Title: Dominant Species
Post by: Dsell on July 27, 2012, 02:46:46 am
I stumbled upon this game recently and have been highly impressed that TONS of its positive reviews on Amazon and BGG say it is basically the best board game ever made, that years of playtesting really shows in the balance and interconnectivity of this game. So I am thinking I will probably order it, but I am curious if anyone else here has tried it and what your thoughts are on it? Is it actually the transcendent board game experience it's cracked up to be?

As a side question if you have a lot of experience with it, is the 3rd edition of the game with new art and components worth the extra money or should I just buy a used 2nd edition?

I don't think its this god of games, but its fun.  If any of your group suffers from AP the game will be much longer though because of the wotker placement mechanic.

I sadly will never own it because I have a seriously arachnophobic wife. Although, if there is a way to cover up the spiders during game play, this could be an option.

I've never played it, so I don't even know if I would like it, but I have heard some really positive reviews.

It's a good game but it could easily accumulate dust with the rest of the six player four hour games that never hit the table. If you've got the right group for those sort of games then go for it.

I think I could get 4-6 to play pretty regularly. And I think/hope there won't be too much trouble with AP. The toughest thing will probably be getting them to play this instead of Dominion! ;D

I've played, and it seems like a really good game, but I personally didn't like it. For such a long game there's a lot of luck dependance in the tokens that come out and to a lesser degree, the domination cards, and politics plays a very big factor, both of which make for an experience I didn't really enjoy, despite winning comfortably.

How much would you say luck and politics are involved? I don't mind politics (my favorite game is Cosmic Encounter...) or a bit of luck but if I'm going to be playing for hours I don't want luck to play a large factor in who wins.

Luck doesn't have a lot to do with it, it's majorly politics.  Sometimes you get screwed over by what element's come up, but really you should probably be trying for a low-variance approach in this game since high-variance tends to be ganged up on when you do get ahead.

One thing to watch out for are the dominance cards.  Most players ignore them and then get very mad when someone chooses it and screws them over.  You need to play rounds to prevent yourself from taking most of the damage.

Well, in the game I played, the elements I took early from adaptation never showed up in abundance the following turn(s), while for another player, every element did. They were left with the unpalatable choice of wasting APs to stop depletion (with the minor benefit of abundance, or not, depending on when they got in there), or losing elements to depletion or exhaustion, while I just happily danced ahead.

Politics plays a big element. Almost everything in this game is targeted. And it's very easy to intentionally screw a specific player over, if you choose.

I ordered this game and it's coming tomorrow! :D

I'm thinking it will work pretty well with my college gaming group, who is used to a lot of Dominion. I think we could use a bit of politics. :)

Hey that's really cool! I brought the game to college but we haven't played yet, partially because the game is so long and partially because it requires such a huge amount of space to play. But maybe if I get friends hooked on the app they'll want to play. :))
