Title: RSS
Post by: theory on February 07, 2012, 02:13:01 pm
Does anyone else use the RSS feed on this forum?  Is anyone else having problems with it?  Or am I just imagining things?  On my Google Reader, it won't display new posts unless I actually click on the feed itself, and then it will display 5 recent posts and that's it.

Yep, the RSS and Atom feeds both are only outputting the 5 most recent 'starting' posts (i.e. not responses to posts).. not a very useful feed at all. Maybe Simple Machines has options for customizing the feeds?

Frakkin' Heisenbugs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heisenbug).  Now it is working perfectly fine for me.

Maybe it's a google reader problem?

Have you tried turning it off and then back on again?

The feed only contains the 5 most recent items by default.  Google Reader will show older items if it's been subscribing to the feed for you or someone else.  This bug was probably some Google Reader thing.

I was looking into this because I don't use Google Reader and 5 items isn't very much.  It's easy to miss things if there's a lot of activity.  For those in this boat, take the RSS URL and append ";limit=20" or however many posts you'd like to fetch at a time, e.g. http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?type=rss;action=.xml;limit=20 (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?type=rss;action=.xml;limit=20).  Try to keep the number low to keep load off the server, but high enough that your aggregator doesn't miss anything.

There's some other interesting stuff you can do with the feed URL to tailor it to your needs: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=25009.0 (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=25009.0)

Is this the same thing that feeds onto Dominion Strategy.com on the right hand side? because I find thats often NOT the latest comments posted when I follow them

BTW this is fixed now.  If you subscribe to the forum RSS you may want to consider unsubscribing and using the new footer link (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?action=.xml;type=rss;limit=100) instead.

This is just because it takes a little while to update the blog page.
