Title: Google translates Dominion
Post by: Violet CLM on November 22, 2017, 01:57:26 pm
I was up late last night laughing at GoogleTranslatesMTG (https://twitter.com/hashtag/GoogleTranslatesMTG?src=hash&lang=en) and then thought hey, how hard could this be? Turns out it's pretty hard. But I managed to get a few bright spots out of translating cards through eight or more languages and back again.

To be fair, "Everything is cool and fun" is basically what I felt the first time read Black Market's setup text.  (YMMV :P)

the big mystery is what is the chain of languages that was able to turn Black Market's +(http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/3/3d/Coin2.png/16px-Coin2.png) into Snack's +(http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/3/32/Coin3.png/16px-Coin3.png)...

This one is my favorite. Everything about it.

that might have been a typo on my part, after I decided that "Coin2.png" was a bit much to ask from google translate

So where does this come from? Is it just translating to another language and back to English repeatedly, like translationparty does? Because generally translationparty produces hilarious wordings and grammar; but it seems really weird for it to just create completely random words out of no where, like "insects" on Treasure Map, or "Pay attention" for playing a treasure.

I don't suppose for Watchtower, you accidentally left the types as "Card Types" or some such? That seems a lot more likely to produce "Map. Comment"

No, it's more like English->Spanish->Urdu->Japanese->Afrikaans->Chinese->Danish->English. Or whatever other sequence. English at either end but a bunch of random, non-English languages in the middle.

As for Watchtower, eh. "Comment" is a pretty plausible translation of "Reaction" in my mind, in that they both require something to have happened/been said before they can be done. And most of the other cards show that "Action," a totally abstract noun with zero context, is a very difficult word for google translate to understand, so I'd say "Map" is as good as a result as anything else.

Well, somewhere in the text you reveal 3 cards. I assumed that's what caused it.

I can see how it might have turned "Action" into something like "make" or "work", which got changed from one similar verb to another until it ended up as "map", the verb rather than the noun.

It's also possible that it's just a homonym in one of those languages.

The reason I asked is that I believe the words for “map” and “card” are the same in German.

Oh good point, that they are. Although I think Reaction --> Comment takes less of my imagination than Type --> Comment. Would be interesting to hear OP's answer to your question.

Interestingly, when I go straight from English to German, "Card Types" goes to "Kartentypen", which I would guess is enough context for any German or any translation service to know that it's "card type" and not "map type". But who's to say. I'm no linguist, and I was an awful German student.

Funnily enough, my original thought was also prompted by German, and how if "Action" somehow ended up at "machen" due to an intermediate translation, then the meaning could get warped pretty fast. But your reasoning takes less of a leap in logic.

There's definitely some German influence in Pixie->Eleventh or Treasure->Schatz, but I have no idea why or how I'd have typed "card type." It's not like that pair of words appears anywhere for me to have copied.

Anyway, I think Dominion now wants to teach you the rules to Hangman and Blackjack:

"The Emergence of Tourism" sounds like the title of a work paper in geography. Bring it!
