Tortured Temple offerings
You had some unfortunate draws, but I think you didn't build with enough economy to hit $5 (or even $4) reliably. The $5 cost cards (Torturer and City) are key. You can Borrow for them with a $4 hand, but that isn't sustainable - especially when your opponent might play Torturer. When you get attacked in the early game, you need to work off a 3-card hand, which makes Silver better than usual. The two big factors that slowed you down in the early-mid game were:
- Insufficient Silver. With a 2/5 opening, I would have opened with Borrow + Silver | Borrow + Torturer (Silver + Torturer is probably the best opening no matter the split). This gives you a very good chance to hit $5 on your Torturer hand. And I would have bought one more Silver on the next sub-$5 hand. On subsequent $3 hands, I would have switched to a single Market Square followed by Chariot Races.
- Temple too soon. Temple is a strong trasher, but it has terrible tempo. Games with Torturer are all about tempo. If you can get multiple Torturers in play, you'll have plenty of time to trash later. I would have bought two Torturers and two Cities (in that order) before considering buying a Temple. And even then, I wouldn't buy it over additional $5 cards for a while. A very minor bonus of delaying the Temple is the VP you can get on gain if your opponent gains and plays a Temple earlier.
amoffett11's opening: { Soothsayer + Silver + Chariot Race + Treasury + Temple } seems really weird to me. The early Soothsayer is really interesting. It strongly bucks the standard engine-building advice. The first couple times you play Soothsayer, you slow down yourself and accelerate your opponent. But it doesn't take long for the Golds and Curses to turn the tide in the midgame. I'm not sure if amoffett11 intended to transition into the engine from the get-go, or if the Soothsayer would have worked as well if vsiewnar had built better. But opening with a Gold-gainer and transitioning into an engine is definitely interesting, and an under-explored tactic for engine-building. I guess the early Silver and Treasury were purchased to try to get reliable $5+ hands as quickly as possible, and they helped. Given all the Gold, a Market Square would probably have been better than Chariot Race for amoffett11. I think the Temple was too early for amoffett11 - I probably would have borrowed for a Torturer, instead.

I do like Silver and Loan on the first two $3 hands here. I agree with Qvist's comment that getting Stables over second Junk Dealer would have been better. I'm not too fond of the Stonemason into Tournament and Throne Room buy. It would be good for your deck after you have a Province, but it slows down your ability to get the first Province. I would have liked to see either Stables or Gold (if you had trashed to 4 or more Coppers), instead. Bidding 1 debt on Mountain Pass was a big misplay. Looking at your starting hand, you know you're not hitting Province that turn, so bidding $6 still gives you a good chance at hitting Province on the subsequent turn. If singletee takes the $7 debt, that would have messed up his next turn, and possibly given you a chance to come back. (It goes without saying, you also had horrible luck with your Throne Room.)

I'm surprised you opened with Doctor on $4 over Steward in game 5; it's something I wouldn't have considered, because I'd be afraid of getting stuck at $2 hands for a while (like what happened to you, only with Doctor hiding at the bottom of shuffles). But the upside is very high if you get to trash an Estate with the overbuy. Maybe I'm too risk-averse. What motivated your choice here?

I realised shortly after bidding 1 that I should have bid 5 or 6 (6 sounds better); it was bad to bid only 1.
With regard to the Doctor, the first thought was starting with 4 instead of 3. It means I get to re-shuffle and have a deck of 10 cards, one of which is a Doctor i.e. no chance of it missing (sorry singletee). If you do hit Copper on the overpay and Doctor is on the bottom, then you can play it on Turn 3 naming Estate (guaranteed 1 hit) and buy Fortress/Steward (Turn 2 is Baths because you draw 3 Estates). I am ok with this variation (which I think is the worst). If your opponent's Stewards also come through on Turns 3 and 4 individually, then you may be behind a bit. I think it's about 10% for all this to happen (I think). Finally, there are also some tricks with Doctor that Steward doesn't have.
I am also petrified of the Doctor rolls but I more often roll the dice than not.

Is it crazy in game 3 to get a tunnel trashing hovel instead of a second silver? it doesnt make your deck worse and you'd probably get to activate it later on when you want some more money.

I'm pretty sure the strongest strategy on this board is:
Turn 1: Plan on Gear.
Turns 2-4: Buy Gear and trash Estate.
Turns 5-6: Buy Gold. (It's possible that you need to buy Gold on turn 3 or 4 and the third Gear on turn 5.)
Turns 7+: Buy Province when able, buy a third Gold on the first miss.
I tested this out and consistently got 5 Provinces by turn 12. After that, the deck starts to falter, but you can go in for Duchies or save up for Provinces depending on the game state. The engine can't slow this down (Pirate Ship is too slow), and isn't strong enough to compete.

I think you win regardless of whether you trigger that shuffle. You're correct that you should have spent one more turn trashing 3 Coppers with Count; it would have greatly increased the likelihood that you can pair your Legionary and Gold.

The lost Universities
I don't think it's realistic to expect University to help you win a key $5 split. Potion + University x2 is three buys, so you need more than three gains with those Universities before the pile empties to come out ahead. But it's actually worse for a couple reasons: (1) You're almost certainly not hitting $5 on an early turn when you play University, and (2) you'll get your first copy of the key card later, and those key cards (Minion in this case) help you to get more copies.

I had not thought about Gear and money at all that game! It does seem better than what either of us did.
Ah, I see, Minion was quite central and the early Universities can't make up ground fast enough. I will bear this in mind when faced with buying University or not.
