There has been some discussion that the name "Herald" does not fit with standard VP card names. I think this requires some more community feedback and another mini poll. If you have more suggestions, please mention them and I will add them as they come. With more potential names submitted, I've allowed the ability to revote.

How about .... Meadow?
The card is a bit like Farmlands, so I think naming it like a piece of land will suit it best. And meadow is such a sweet name, it should be used for a card anyway!
-
Hilarious - i voted for placeholder #3 - and apparently someone else had the same idea.

I think you'll find that first vote was mine!
I have claimed it in the name of the Province of Ozle!

Where is Bamboo Forest? :D

I dunno. 5 Victory cards are named after pieces of land, and 3 are after people, with one room and one... well, Tunnel. What's wrong with another person?
-
Nobles and Duke are nobility. I can't think of the third person victory card.

Harem.
-
I voted for Temple.
The one I don't like is Rock Garden. Not because I don't like the name--I love the name!--but because the Rock Garden card should a modified Garden card. Like, a Victory card that is worth VP per Treasures, or something.

Harem is a place though. isnt it?

Harem.
A harem can also be defined as a place.
Duke makes sense as a person because it is tied to Duchy.
Nobles -- they're... exceptional, I guess.

It was one of my suggestions and I thought the same thing afterwards.

Harem isn't a place. It's a group of people, like Nobles.

Really, I always thought it was an old muslim word for the 'sacred place'.
Well I have leartn two things today!
-
Harem can mean both!
har·em/ˈhe(ə)rəm/
Noun:
The part of a Muslim household reserved for wives, concubines, and female servants.
The wives (or concubines) of a polygamous man.

I'm happy with Herald, because it does seem like a sort of person that, if you have some, indicates you have wealth, power, and importance.
On the other hand, I also love most of these eastern place name suggestions that attempt to draw the parallel with Mandarin.
On the other other hand, the card is more like Scheme than Mandarin, so whatever.

I think it's more like Mandarin because:
- on-gain effect
- putting a card back on deck
-
TBH, I like Herald. It kind of brings up the idea of an announced Scheme as it were. And since the card is like Scheme, that makes sense. Also, a Herald could easily be in a Courtyard (another similar card) and Herald kind of brings up the sort of Nobility aspect that the existing non-land Victory cards already have.
-
I'm not sure how well this poll is going to go since 4 members, including myself, have voted for "The Whim of Captain Frisk"
-
The non place name vp cards are all exceptions:
Nobles is an action/vp - not a place because it dies something, but closely affiliated with a place
Harem is kind of a place (as discussed) and also dual
Duke is the leader of your duchies and not worth any vp without the attached place(s)
If herald was an action/victory it could make sense.
If he earned victory points because of other vp cards he could make sense
Otherwise he is a pretty big exception without a clear excuse...

Hm. Kind of weird that Baron isn't a VP card. What about Earl? I've tried to coin that as a VP card before..
-
Maybe Barons are low grade nobility that isn't really much to brag about.
-
In English nobility, the order goes: Duke Marquess Viscount Earl Baron (Do Men Ever Visit Boston). So perhaps Earl or Viscount would work (Marquess looks like Margrave).
-
Not sure if you're agreeing with me or disagreeing because I don't know the head from the tail
My guess is descending order.
-
It recycles things that were just used, there's got to be something thematically related to that!
I like tea house - provides respite and prepares the card for another go. But that doesn't feel like it works in all cases (ie treasure).
Maybe Channel (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rwaOBX2javk/Tkr1hYtvS_I/AAAAAAAABZ4/-46hGlblHwE/s400/riverconnector2.jpg) as an alternative? Rinse the card off and use it again, or send it back upstream, and you can use it to navigate (plus they are often manmade).
Alternatively, some form of location you can observe from, like a hilltop manor.

FTFY. I thought it was funny that you gave it a mnemonic, and then put them in the wrong order.

Here are a few other name ideas I came up with after searching for types of territory in Medieval times here (http://langs.eserver.org/feudal-dictionary.txt).
Benefice - A grant of land given to a member of the aristocracy, a Bishop, or a monastery, for limited or hereditary use in exchange for services. (The "exchange for services" seems to fit in thematically with the card's on-gain effect of top-decking a card in play) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benefice (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benefice)
Demesne (pronounced di-MAYN) - The part of the lord's manorial lands which was retained for his own use and support, not allocated to his serfs or freeholder tenants. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demesne (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demesne)
Manor - A small holding, typically 1200-1800 acres, with its own court and probably its own hall, but not necessarily having a manor house. Generally held by a knight or managed by a bailiff. (This would tie in thematically with the "Great Hall" card) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manor)

How about Beach?
-It suggests a parallel with Island, which is a somewhat related card.
-Like a tea house, a beach can be a place of respite.
-Things wash up on the beach. You could find a used action card, or even lost treasure.
-There should be a ton of options for artwork.
-
My vote is for Manor or Jarl/ Earl.

I might be stupid, but how do I actually do that?
-
Hmmm... I thought I clicked the box that allowed people to change their vote. Time to enact a drastic change. Complete vote reset!
-
Benefice is the most appropriate of the suggestions so far.
-
Darn it, "Placeholder" got removed as a choice!
-
Is this "Tea House" now, or something else, or are we leaving it "Herald"? Ultimately it's up to you, shark_bait, so let me know what you like best.

I demand a recount. I would pay good money for any expansion card with the title "The Whim Of Captain Frisk"

Huzzah! Even if I don't win any future contests, I can now say that I contributed to the fan expansion. :D

This topic has become confusing.

How so? Why the necro?
As I recall, there was a fan card named Herald that won a design contest and was subsequently renamed to better match its Victory typing.
-
If I recall correctly, Earl is a title essentially equivalent to Count. (The title for the wife of either is Countess.)
