Title: Dominion addiction interfering with life
Post by: ehunt on July 15, 2011, 01:27:34 pm
Anyone else have this problem? Tips? I've quit forever at least 10 times. . . made a bunch of rules about when I can play, all of which I break, etc. It's really hurting me.

"well, just one game more...painted_cow has lost...okay, just one more..." :D

If you play with goals (reaching a certain level, skill cap) this can be very annoying and time stealing. After having reached those goals its much more easy to control yourself. Just my opinion.

Ride it out until the paid version comes out?

I spend way too much time playing as well... it's easy to say "just one more game", when most of them only last 5-10 minutes.  And, the skill level thing actually just compounds my problem (ooh, I'm a 41 now!  I wonder if I can get to 42....).

Ride it out until the paid version comes out?

This is actually what I'm banking on.  It's a more substantial line in the sand than any of the imaginary boundaries I've tried to create (no games until I do "x", no games today, etc.).  While I'll be sad if/when isotropic is shut down, it will actually be a really good thing for me, personally (as long as I can resist the paid version...).

Ye, its the way you described it. You "only" need to get #1 Leaderboard at least one day, and then your free of this "lets see how far can I get thing..."

And the short game duration of a 2-player-game is really a further problem to stop this long sessions.

Is it really hurting you though?  There are far worse and destructive things to be "addicted" to than a card game that at worst exercises your mind.  Unless you're skipping bills, calling in sick, losing your friends, locking yourself in, and withdrawing from life, it may not be as bad as you think.  Spending a lot of time doing something you enjoy is not automatically bad.   :)

When it starts effecting your sleeping patterns, eating habits, your working life, studies, or your exercise routine, then you're playing too much. If you're seriously addicted you need to find something to fill the void of this when you try to get off it. All the best.

I'm also switching between playing lots and not playing recently. I think Isotropic is just offering such an easy way to play and it's really the thing about setting yourself own goals that makes you keep playing. I once had the rule that I'm only allowed one best of five series per day, that way I really wanted to win at least 3 of these 5 games. It worked quite well for a while ...

If your serious about this then you could probably just ask the admin to ban your IP to here and Isotropic?

Leechblock (http://www.proginosko.com/leechblock.html) for Firefox. Or find a similar extension for your browser(s). Use the 64-character password for access control, or better yet have your girlfriend etc. come up with a password. Leechblock is great for choosing what time of the day, and for how long, you can access websites. It helped me a lot when I was supposed to be looking for a job, as well as when I was taking classes full-time.

Here is an example thread I made@TL.net for this type of problem.  8) http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?id=196872

Read it and substitute teamliquid.net with dominionstrategy.com and dominion.isotropic.com
Also substitute star craft with Dominion. Read the comments for quite a few laughs. Hope this helps!

Okay, all jokes aside, your problem is probably not Dominion. You're trying to fight the effect and not the cause. I don't have a master in psychology, so take my advice for what it's worth. If ever you find you are isolating yourself and taking it out on the internet, invest more time in your offline existence. Visit some family and friends and enjoy some real life board games with them. Maybe you'll even realize that games aren't about winning, they are about having fun!

I'm sure there are even some serious gaming groups in your area (they're everywhere!), so if you look around at BGG or try to get some guys together yourself, it may be well worth it.

Tape a province to your arm like a nicotine patch, and when people ask why explain the problem.
You'll either soon get bored of explaining it or get too embarissed and problem solved!

Good idea, though I've just been sucking on an Estate for on the spot craving relief instead.
