Decrypto is a game that usually appeals to the same people as Codenames does.
https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/225694/decrypto
Players compete in two teams in Decrypto, with each trying to correctly interpret the coded messages presented to them by their teammates while cracking the codes they intercept from the opposing team.
In more detail, each team has their own screen, and in this screen they tuck four cards in pockets numbered 1-4, letting everyone on the same team see the words on these cards while hiding the words from the opposing team. In the first round, each team does the following: One team member takes a code card that shows three of the digits 1-4 in some order, e.g., 4-2-1. They then give a coded message that their teammates must use to guess this code. For example, if the team's four words are "pig", "candy", "tent", and "son", then I might say "Sam-striped-pink" and hope that my teammates can correctly map those words to 4-2-1. If they guess correctly, great; if not, we receive a black mark of failure.
Starting in the second round, a member of each team must again give a clue about their words to match a numbered code. If I get 2-4-3, I might now say, "sucker-prince-stake". The other team then attempts to guess our numbered code. If they're correct, they receive a white mark of success; if not, then my team must guess the number correctly or take a black mark of failure. (Guessing correctly does nothing except avoid failure and give the opposing team information about what our hidden words might be.)
The rounds continue until a team collects either its second white mark (winning the game) or its second black mark (losing the game). Games typically last between 4-7 rounds. If neither team has won after eight rounds, then each team must attempt to guess the other team's words; whichever team guesses more words correctly wins.
There is a word list generator we could use here: https://whoawhoa.github.io/decrypto/#
Anyone wanna play?
-
I'm in.
-
I've never played, but I'd try, if there's space.
-
We need one more player.
-
/in
How do we adjust the rules for playing it online?
-
My suggestion for the gameflow that should work from what I can think of.
Pregame:
1) Make teams.
2) Each team makes a quicktopic and generates a wordlist using https://whoawhoa.github.io/decrypto/#, posting it in the qt
Game starts
1) Cluegivers generate a code using the same site, make clues and post them to the game thread.
2) Guessers guess their own teams code. Starting round 2, teams simultaneously discuss about the opponent's clue and try to guess their code.
3) Once a guess is made, it is posted to the game thread in spoilers
4) Once all guesses are ready, the cluegivers reveal the correct codes and tokens are assigned.
5) Start new round with switched cluegivers.
Does anybode see any problems with that?
-
I randomized teams and it's scolapasta + me vs faust + ghostofmars
-
I apologize in advance to Watno. :)
-
Ooh, I like this one. I dunno if there's room for another, though.
Would all team conversations be held in the quicktopic? How much would be public? Just the clues themselves/answers? Or the discussion too?
-
The gameflow proposal seems fine. I would be open to more players, but we should probably have the same number of players on each team.
-
I would suggest the following modification
1) Cluegivers generate a code using the same site, make clues and post them to the game thread.
2) Guessers guess their own teams code. Starting round 2, teams simultaneously discuss about the opponent's clue and try to guess their code.
3a) If you guess the clue of your own team, you post it in the team quicktopic.
3b) If you guess the clue of the opposing team, you post it in spoilers in the game thread.
4) Once all guesses are ready, the cluegivers state their partner's guess, reveal the correct codes and tokens are assigned.
5) Start new round with switched cluegivers.
This avoids accidentally spoiling the code of the team with the keywords. You can still accidentally spoil the guess of the team without the keywords, but that is less critical.
Do we need time limits or do we just play as fast as we can?
-
ghostofmars' suggestions sound good.
I agree that we should have even teams, and there doesn't seem to be anyone else interested. Maybe we'll get another game going when people realize how much fun we're having.
I'll start the game now by making a qt for our team and creating a wordlist. Then I guess I'll just give the first clue for simplicity's sake.
-
My clue: Fall - Line - Jam
Other team can choose their own cluegiver i guess (maybe just whoever gets to it first)
Anyone know how to move the thread?
-
I created the codewords and the quicktopic for faust and me. I let him confirm that he can access it and then start with our first clues.
Anyone know how to move the thread?
In the very bottom of the page, above quickreply.

OK, so I'm not just new to Decrypto but also this QT thing.
Meaning I'm going to be extra careful and just make sure I do the right thing before I do it.
i.e now that Watno has given a clue, I have to come up with a 3 number answer (X-Y-Z). And I will post that not here, but in the QT? (is that so it can be discussed with other teammates, if and when we Expand to more than 4 players)?
-
In the first round it doesn't really matter, because we will not guess anyway. In the future, it might happen that you post before us. If we accidentally read uncover the spoiler tags or you forget to use them, it can ruin the game.
The discussion with your teammate still happens in 4 player games, because you can discuss the clues of the other team.
Btw. search engines allowed or not?
-
I guess I'm not understanding why the guess of the other team is in spoilers (in the 2nd round).
i.e round 2 begins:
Watno gives a second set of clues. You (and your team) guess X-Y-Z. If wrong, I then guess A-B-C. Am I not supposed to know what X-Y-Z was before I guess A-B-C? (and in parallel we are also guessing D-E-F off your teams clue)
Sorry for all the questions...
-
Oh, and I vote no search engines)
-

In RL, we would write our guess on a sheet of paper and so would you. So neither we would be allowed to see A-B-C nor you would be allowed to see X-Y-Z before the correct answer is revealed.
To play the game by forum, we can make slight adjustments to make the game faster. Because you have more information than us (you know the codewords), us seeing A-B-C has a major impact on the game (hence posting it in the QT). In contrast, you seeing X-Y-Z does not have the same urgency, because if you have to rely on our guesses to figure out what Watno meant, you are probably in trouble anyway. Still you should try to make your guess without seeing our attempted encryption, hence the spoiler tags.

You're not supposed to know the opposing team's guess before making your own, so don't look at the spoiler before making your guess.
If you accidentally do, it doesn't break the game, since their guess is likely wrong anyway (they don't know our words).
The guess is still posted in the game thread to skip a step in the communication.
It will go like this:
Team A: Our guess for your clue is: 1-2-3 (decided collectively in qt beforehand)
Team B: Our guess for your clue is: 3-2-1 (decided collectively in qt beforehand).
My partner's guess for our clue is: 1-2-4. (posted in qt by partner beforehand)
1-2-4 is correct.
Team A: My partner's guess for our clue is: 1-3-4.
3-1-4 is correct. (posted in qt by partner beforehand)
Ok with no search engines.
-
Got it and makes perfect sense.
-
(And I get why it doesn't really matter for Round 1, though I did post it in the QT)
-
My clue: Grow - India - Thumb
-
Okay, we have a guess.
ghost's guess for my clue was 4-2-1.
That is correct.
PS: I support the no search engines rule.
-
Is there any limitation on QT discussion? It seems there should be, like obviously it will be bad to tell the clue giver "if you want me to guess word 4 (POWER), say HAMSTER." So communication is only allowed about the opposing team's clues?
Alternatively we could also make a rule that all discussion must be public. I don't know how these things are handled in the IRL version.
-
According to the rules all clues must be based on public information, so I agree that one should only use the QT to discuss the other team's clues and to submit the guess. There are just 24 different codes, so even very little extra information can make it easy to beat the system.

Yeah, the only thing discussed in the it should be the opponents clue.
scolapasta correctly guesses 3-4-1
scolapasta and ghost should make clues now and post them here.
-
I'm abusing my moderator powers to update ghost's post.
-
Oh, I make the next clue? In other words, we alternate rounds. Got it.
-
Actually, one more question about what I do.
I'll go to that decrypto site, ignore the words (since we already have ours), and just click generate new code. Then using that code, I'll come up with a clue (x-y-z) and post that here.
Correct?

Correct. Just keep in mind that you cannot get 3-4-1 (in this order) again, so if that happens just generate another code.
Also, I think it is my turn, too, so I have a code for faust.
Oranges - Blueberries - Cucumbers
-
So rather than just keep asking questions here, I decided to find the rulebook online. So I think I've got it all.
One thing, though, it did say you could have the same code again ("Put both Code cards used this round back into
their respective decks and shuffle. It is possible to draw the same code from one round to the next")
Here are my clues for this round:
Prize - Ocean - Fire

-
Our guess for your clue is 2-3-4.
For our clue:
ghostofmars guessed 2-3-4
Team Watno-scolapasta guessed 1-4-3.
2-3-4 is correct!
-
Scolapasta guesses 1-2-3 for our clue.
Correct code is 4-2-3.
Both guesses are wrong, that's a miscommunication for us
-
Ugh.
Are we allowed to post mortem a round (in our QT, of course), i.e. discuss our clues and guesses?
-
I would say no. That gives too many ways to influence the upcoming clues.

Stepping in ghost's footsteps!

I saw it... and I posted my thoughts in our QT. I'll go delete that post, but I don't know if ghost saw it.

:(
Since It's my fault, I suggest you just keep working with both clues and we just use the legal one.
Then after the round we reveal the illegal clue so scolapasta can take into account the connections you have for the upcoming clues.
Is that okay with everyone?
Sorry about the screwup.

Why game over?
-
Why game over?
Oh no, if ghost got my clue wrong, it would be game over. But it's correct, so we continue playing.
-
I've just noticed that technically - according to the rules -, if team A gives a clue and team B successfully intercepts, then team A does not need to guess their own clue. So your team's guess does not need to be revealed if interception happened, and you can't receive miscommunication tokens for it.
I've stumbled upon this while researching what would happen if a team gains their second interception and miscommunication token in the same round. The answer then is: interception happens first, so they would still win.

Are you sure? This is what I see:
"Therefore, it is possible that one team receives a
Miscommunication token (because they misinterpreted
their Encryptor’s clues), while the opposing team
receives an Interception token (because they successfully
intercepted their opponents’ code) in the same round."

You're right. I was just going off of the short blurb that Watno posted in the OP, but the actual rules state that it works differently.

Are we planning on revealing this now? Or not, since ghost also did not see it? I'm fine either way, but if we decide to reveal, would like to know before I come up with my clue for the round.

I'll reveal it to just scolapasta then.

Final round coming up!
-
Final round incoming.
Remember that if o team has won after round 8, both teams try to guess their opponent's words, and the team that gets more correct wins.
-
Menagerie - Venus - Largest
-
Close-Ski-Arm
-
We guess 2 - 4 - 1 for your code.
-
Our guess for your clue is: 1-4-3
My partner's guess for our clue is: 2-1-4.
2-3-1 was correct - that's our 2nd miscommunication.
So for a tie after this round, we need either for to also have miscommunicated or for us to have intercepted (with both getting us the win).
🤞

Yeah, my misdirection worked :)
Do you want to guess our words or should we just reveal the quicktopic?
-
We guessed the following words for you:
1: Gun
2: Eye
3: Cliff
4 was the hardest one. Right now I lean towards Painting.
-
I can also state now that to this day I have no idea how the Blueberries clue connects to 1.

In hindsight that was not a good clue, because it uses a bad kind of clue difficulty. Good clue difficulty is hard for the opponents and easy for your own team, this was just equally hard for both teams.
My idea at the time was to give minimal differences between the words as to uncover as least as possible about the hidden code words. So I came up with a property that I could link to all the clues and then added one layer of obfuscation. This obfuscation is bad, because both your own team and the opponents need the same effort to work it out. I tried to hint at the obfuscation with the words chosen, but obviously that failed. Given the three words Oranges - Blueberries - Cucumbers, can you guess which property, I wanted to hint at? It was the colors orange - blue - green.
Now that still doesn't explain the connection with the words, while orange and green should be obvious, I had two reasons to believe blue could be decoded. The stronger one is that the fruit would have been Bananas otherwise. The weaker one is the infamous "Blue Dog" rule explanation in Dominion.
-
Damnit! We did briefly consider 2 for Menagerie.
We're fairly certain 4 is Greenhouse.
And I JUST now figure out 3, I think: Old Faithful (for a while we were thinking Fireworks)
1 and 2? 1 maybe something like King, and I think we're still stumped on two.
Watno, anything to add?
-
I have lots for post mortem about our clues. Though I'll likely have to post piecemeal.
Our words:
Rifle
Microscope
Cliff
Drawing
Trying to come up with an 8th clue for Cliff?? Man.
The one I missed Smithy made perfect sense after, and I'm sad I didn't even consider the Dominion aspect. I also really liked Tie.
Watno, questions on any of my clues?
Also some rules questions:
1) If on the last round say we hadn't already had a miscommunication, could we have just given a nonsense clue? Or, ias I assume, that's not quite in the spirit of the rules, but a very farfetched connection would be ok?
2) For a word like microscope, which is compound, could we have given clues to point to just one part of the word? Even if we used a meaning of the word that did not related to the whole? e.g. Mouthwash to refer to "Scope", which is a brand of mouthwash*
(*) I still might not have, because I don't know if Scope is well known outside the USA
3) What happens for accidental illegal clues? i.e. I almost gave Bar, for Cliff, because of the snack bar (again not sure how well known outside the USA, but looking now it turns out it's actually Clif with only one F
-
Just red your spoilers? How about Tiger for your number 2?
-
Ugh, I just realized how close we were - I kept trying to think of an animal to associate with #2 and I was thinking Elephant (due to India) or maybe Zebra (due to pattern) If Tiger had popped into my head then, I would have been sure "Paper Tigers" and we would have intercepted!
-
Oh (and sorry for all posts), and congratulations to faust and ghostofmars, you guys did a great job of stumping us throughout the 8 rounds. Great game!

1) I think according to the rules if there is no winner after 8 rounds, the team with the better token balance wins (before doing the word guess thing). So unless you have 0 miscommunications and 1 interception, and the opposing team has 1 miscommunication and 0 interceptions, I don't think nonsense clues help.
I don't know about 2 and 3, but would generally try to limit to clues which relate to one meaning of the complete word. Though ghost did try to give 2 clues that would have violated 2. It's a thin line as usually things that fit with one part of the compound will fit the whole thing to some extent.

Our words (don't think spoilers are needed anymore):
Rule
Tiger
Yellowstone
Greenhouse
QT is here (https://quicktopic.com/52/H/CB3YUFMPrCxX).
-
You had Rifle/Microscope and gave the Blood clue for Microscope? That's quite dangerous.
-
For the record I know of neither Scope nor Clif, even though I've lived in the US for 3 months.
-
Reading our own QT I realized that we discussed Drawing for 4 and neither of us noticed the connection to Smithy :o
-
In round 4 and 6 my clues were rather straight forward, but in the last round I was relatively sure that you got Rule and Greenhouse, but did not know Tiger yet. Hence I chose a word that intentionally overlapped with both Rule and Tiger but being a bit closer to Tiger. I don't know how easy it was for faust to work out the difference, but I am glad it ultimately worked out.
Would anybody be up for another round?
-
I went the same way of trying to find more vague clues on Round 8 with: Close, Ski, and Arm
(not knowing you were thinking eye I was hoping the verb / adjective definitions of Close would be confusing)
Same with Arm for weapons vs body part, though that confused Watno more than y'all.
And ski was my attempt to be vague on Cliff, which I was assuming you knew. It worked in that you missed it, but failed in that so did Watno,
I am definitely in for another round.

Oh, and here's our QT:

Congratulations.
I guess I overthought the last clue. I thought you wouldn't really ski at a cliff.
I'd be up for another, and we had 2 more people interested as well.
Go for a game with 6?

Like I said, 8 clues for Cliff was a tall order.
Happy to add a team member!

I sent out messages to bitwise and Uncleeurope, who expressed interest in playing.

Thanks for the PM! I'm still interested.

Hi, I still have interest, although I am a lot busier now.
In theory I should be fine to join, though.
