This question just came up in a RL game with some friends who value Inn's on-gain ability over what it does when played. If you receive an Inn as the result of a Masquerade, do you get to shuffle cards into your deck?
-
Like Ambassador, the cards that you pass with Masquerade are not "gained" and "on-gain" effects do not trigger.
-
Like Ambassador?
I agree with the second part of your sentence, Theory, but the "Like Ambassador" part doesn't really fit. When you gain a card due to somebody playing an Amb, it's a regular gain. (You may be referring to the fact that Amb does not trash cards?)
-
Yeah, Ambassador even says "each other player gains a copy of the revealed card."
However, that makes sense for Masquerade.
-
Also note, since it isn't a gain, you can't trash the incoming card with watchtower, you don't gain coppers if it's a cache, etc.
-
Ignore Theory. He thinks Cellar is a bad card because Warehouse exists. What a n00b.
-
You can only gain stuff from the supply (or trash), not from other players directly.
Ambassador returns cards first and players gain from the supply if it has enough cards.
Thief is routed through the trash.
Also, you can only gain cards that are actually there.
If you would gain a Curse and there are no more Curses in the supply, you can't reveal Trader to gain a Silver.

Oops, I meant to say ... I don't know what I meant to say. Agh! It's been a long weekend :(

Not sure if that's a rule, but it seems like there are no current cards that let you gain directly from another player, no.
You can gain from supply, from trash, or from a pile like Prizes, Madman, Spoils... So any "communal" pile basically.
