Title: Tunnel + Set Aside
Post by: luzgins on May 07, 2020, 10:08:43 pm
I was reading the Rules for seaside Hinterlands (the ones that came with my hard copy) and I came across this entry for Tunnel:

Tunnel's Reaction ability functions when you discard it. You cannot simply choose to discard it; something has to let you or make you discard it. This ability functions whether you discard the tunnel on your own turn or on someone else's. It functions if tunnel is discarded from your hand or from your deck, or when set aside. (emphasis mine)

Does this mean that I can set aside my Tunnel with an Island to gain a gold? Everyone online says no, but the rules as written seem pretty clear that it should work.

The sentence is unclear, but it means if you discard it from being set aside.

Ah, I see it now. Is there an example of when this could happen?

Interestingly, I couldn't find an example that works on Tunnel - if it were an Action card, then Library would be one such case. Possession is another almost-ran - but it specifically says that you put the gained cards in your discard, but you don't discard them so Tunnel wouldn't trigger.

Yeah. I was about to say Hunting Party, Loan, Venture, etc. but they don't set aside.

When you reveal or look at cards from your deck, those cards are not in your deck. So if you discard a Tunnel with Lookout or Sentry, you're not discarding from your deck. Donald has referred to these cards as set-aside, and I suspect that's what is meant in the rules for Tunnel.

If it's been exiled, and is now being discarded from exile.

Is that 'set aside' though?
