Title: Sleigh
Post by: ksparg on March 18, 2020, 09:49:59 am
Sleigh's text says "Gain 2 Horses." Its reaction text says, "When you gain a card, you may discard this, to put that card into your hand or onto your deck."

My question: Since the reaction text does not specify discarding "from your hand" or "from play," are both situations included in its ability?

No, "Discard" always means "from hand" by default, unless otherwise specified.

See Warehouse (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Warehouse) for a simple example; it says "Discard 3 cards." You must discard those 3 cards from your hand.

*Edit for clarity*.. the instruction to discard a card, whether "discard this" or "discard x cards", must be from hand. But Tunnel and Village Green have "when you discard this" and that usage of "discard" applies to discarding from anywhere, not only discarding from hand.

Makes sense. Thank you!

We had a long discussion about exactly this when it comes to Beggar. (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=7307.0)
Beggar was actually unique in that it's the only card that lets you discard itself, which is not necessarily exactly the same as telling you to discard a card. Now with Sleigh we have two of these.
Late edit: Market Square also does this, but unlike Beggar and Sleigh, says "from your hand".
