Title: Travellers as Young Witch's Bane
Post by: AlbinoCerberus on November 17, 2017, 01:25:46 pm
The Bane card for Young Which can be chosen from any 2 or 3 value card pile. Both of the base-level Traveller cards (Page and Peasant) are 2 value, meaning they do qualify, and could be selected to be Young Witch's Bane. However, when playing these cards you may upgrade them to cards not in the supply. I assume the official ruling is that if the Bane card is Page, then a Treasure Hunter (upgraded from a Page) cannot be revealed as Bane because they are not from the Page supply pile, adding a risk-vs-reward aspect to upgrading. However, some doubt has been sewn in my mind based on the Empires preview on Split Decks, where it says Catapult/Rocks can be chosen as Bane, and both cards qualify as Bane, despite Rocks having a cost of 4. Catapult/Rocks is a single card pile, but it does not consistently have a cost of 3. I figured I'd ask just to be sure: Can upgraded Travellers be revealed as Young Witch's Bane?

Nope, you were right that they cannot be revealed as the Bane. They're not from the same pile.

I figured as much, but I'm happy for the clarification. Thanks. :)

The reason is that Young Witch says to choose a Kingdom card pile costing $2 or $3. When a pile has different cards, it's the randomizer card that decides the cost and types of that pile.

The Catapult/Rocks pile has a cost of $3: http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/File:Catapult_Rocks.jpg
If that pile is chosen by Young Witch, the cards from it are Bane cards.

The only card from the Page pile is Page.
