Title: REQ: Cost math tables
Post by: DooWopDJ on June 12, 2017, 01:40:46 pm
Hello, hello

Well as much as I enjoy Dominion, there is one place that I still struggle.. simple cost reduction math, including Potions and now Debt.

is there a table out there for each 'cost reduction' type that will help us understand a little better, what we are allowed to do?

-Thanks

I'm not sure what you are asking for here? Is it just a list of costs for every card based on the number of Bridges played / Highways in play / Bridge Trolls in play, etc?

Exampe: Sabateur: Each other player reveals cards from the top of his deck until revealing one costing 3 Coin or more. He trashes that card and may gain a card costing at most 2 Coins less than it.

That phrase '... at most 2 Coins less than...' is too 'mathy' for me.  I need a table that says
Trash 6, gain a 4 card?
Trash a 3 Potion, can I get a 3 only, or does it require a Potion to be in the cost.

But there are a lot of other 'in it's cost' phrases' in other cards (like bridges), and what if I have 2 bridges, reduced by 2 and not 1 (but not less than zero).  I think a table form would work for me but I will take what I can get for help

I think you're over-complicating something. There are currently 3 types of currency in Dominion ((http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/6/6d/Coin.png/16px-Coin.png), (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/7/7a/Potion.png/9px-Potion.png), (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/8/81/Debt.png/18px-Debt.png)), but (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/6/6d/Coin.png/16px-Coin.png) is the only one that has any cost-reduction. Bridge, Highway, Princess, Bridge Troll, and Ferry all reduce only (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/6/6d/Coin.png/16px-Coin.png) costs, they never have any impact on the other 2 kinds. So Alchemist with a Highway in play costs (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/3/3d/Coin2.png/16px-Coin2.png)(http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/7/7a/Potion.png/9px-Potion.png) instead of (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/3/32/Coin3.png/16px-Coin3.png)(http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/7/7a/Potion.png/9px-Potion.png). That's all there is to it.

Ah I see. You aren't asking about cost reduction, but about cost comparison. Quite different. Not sure about a table, but what you need is this:

Card A costs more than another card B if they don't cost the same, and for all 3 currency types, A has the same or more of that cost than B.

Card A costs less than another card B if they don't cost the same, and for all 3 currency types, A has the same or less than that cost than B.

What this means is that (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/3/32/Coin3.png/16px-Coin3.png)(http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/7/7a/Potion.png/9px-Potion.png) > (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/3/3d/Coin2.png/16px-Coin2.png)(http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/7/7a/Potion.png/9px-Potion.png) > (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/7/7a/Potion.png/9px-Potion.png).

(http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/3/32/Coin3.png/16px-Coin3.png)(http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/7/7a/Potion.png/9px-Potion.png) is not more expensive than (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/7/7d/Coin5.png/16px-Coin5.png), but (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/7/7d/Coin5.png/16px-Coin5.png) is also not more expensive than (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/3/32/Coin3.png/16px-Coin3.png)(http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/7/7a/Potion.png/9px-Potion.png). Neither costs more than the other.

So with Saboteur, if you trash a (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/6/6f/Coin6.png/16px-Coin6.png), the play gains a replacement costing at most (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/3/3d/Coin2.png/16px-Coin2.png) less, which is (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/2/2a/Coin4.png/16px-Coin4.png). So they can gain anything up to (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/2/2a/Coin4.png/16px-Coin4.png), just like with Ironworks. Anything with Potion in the cost does NOT cost "up to (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/2/2a/Coin4.png/16px-Coin4.png)", so you can't gain that. But if you trash a (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/6/6f/Coin6.png/16px-Coin6.png)(http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/7/7a/Potion.png/9px-Potion.png), they can gain anything costing up to (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/2/2a/Coin4.png/16px-Coin4.png)(http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/7/7a/Potion.png/9px-Potion.png), which could be a (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/2/2a/Coin4.png/16px-Coin4.png), a (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/3/3d/Coin2.png/16px-Coin2.png)(http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/7/7a/Potion.png/9px-Potion.png), or a (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/7/7a/Potion.png/9px-Potion.png); because those all cost less than or equal to (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/2/2a/Coin4.png/16px-Coin4.png)(http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/7/7a/Potion.png/9px-Potion.png).

This might be the "table" you are looking for:

Taken from this thread (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=2448.msg260246#msg260246).

This shows what things cost more than what other things. As you can see, there's no arrow between (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/3/32/Coin3.png/16px-Coin3.png)(http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/7/7a/Potion.png/9px-Potion.png) and (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/images/thumb/2/2a/Coin4.png/16px-Coin4.png), because neither costs more than the other.

Or, as I think I explained once before Debt was a thing,

"If having enough to buy A means you could buy B instead, then the cost of B is less than or equal to the cost of A."
