Title: Flip Out: A game for 8 players
Post by: iguanaiguana on April 19, 2016, 11:21:23 am
Flip Out: Flagrantly stolen from Forum Survivor Season 3 (http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=13580.msg584690#msg584690)

Flip out is a game where players stand outside of an 11x11 grid of tiles (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1bOvWeeRkcqiNrN1O5hjTyxjMeJB_nnJMlJBXISj2RD0/edit?usp=sharing). On their first turn, each player will move onto the grid of red tiles. On each turn after that, each player will move one square onto a red tile in any direction that is open to them, including diagonally.  When the player moves, the tile they just left flips and becomes yellow. Players may not move onto yellow tiles. If you cannot make a legal move on your turn, you are out of the game.  The last player who can make a legal move on their turn wins the game. If two or more players have both made the same number of moves through the course of the game, it will result in a tie and shared win between those players.

In addition, each player may exercise a special power once during the game on their turn. After using their power, in addition to whatever move they make that turn, the player can flip any one tile on the board. This means either from red to yellow OR yellow to red.  However, players cannot flip squares people are standing on. This action can be taken either directly before or directly after the player's move on that turn.

Here's how turns in the game will look:

When it's your turn, post in this thread, in bold what square in the grid you are moving onto, and the name of the next person to move. Also, post how you choose to use your power if you want to use your power that turn. In the spreadsheet, move your name to the appropriate cell and change the color of your previous cell yellow. If you use your power during your turn, erase your name from the power bank at the top of the sheet and flip the tile you want to flip.

If you do not make a move within 24 hours of your turn, a random move will be assigned to you and the next player's turn will begin. Random moves will be made by the moderator at the moderator's convenience (IE: I'm not getting up in the middle of the night to assign a random move to someone). Players are still eligible to make their own move until the moderator makes a random move for them, even after the 24 hour window has passed.

Sign up order will determine player order for the game.

1. Teamlyle
2. Roadrunner
3. Haddock
4. Ghostofmars
5. Jimmmmm
6. Faust
7. LaLight
8. TwistedArcher

Differences from the forum survivor version of the game:

The ninth player, who starts in the middle, has been removed and this version of the game is for 8 players. However, the empty square in the middle of the board is still there. Starting positions have also been moved one square toward the center of the board to compensate for the missing player in the middle.

All players have a one-shot power, whereas in the survivor version only players who spent energy get to use a power.

Everyone is theoretically trying to win  :P

Hmm...

Any reason why no one (minus teamlyle) wants to play?

Turns in this game take about a minute, so the time commitment is really small.

I understand why forum survivor people would not want to play two games of this simultaneously. I did think others might give it a go.

Hm, okay.

This game can begin now.

Player order is original sign up order and you can see it in the first post. We start with Teamlyle.

After you make your move on the spreadsheet, post what hex you moved onto and the next player to move. So Teamlyle's first move and post might look like "Move to E4, Roadrunner's turn."

If anyone doesn't make a move within 24 hours, I'll make a random move for them, so that the game can keep going. If it becomes clear that one player is completely absent, I'll take their place.

You guys can largely direct this challenge yourselves. I'll just keep an eye on things to make sure everyone is making legal moves.

I never got a re-in from Jim. If you want to play, you can have his spot. Otherwise, I'll take his spot if he doesn't show up to play on or before his turn.

Rules question: Can two players share the same space? The rules as written seem to allow it because you only flip the tile after you left.

Player turn order follows the names in the power bank from left to right each round. Each player should always signal the same person each turn that it is now their turn.

That being said, looks like ghost of Mars sorted it and we are good to go again.

I checked the spreadsheet history. Teamlyle was on F6 last turn so he must move somewhere else. Then RR should decide if he still wants to move to H8.

I believe it's clear who wins, yes.  But I'd like a whole podium. :P  I think I could probably give a 1-2-3 now, but I may have miscalculated.

I vote to fast-forwarding the game to the end. The only power left is Teamlyle's one who is already guaranteed to win. Unless they want to use their power to benefit of someone else, it is now clear what will happen. I've added my conditional* movements for the next 8 turns to the map. *The condition is that Teamlyle does not interfere with the movement of anyone else.

I've gone ahead and filled in the future moves.
I hope noone minds.  But that decides it.  I make it:

1. teamlyle (by quite a margin - congrats!)
2. Haddock
3. ghostofmars
4th= Jimmmmm
4th= Lalight
4th= Roadrunner
7. TwistedArcher
8. pacovf

Someone might wanna double-check that.

EDIT: Double-checked the rules and Jimmmmm and Lalight should be tied, I think.
