Title: How many different openings are viable with this setup?

Relevant cards: Great Hall, Hamlet,  Horse Traders, Ironworks, Remake, Spice Merchant,  and Tunnel
Irrelevant cards: Herbalist, Stash, Treasure Map

We both opened IW/Silver, but here's a list of some of the openings that aren't (immediately at least) ignorable.

IW/Silver
IW/Hamlet
HT/Silver
HT/Tunnel
HT/Hamlet
Remake/Silver
Remake/Hamlet
Spice Merchant/Silver
Spice Merchant/Hamlet

Also, if any of you would care to posit which opening is actually best, that would also be greatly appreciated  :P.

I *think* I like Remake/Silver here, but maybe that's just me. I like turning Estates into Great Halls, and clearing out a couple of Coppers.

However, I am intrigued by Spice Merchant / x (Silver? Great Hall even since you want to avoid clog?) moving into a Horse Trader / Tunnel strategy.

I'm not really sure I see the value in Ironworks on this board unless you are trying for an ultra quick 3 pile with Tunnels and Great Hall...

I think I like Remake/Silver as well, but to turn those Estates into Tunnels and buy HT asap after the open. As for IW, I don't think it does all that much here even with Great Hall. There is no Silk Road or Gardens and while everything can be gained by it, there is nothing overly powerful that can't be obtained just as quickly without it.

I think I would open remake/hamlet rather than remake silver, with the intention of remaking estates into tunnels.

This. Everyone seems to be advocating HT/Tunnel, but I think Hamlet/Tunnel would work much better, since it draws a card, is not terminal, and allows you to discard UP TO 2 cards. I would probably also get an Ironworks next time I had $4.

I'm not sure. Terminal doesn't really bother me here, as I'm unlikely to be chaining actions anyway. More than that though, if you discard 1 card to Hamlet, you are playing with only a 4 card hand. Discard 2, and it's a 3 card hand. You get no return benefit. With Horse Traders, you also get the late game +buy to pick up a possible tie breaking point, but most importantly, you get a return investment of $3 on three cards. Recognizing that "average hand value" is the summation of all high value cards and all low value cards, it shouldn't be that much of a stretch to expect to hit $5 on the last two cards in hand with some regularity late in the game.

It would be close for sure. I could see reasons to go both ways.. I just have a feeling HT would edge Hamlet on this setup.

You can still open Remake / Silver and have a high likelihood of changing at least 1 Estate into a Tunnel and buying both Hamlet and HT on turns 3 and 4.

With so many cards likely to be high in demand (read: Hamlet, GH, Tunnel) and easy +buys (HT, IW-Psuedobuy, Hamlet), it seemed like a 3pile was all but certain in the game. Whether that means you actually want IW first is a different story.

Remake down to nothing and get treasure maps?
