Hey look here is a simple tournament aiming to explore a part of the Dominion metagame that's often left untouched: single expansion kingdoms.
Basicaly, the premise of this tournament is that you will play one game using one set (or the mini sets) from each of 6 sets. Before playing, each player will veto a set, leaving six sets. The six sets remaining are each played with in 1 game each by the two players. This will test your knowledge of sets in isolation as well as your ability to recognize synergy within a set that isn't necessarily highlighted otherwise.
HERE IS THE BRACKET: http://challonge.com/dominion_monoset
Current Pending Games (Bolded game means someone is waiting on you to continue):
Awaclus vs. The Do-Operator
Official Rules:
- 16 players, double elimination
- 3 starts each; play random starts until someone hits 3, then resign until the other player starts blah blah you've all done this before
- Players will be seeded by Iso rank, in a bracket that starts with 1v16, 2v15... etc.
- Before starting the match, each player, starting with the low seed, will veto a set, leaving six sets. Each of the six games will feature Kingdoms and rule modifiers exclusive to one of the six sets remaining.
- If there are any disputes as to the order of the sets played, the first set played shall be decided randomly, and after each game, the loser of the previous game will pick the next set.
- The sets that players will play from / veto are below.
-- Base Set
-- Intrigue
-- Seaside
-- Prosperity (Platinum / Colony on)
-- Hinterlands
-- Dark Ages (Shelters on)
-- Adventures
-- Cornucopia / Guilds (treat as one set)
(note that Alchemy is not on this list at all - will explain elsewhere)
- In the event of a 3-3 tie, a seventh game will be played, with random start, where the set used is the set the HIGHER seed vetoed.
- If the seventh game ends in a tie according to the Dominion rules, the player who went second advances.
- I'm hoping we don't need strict formal deadlines and can just advance between rounds when ready, but if you don't contact your opponent within a week of your matchup being available you'll be subbed out (early rounds) or forefeit (later rounds). If you are holding the tournament up we'll talk. Don't be a dick. We want this done before ShIT is out.
- When posting results, please also include the sets vetoed, just for curiosity's sake.
You're still welcome to sign up as alternates if you want.

Think of it less as "what a piece of ShIT" and more "The new Dominion is the ShIT!"
I'm not attached to the acronym if it bothers people, but it's memorable and easy to type.

I think you should give the lower seed some kind of power though. Either choosing second or getting his set not played, both just seems to tilt it so strongly towards the higher seed in close games.

I'll change it so in game 7 the top seed's veto is played instead.
If this doesn't get to 32 by the middle / end of next week maybe I'll switch it to 16/double elim?

Sounds interesting. I want to say in, but my schedule is busy right now
-
I only own Base, Intrigue, Seaside, Prosperity, Dark Ages, Guilds
and I think one more small expansion (not sure) EDIT: no, just the ones I mentioned by name. Can I join?
-
Shoot, I don't own all sets either. Judge!
-
I'd say go ahead and join, but if you are paired with someone else missing sets you can only veto sets you both don't have (unless between the two of you, you are missing only one set).
-
Do you think we'll make it to 16 or do we just go head and play our first round? (latecomer could play against one of the byes)
-
I'll figure this out tonight when I get home. Maybe some kind of wacky double elim format where first round byes go to players who haven't signed up yet. Definitely want to get this started and do double elim though.

/in unless it's not too late
Nah, signups don't end until I get home and have time to deal with this thread, at the very least. Probably some mechanism to sign up late will persist.
-
So if we count Awaclus, we have 14 here. I am thinking we do 16 person, double elimination, and we leave 2 slots open (the 8th and 9th seeds). If no one takes them, the winner of 1v16 gets a second round bye. If two more people sign up, yay, there's room for them to play!
I'll throw a bracket together tonight, probably. Just gotta get a bunch of Iso ranks.
-
Here's the bracket (subject to change if something goes wrong or if someone drops / adds). PMs to remind people this exist go out tomorrow. Good luck in Round 1!

What should be the setup for events in adventures: 2 or random?

I am willing to join if anybody else does.
-
What should be the setup for events in adventures: 2 or random?
Random, but the result will almost always be 2 anyway, so basically the same.
-
Lalight and I played our match and I won 4-3.
Lalight banned Hinterlands, I banned Dark Ages
We picked the order of the sets since there were no rules about it:
I picked Guilds/Cornucopia and lost.
Lalight picked Base and lost.
I picked Seaside and lost
Lalight picked Intrigue and lost.
I picked Adventures and lost.
Lalight "picked" Prosperity and lost.
Naturally, I had to win DA since it was my ban ;) Ignoring Rebuild and Culist, hooray.

Missed that rule, whoops. For now let's say the loser of the previous match picks the next match from here on out, unless both players agree to alternative rules. This lets the existing match stand and offers a guideline for future debates.
I'll update the OP with this, the brackets, matchups, and send out PMs throughout the day. Jobs and shit.
I am willing to join if anybody else does.
If no one else joins by the time everyone gets to round 2, you'll be 8th seed with a first round bye.

Chris, would you please assign seed numbers to diedre91 and me, so we don't do everything the wrong way round? :)
-
If I am reading the leaderboard right, tufftaeh is #8 and diedre91 is #9 seed. Will update the bracket to match this.

Also, someone will always be waiting for every match to finish from here on out in the tournament, so get those last ones done !

Hey,
I believe the wishing wells should be gained on this board, otherwise you lose. The thing is that you both chose the wrong card to trash here. Wishing wells work well only when their density in your deck is very high, or when there are 2 cards in the deck. This means that you should clearly prefer the trading post as it gets out of the way 2 cards and always give you the same card. Ideally you end up with wishing wells and silvers here before you green. There are other cards of course to consider here and maybe a late upgrade to turn the post into a gold and the ironworks in a duchy is good, depending on how fast your deck cycles, or in other words on how many wells you have and how well they work. But you should expect that after 3 provinces your deck will not cycle good if you split the wells. With all the wells and just silvers, this should not be a problem though.
-
I think in that game I would have opened Silver / IW, get Wishing Wells every time with Ironworks, and either Upgrade or Trading Post. I'm inclined to say Upgrade so you can make Bridge your terminal and double Province with a deck that basically becomes Silver, WW, Bridge by the end of the game.
You don't need a two card deck for Wishing Well to be worth it; it doesn't always have to draw 2 cards to be good. But there is benefit to a more monolithic deck and I don't think there is much to make a more complex engine worth it. Sab isn't a huge deal; Ironworks just gains whatever component you lost during greening.

I agree that wishing well density is crucial to the deck functioning. I like opening Wishing Well/Wishing Well into 2-3 upgrades and piling the wishing wells. After getting thin with upgrades, they can upgrade themselves into gold before greening.

I agree that wishing well density is crucial to the deck functioning. I like opening Wishing Well/Wishing Well into 2-3 upgrades and piling the wishing wells. After getting thin with upgrades, they can upgrade themselves into gold before greening.

Very nice, thanks for the log :)
The circulation that the wishing wells offer ensure that you play the upgrades often enough!
I was wondering about getting more golds after you double province once though. Is it clear to you that they help the deck? My initial feeling is that by keeping less gold your wishing wells can succeed more often by wishing for them selves and therefore you have better reliability.
Maybe though as you want only 3 golds for a province you buy the golds as finding one of them is 1/3 of your mission, but if you were having silvers in your deck instead of golds you would not buy more and keep their number to the minimum (4), since now finding a silver is only a fourth of your goal, or would you still buy silvers?
