Title: FAQ Feedback
Post by: Jorbles on March 19, 2012, 05:52:27 pm
Should add something along the lines of "I/my friend discovered that if you just buy money you'll win all the time" and link it to this (http://dominionstrategy.com/big-money/). I know it's covered in the Dominion Lingo dictionary, but it does seem to crop up often enough as a separate thread.

Should have something linking to some of the many threads that are some variation of 'which expansion should I buy next?'

thanks for the input guys. good call jorbles, i added that.  WW, i wasn't able to find too many threads in a quick search, but i linked what i found.  there might be more but the threads are probably pretty short.

Also, can you format this better? Right now it looks like a mess of links aka "ughhh I have to study?!? FOR A GAME?!??! And it doesn't even look like fun studying..." is what many people will say looking at this.

edit: By this I mean size changes to the section titles, bolding/underlining them, etc.

thanks for the input. i'll work on cleaning up the formatting.  it will probably come in chunks, i technically do have a job i'm supposed to be doing.

Dominion Tournaments

 • USA Finals - July 2012 - Chicago, Illinois

Jay sent the qualifiers an e-mail confirming that this will be held on July 14, 2012.

i haven't heard much information about qualifiers recently.  if anyone has any more info (on anything, really) let me know and i will add it in here.

There was a Regional Qualifier held at KublaCon in San Francisco this past weekend.  http://kublacon.com
There was originally some confusion as to whether the winner would be sponsored directly to GenCon.  I believe the latest word was just to the U.S. Nationals in Chicago in July.

thanks for the info! as i understand it only the winner of the US tournament will be sponsored, not all competitors.  though of course things could have changed.  there hasn't been a lot of available information on the tournament at large.

I'm a bit sad there's no mention of the simulators. I believe they've been a big contribution to the strategic knowledge we have today.

well, i do briefly mention them, but it is not really a proper mention.

Popular Forum Threads
Dominion Play, Ethics, and Conventions
 • Is Consulting a Simulator Cheating? (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=1174.0) - A discussion on whether or not consulting a dominion simulator (Geronimoo's (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=144.0) or rspeer's (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=619.0)) before or during an isotropic game is cheating. Discussion extends to whether reading strategy articles or consulting a list of the best/worst openings (http://councilroom.com/openings?card=All+cards) is appropriate.

i will gladly make a more detailed mention of the simulators though. just let me know where they might fit best and what you would like included!  perhaps a subsection in the first post?  a dedicated new post?  it can be a little tricky for me to overhaul the formatting in this without cleaning out some of suggestion posts in this thread.

The problem with including the simulators is, well, questions about them aren't frequently asked. Maybe they SHOULD be, but they aren't.

The boardgaming subreddit picked me as their "Meeple of the Week".  Feel free to add the link (http://www.reddit.com/r/boardgames/comments/vc422/meeple_of_the_week_clownfundamentals/) to the Reddit links already in the FAQ :)

I talk about DS / TS a little bit, mostly about how awesome this community is!

Hey, decided to come back and see how well this worked or didn't work. You did a very good job. The slightest adjustment I would make is to underline the big categorizing words like

RESOURCES

instead
RESOURCES
and you can try making it bold too if you didn't already.

Basically, I approve. 5/5 :P

edit: Also, how come some users have YouTube links but some don't?

/

hey, haven't seen you around these parts in a while. thanks for the feedback! this FAQ has grown a bit since i put it together, and some of the early feedback was super helpful in doing that.

edit: Also, how come some users have YouTube links but some don't?
laziness mostly?  i haven't updated that portion of the text in a while. i think a few others have created youtube channels since i made that addition.

The slightest adjustment I would make is to underline the big categorizing words like

RESOURCES

RESOURCES
and you can try making it bold too if you didn't already.

i messed around with a few formats early on, including underlining sections.  i found it hard to balance creating clear delineations while also keeping the format simple and easy on the eyes.  i am totally open for these suggestions and might change it later, but for now i am going to leave it as is.

the reason for that is that i think i might have to overhaul the whole FAQ in the coming week or two anyway.  between dark ages being released and the Goko/Funsockets online implementation coming out a whole lot of the FAQ should probably be reformatted.  while i would like to keep it around, a lot of the information and questions related to Isotropic will not need as prominent a place.  in line with that, i am sure that a host of G/F questions will pop up in the coming weeks.

while i'm at it i want to add in some other stuff too:
- detailed listing of all online tournaments, past, present, and future. links to rules, results, forum discussion, etc.
- a comprehensive listing of all IRL tournaments, especially those related to the World Masters tournament, with relevant links to forum threads
- more info on the simulators, and ideally a few tables showing win rates or turns to hit 4 provinces for common things like terminal draw BM

i'd like to keep the same basic formatting though, as i think it is useful to be able to link people to a post which specifically addresses their need instead of a single giant wall of text.  but to keep with this formatting i will probably need to split up some posts or add a few more. which, it would be nice if theory could hook me up with mod powers for this thread to take care of all that.

Well good luck! I understand your reasoning for all of that, although if there is one (been gone too long to find out if there is) link to a place comparing/contrasting funsockets and isotropic then that would be good to link at one point. Or make yourself and then link o.O
Title: Re: FAQ Feedback
Post by: greatexpectations on August 15, 2012, 11:27:15 am
ok guys, with the impending release of Funsockets/Goko and Dark Ages it seemed time to give the FAQ (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=1994.0) a bit of an overhaul.

i split the original into a FAQ and this feedback thread. that way you guys can still propose things you want to see included without cluttering the FAQ.  hopefully having a shorter more organized thread will make it easier for folks to flip through.  i am also going to seek to make posts shorter so that you can link to specific details as well as avoiding the dreaded walls of texts.

as always, if you have any comments or things you'd like to see throw em at me.

It would be great if you had a section where you explicitly mention the names and roles of important Dominion people, like Donald X., Dougz, and Jay. Right now the FAQ makes it sort of a guessing game for newbs. :) You should also mention those behind dominionstrategy.com (theory and rrneud (sp?) made the site, right? not sure without re-checking) and maybe even some of the best Dominion players (those who've topped the Iso leaderboard at one time or another, like Stef, Marin, Obi, WW...), but maybe is the key word here, because that could get messy or just plain unnecessary. Might be nice to have some Iso history in the FAQ though... I don't know.

hey, good call.  i will work on adding a list of important names to this (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=1994.msg31548#msg31548) section of the FAQ. you can expect it in a few minutes.

that was the intent for this (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=1994.msg87213#msg87213) section of the FAQ.  when i reformatted it all i mostly just copied and pasted the old FAQ stuff in there.  i am hoping to reformat that post and add more in there soon.

Also instead of writing
Quote
[ url=youlinkhere]yourtexthere. Simply remove the space before 'url' and swap in the appropriate link and text.
and alike, you could probably write

Code: [Select]
yourtexthere

Edit: As long as your tag isn't
Code: [Select]
done. the code quoting gave me some trouble with the bullet formatting but this works better than leaving a space.

and apologies for the edit. i didn't touch anything, totally accidental. thought i was in 'quote' so i could steal your quote formatting but i was in modify. my bad. stupid mod powers.

new FAQ post up here (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=1994.msg98691#msg98691). it's basically a listing of strategy articles to help transition a player from beginner to expert.

i was inspired by this (http://www.reddit.com/r/dominion/comments/yr3ol/whats_the_best_way_to_improve_at_dominion/) reddit thread and i stole a couple of things from the New To Dominion? (http://dominionstrategy.com/new-to-dominion/) post over on the blog.

any glaring omissions from the list? ideas for better organization? think an article belongs in a different category?

Very nice, but theory's article on +Card/+Action engines is out of date - at this point, both Embassy and Hunting Grounds also give greater than +3 Cards, and Cultist is another +2 Cards Attack that you don't want to ignore.

do you mean to say that it shouldn't be included in the list?  i think it covers the fundamentals of a the basic village/smithy sort of engine pretty well. and if we start nitpicking too much then just about every strategy article out there is outdated because of dark ages and guilds.

a couple of recent FAQ additions/edits:
 • added a couple of names to the Who's Who? (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=1994.msg31548#msg31548) section.
 • moved Isodom 5 and the BGG Store tournament out of the current tournaments section. updated the listing of past online tournaments (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=1994.msg87199#msg87199) so it is pretty comprehensive now. formats, dates, winners, and links to all relevant threads.
 • added images, video links, and a link to the leaderboard archives to the Isotropic (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=1994.msg87213#msg87213) section.

Note that IsoDom 5 isn't completely over; there will be three winners in three brackets.

unless anyone objects i think i am just going to start editing the FAQ so that it all links to the wiki. the wiki serves the purpose better, and keeping up with editing both is a bit much.
