Title: Playing speed
Post by: Aleimon Thimble on May 16, 2016, 05:57:10 pm
It happens quite often that I'm being called out in the chat while playing online, because my opponent feels I'm playing too slowly. Of course, this is especially the case on heavy, difficult engine boards. It kind of annoys me, because I just want to think through my moves; speeding is rarely a good idea if you're trying to improve your play, right? Dominion is a strategy game, just like chess, for example, and you don't want to be called out on being a slow player if you're playing chess either. On the other hand, chess usually has a clock, to limit your thinking time, so even in strategy games you're clearly not meant to think endlessly. But I don't think I play THAT slowly...

Who else has experience with this conundrum?

Yeah I think people who call you out for playing slow are just the worst.

I mean sure you shouldn't actually slowroll, but that's a different thing.

I play pretty quickly if it's not a league game or something. But I would never call someone else out for slow play. I mean, come on, it's an online game, if you're bored just watch a YouTube video or something while you wait. That's a major advantage over chess.

I know this since i also like to think things through and not rush decisions that might seem obvious. Often it is worth it to take your time in Dominion especially now with Adventures that games are getting more and more complex. For me thats also what dominion is about, that on nice boards you have a lot of small decisions that on their own dont seem to make much of a difference first but really add up long term. So trying to grasp every little aspect is really what makes you a better Player.
I wouldnt listen to your opponents calling you slow, as long as youre not delibarately slowplaying you have every right to take the time MF has given you for your turns and they dont have to play a rematch if that is too slow for them.

By not properly analyzing a board, I completely missed Feodum/Raid. On another board, I missed Bishop/Fortress. Both of these games were within the last couple of days. So, my advice, take your time, especially when analyzing the board

Sometimes I ask what's up in the chat if an opponent stalls, because I don't know if they're disconnected or just thinking.  No pressure intended!

I play a lot on public transport, if I'm near the end of my journey it's quite frustrating having to resign when the match is evenly split.

I never play on public transport for this reason. Or on any other public wifi. Or when I'm at my mother's house, who for some reason has a rather unstable internet connection. Of course, the client still causes trouble from time to time, can't get rid of internet issues completely...

Sometimes I take a shower while it's my turn. People complain about how long it takes, but how could they not understand that I just want to be clean?

Pro mode: play Dominion while in the shower. You just need one of them fancy waterproof tablets!

People should take as much time as they need; unfortunately they often take much more than that.

This is one of the reasons I think we need a blacklist feature: so that all those speed freaks can block me and relieve me from the pain of seeing a question mark or three pop up every time I stop to think.

That's to be expected though, depending on how you define "need". I'll often have a gut decision, spend some time thinking about it, and go with that gut decision because I can't find anything better. Technically, I only needed 5 seconds and took more, but this isn't bad play, it's careful play.
