Hi, I'm Dsell and I've spent 4 days and 0 minutes looking at this forum (well, a tad more now). Wow. I started playing Dominion a whole bunch in real life back in January, and started reading f.ds and playing on isotropic about the same time in early march. This is a pretty awesome community here and I've learned SO much from the contributions of the members and from playing (well, mostly losing to...) you guys as well.
I love board games of all types (shout out to Cosmic Encounter!) and I really want to try to become a top Dominion player someday. Also, I think it's WAY cool that the master himself, Donald X. frequents the forums. I still pause in reverential awe every time I see one of his posts.
Overall, 4 days well spent!

I think it's fitting because Donald X. happens to also be very, very good at Dominion. This is not true of all game designers, but is definitely true in this case.

It seems to really depend on the group you play with. In a lively group, it's crazy and extremely tense nearly every time. But I agree, I think it's unique in that you can gang up on the leader, occasionally has glaring balance issues, and sometimes you never even get a turn...and it's still great. A few house rules (we play with double powers, hidden until used) can really enhance the game too.
I think what I love most about that game is that it's so very different each time, keeping the flavor and interactions fresh.

Oh man, not us. I get the feeling that every group has their own way of playing, but we tend to be helpful and wonderfully diplomatic up until someone gets their fourth planet. Then, with relatively few exceptions, they are on their own, with every ship and card people can spare going up against them. Sure, it drags the game on a bit, but it does give you a real sense of accomplishment when you finally do win (especially when you absolutely obliterate everything your 5 opponents can muster against you).
I do remember one game though, that was just an absolute stalemate. After 5 hours, I ended up trading four planets with someone for the shared win, and only because our guests had to leave. :P

Hehe, every CE game we play is basically the same:
Everyone invites everyone for everything (barring past grievances).
Someone is at 4: We must stop inviting him.
Someone else hops to 5 via Artefact/Flare/Power.

Yeah this is totally my group of Cosmic friends. Idk how it will go on the forum but we always do whatever we can to stop someone from getting a guaranteed win. Sometimes the girls will go "girl power" and agree to share a win, though. I hate it. ::)

It really does make it seem that way! I do spend a lot of time over at forum games, but I read most Dominion-related things too. Sometimes I'll comment but I am not nearly as much of an expert as a lot of people in those areas. I would play more actual Dominion but the forum takes all my time! :P

I've never formally introduced myself, but there isn't much to say, really. I live in Montreal, where the winters have -30 degrees Celsius days and the summers have +30 degrees Celsius days. I'm still in school, studying Software Engineering. Got into Dominion a few years ago through my sister. That's about it.
I took a look at the forum games. I don't feel like putting time into them right now, seeing as how I just discovered the addiction that is League of Legends this week.

Indeed. I remember my ecology teacher telling us why the city has so much weather variance, but I forgot what he said. Either it has something to do with the proximity of water here, or the lack thereof.

I've been away a long time.
The last time I was active was when I was starting a new job. That job wound up being quite soul-sucking and unfortunately left little spare time for me, but after almost 3 years I left that job/industry and have just started a new career putting my degree to work at an escape room company. I'm doing the work I want to be doing and in the gaming industry. My average workday is significantly shorter and I have unbelievable flexibility with my schedule. It still hardly feels real.
Today is also my 1 year anniversary with my amazing boyfriend.
Over the last few years I've seen some old forum friends do some incredible things, and I am so glad to see them still hanging around here! Just today, AdamH won the Dominion World Championship. Amazing. :')
And of course, there has been quite a lot of Dominion content released while I'm away. I have a lot of catching up to do, and I am so excited about it.

It's good to see that truly nothing changes. Eons may pass, but forum mafia will remain.
I am going to avoid mafia for at least a while as I figure out my schedule, but I will keep this on my radar.
