My apologies if this is somewhere obvious like in the rulebook, but what on earth are the white/blank cards in that paper-dominion boardgame used for?
Right now my wife and I use it for "wild cards" in the randomiser cards. So she gets the blank, she puts her villiage in the kingdom.
Is there another purpose these fill?

Design your own custom cards!

I have a friend who uses them as the promos.
-
I've used them as spares.
-
I believe they were intended to mark an empty pile, as I still use them for.

Donald has said that the Randomizer cards were originally meant to mark empty piles, which is why the basic Treasure and Victory cards have them in the original box. Though, using the blank cards is certainly viable. I normally use cards from the Trash or even just a Copper (since they very rarely run out).
Blank cards are, I believe, meant for customization. A lot of games do that.
Between the period when Cornucopia was announced and when Cornucopia hit the stores, I toyed with the idea of using the blank cards to represent various Cornucopia cards so I could play with them before I bought them. My schedule never allowed me to do that, and Isotropic provided that fix anyway. I may do that for the next expansion.

The point to the blanks is, the game costs the same with or without them, so we might as well give them to you, in case you find something to do with them.

We tried a variant once where we placed the dark blue cards into each supply at random. If you got one, it'd double something on the card. So Super Swindler would be +$4 with the standard attack, and Super Market (great name for a card, actually) would be +$2, +2 buys, +2 Actions, +2 Cards. It's completely luck based and unbalanced, but it's fun to break the game every now and then.

Cards are always produced in a certain multiples -- If I'm correct, they're cut from sheets which are always a certain size. For instance, if there are 50 cards per sheet, but you want to make a game with 92 cards in them, too bad, you're going to need to make 100 cards. Donald X. had the option of either throwing those extra cards away or giving you blank cards, and he chose to give you the blanks. There's no specific purpose to them but there are lots of things you can do.
iirc books work the same way, the number of (physical) pages in a book is usually a multiple of some number. The publisher usually just puts in more/fewer dedication pages or other filler to round out the number.

We use them for promos
