing cards around.)
Or even a differential effect like

Prince's Court
Cost: 6
You may choose an Action card from your hand and play it.
If that card costs less than $6, play it again.
If that card costs less than $5, play it once more.
If that card costs less than $4, play it once more.

Would this play cards that cost less than $4 four times? Because that seems quite strong considering the number of terminal silvers at $3. Prince's Court + Woodcutter = guaranteed province seems quite strong.

Maybe it is. Maybe the differential version is better with "less than $3" for the final clause, or doesn't work at all. Nothing is tested at all of course. I just think that if you want t "KC" that doesn't make big megaturns so often it's more interesting to limit it by cost than by name.

I agree! Yeah, taking off the "Less than $4" line might make Prince's Court more balanced. I still don't like it as much as KC though. :P

I like the nerf, because it makes the card less variant.  Worth the drawbacks of changing it to me.  Still a great 7$ card.

Aesthetically the form where you say "costing less than 6$" is better.  I'm really not excited about KC alchemy anyway.

For that matter, what's to stop you from playing PC-PC-B-B-B and arguing that as each Bridge resolves it reduces the cost of the cards in the combo to the point where they all get played a full three/four times? Based on how other cards react to having something happen half-way through their resolution, I think that would be how it works.
