Title: Riddle
Post by: ehunt on July 19, 2011, 01:49:02 pm
Lola has no cards in her deck or her discard pile, and a five card hand. She does some stuff, and then she uses her only buy on a copper. She earns exactly 33 points this turn; how?

She's at a hardware store buying copper tubing with credit cards. Loyalty program gives her points.

KC/KC/KC/KC/Ironworks something something something. There are probably multiple solutions. Throne Room is helpful if you don't want to reduce costs, settling for gaining Monuments and Great Halls with Ironworks. Play Black Market and drop a Quarry or two and you can go absolutely crazy, gaining KCs or Horns of Plenty with Ironworks. The "only buy" clause does stop this from being a really ho-hum KC/Bridge puzzle at least! and it rules out Goons.

DsnowMan's answer is way better.

She plays native village, picking up a bunch of KCs, monuments, Bishops, and TRs from her mat.

Alternately, she has a bunch of havens coming in with the same type of cards.

Alternatively, just go with Dsnowman's solution.

That would only earn 30 points, not 33. I suspect the OP's solution is along the lines of guided's posted solution.

Dsnowman's solution is undoubtedly the best though.

KC/KC/IW/IW gaining 6 Great Halls, then on your final KC you Masquerade and you trade 3 Great Halls for 3 Colonies, leaving you with 3 Great Halls and 3 Colonies -- 33 points.

Alternatively, Islands would give you 36 points.

I didn't think of the ironworks combos, which are cool, and which probably leave many non-unique ways to add up to 33. Shucks - I'll work harder before posting another of these.

Unfortunately, I don't have an elegant way of making my riddle cleaner except by saying, "um, I'm thinking of a solution that's not that one." So it goes. But the turn I have in mind doesn't involve Lola drawing any cards from her deck, from a native village mat, or from havens (or at all, if I've forgotten a way to draw cards).

Well, this definitely isn't what you're looking for, but it technically works:
You have 3 gardens and 4 other cards islanded, and your hand is KC, Expand, 3x Peddler. Expand all the peddlers into colonies gives 30, then the copper gets up to exactly 20 cards, good for an extra 3 points from the gardens.

This is tough; I have no idea how to do it with exactly 5 cards. The best I can do is 30.

The "only buy" clause does stop this from being a really ho-hum KC/Bridge puzzle at least!
I don't know about that, I think a KC/KC/KC/KC/IW start that gains enough Bridges will be gaining Nobles and Colonies with those IW's at some point....

You can't play Bridge, since it was stipulated that you only have one buy. That was the point of the portion of my post that you quoted :P

/edit, Elyv posted the solution I was thinking about.

The solution I had in mind was Elyv's, except there were dukes on the islands instead of gardens and she king's courted a transmute instead of an expand.

You win multiple internets for that answer.

I'm sure there are countless variations but I think one solution will be

Start King's Court, King's Court, King's Court, Workshop, Pearl Diver.

King's court on King's court on King's court
- Workshop x3 gains you Feast, Ironworks, Steward
- Pearl diver x3 draws the discard pile (3 cards)
- Feast x3 gains throne, mint, horn of plenty
- Ironworks x3 gains copper, menagerie, silver
- Steward x3 draws the discard pile (6 cards)
Thone the mint to gain 2 horns of plenty
Play the menagerie to draw the discard pile (2 cards)
Play the copper, silver, and the 3 horns of plenty, exchanging the three horns of plenty for 3 colonies

Kingdom cards - King's court, horn of plenty, mint, throne, feast, ironworks, menagerie, workshop, steward, pearl diver

That only scores 30 points.

I'm not sure why after having bought millions of colonies I still think they give 11 vp. Lets try again.

Start with 4 king's courts and an ironworks. Play out the king's courts together then ...
- Ironworks x3 gains ironworks, great hall (drawing ironworks), steward
- Ironworks x3 gains feast, workshop, great hall (drawing great hall)
- Great hall x3 draws steward, feast, workshop
- Feast x3 gains library, mint, horn of plenty
- Workshop x3 gains copper, monument, silver
- Steward x3 draws the discard pile (6 cards, leave silver on deck)
- Mint x 3 gains three horns of plenty
Play monument for 1 vp
Play the great hall and library to draw the discard pile
Play the copper, silver, and 3 of the horns of plenty, exchanging three of the horns of plenty for 3 colonies
Keep the last horn of plenty as a souvenir.

Kingdom cards - King's court, horn of plenty, mint, library, feast, ironworks, monument, workshop, steward, great hall

I hope the hardware store takes internets. Real copper is expensive...

PS EDIT: Spolier tag over kill? They can be so much fun

in the intended solution, it it not necessary, but in future turns, it gives her more transmutes for more duchies
