Title: Opening 5-2 on a board with YW/Tunnel and Ambassador - help

Cards in supply: Alchemist, Ambassador, Caravan, Cellar, Duchess, Potion, Spice Merchant, Thief, Treasure Map, Tunnel, Workshop♦, and Young Witch

Given that I opened 5-2 as second player with no 5 on the board, what should I do here against the YW/Tunnel open?

I opened Tunnel/Cellar (don't see that everyday) with a turn 3 and 4 Ambassador. Of course my economy was in trouble but I had a chance to luck into a victory at the end and it didn't quite work out.

Thoughts? Help? Or was I just screwed with very little chance of victory here?

You messed up turn 1 by shuffling terribly. ;D

In all honesty... I probably would've done the same thing. I might've opened Ambassador/Celler, then gone Tunnel/Tunnel (always returning 2 with Amb, buying Cellar if that only left me $2).

The problem here is... You need your Ambassador early to toss junk, but this isn't a deck slimming board, so having 2 and trying to counter YW isn't really going to work. I think buying 1 out of the gates and hoping for the best is all you can do.

No matter how you play it, 5/2 is going to be at a disadvantage to 4/3 here. Probably a large one. Shuffle better next time.  ;)

5/2 is brutal here, but I definitely would not have opened with a $5 Tunnel.  Young Witch/Nothing seems like the best opening to me, and pick up Tunnels later.  You could do Yong Witch/Cellar too, but that risks drawing the Cellar dead, and the Cellar isn't doing anything for you until you have Tunnels anyway.  I think starting with the YW is important.  Even if you can't pile up Gold as fast as the 4/3 opener, you can at least give him some Curses.  He's not gonna be getting a Workshop in all likelihood.

Ambassador/Nothing could work too.  Again, I'd pass on the early Cellar.  Reducing your handsize when going Ambassador doesn't seem fruitful to me.
