This is a redone version of my best village poll. Some errors were called to my attention, and I thought I should fix the poll. Probably most of you don't want to vote on the practically the same poll twice :), but some people wanted to change their votes, and others wanted me to add more pseudo and conditional villages. Now you can also change your vote, so if you want me to add a card, I can do that and you can change your vote and vote for it.
I did not add the Throne Room variants because I think they are quite different from villages. They just allow other cards to be played like villages.

Not at all! You don't necessarily even need any cards with +1 Action for Throne Room to be a village. Start a hand with Throne Room / Throne Room / Smithy and keep the chain going with more throne rooms and payload / draw.
-
Also, since some people voted the wrong card by accident, and many wanted more cards added, I will be closing the original best village poll, but leave this one open.

Good point! Never thought of that. If lots of people vote your comment up, or have similar posts, I will add them. However, once KC is added, almost everyone will vote for it :).

Which is why the term "splitter" is preferable, because it is clearly inclusive.
-
Yeah, I changed my vote now that Herald's there. I'm a huge fan of Herald.
If you fail to hit an Action, it's a vanilla cantrip - weak, but the chance of that happening decreases quickly if you have any decent trashing (which you probably have or you wouldn't be so inclined to build an engine), and it least it won't ever hurt your deck (unlike Throne Room, for example). If you DO hit an Action, it's +2 cards/+2 Actions - pretty damn ridiculous for $4. Lost City costs $5 and has a penalty. If you hit another Herald, it's at least +3 cards/+3 Actions. Holy balls.

One problem with Herald is that you need to pay attention in which order you play or actions. Herald chains can end abruptly if you hit a terminal action. Without villages, I think heralds are a bit to erratic for my liking ;).
-
Champion never fails to give you +actions, so that's cool.
-
True, but it can take a while to get. And if you have a deck with lots of + actions, the + 1 action sometimes doesn't really matter.
I want to try Champion with Diadem.

It doesn't end if the terminal action draws cards. Herald into Smithy is one of the best outcomes you can get.
-
Um, are you thinking of Golem? Herald always gives an action.
Golem is missing in the listby the way. Definitely calls for a "what does everyone think is the best village 3.0" thread.

Right, I've been playing Herald wrong all along :-[. I guess that's why we have these discussions.

As usual, if enough people say the same thing or vote up your comment, I will add Golem to this poll. Now everyone can change their votes, too.

For cost/effectiveness, Fishing Village is undisputed. Yes, Champion is amazing. Yes, Border Village is amazing. Yes, Lost Arts, Bazaar, Herald, Ironmonger, all these Village cards are amazing. But they're also expensive and/or inconvenient to get or set up to become effective. For the cost, Fishing Village blows all of these cards out of the water. It's not even close.

You didn't mention Wandering Minstrel as being amazing. You've made a powerful enemy, Seprix!
Also, Border Village and Bazaar are pretty expensive for villages, but what is inconvenient about Ironmonger or Herald?

Ironmonger might miss, it's not always a village until you start thinning out, and that takes work.
Herald might miss, it's not always a village until you start thinning out, and that takes work.
They're both great cards, but I'm thinking more in terms of a reliable village you can use instantly.
Wandering Minstrel is pretty great though.

Would you mind making your polls public?
Seeing who voted what is much more interesting than some anonymous average, and it's not as if knowing that Mic loves Squire is going to affect my choice.
-
Would you mind making your polls public?
Thank you for your suggestion. It will be addressed at "What does everyone think is the best village 6.0".

Border Village is not expensive, it doesn't even cost a buy and it only costs $1 in dollars, too. Fishing Village costs $3 and a buy, and on the turn you play it, it's a super crappy card (although it is pretty good the turn after that).

I will do that on the next poll. I just thought some people might prefer to keep their votes a secret, but now they have been warned :).

Unless you want to gain a 4 cost. Or a 3 cost. Or a 2 cost. Yes, yes, edgecase.
The $6 spike in cost is still pretty annoying. It's worth getting a free village with whatever you really wanted that's worth $5, but again, it's still annoying when you only hit $5 instead, and BV is the ONLY village on the board.
-
I voted Lost Arts. FV is great, but I feel LA might in the long run be seen add the strongest village variant.
-

In terms of treating Lost Arts as a village - are we only considering the case where LA is converting a cantrip into a village? Because making a draw card nonterminal doesn't increase your terminal space and allow you to play multiple terminal actions - though it obviously helps you use your terminal space on something other than draw. I wouldn't call that the same thing as a village precisely.
-
Feature request for 7.0: allow two votes, one for 'best' and one for 'favorite'.
I voted Fishing Village as the best one. Hard to say between Fishing Village and Wandering Minstrel.
Though, for favorite village I have to go with Ironmonger; I just like it more than everything else. Herald is probably 2nd place, but that's more likely because I love seeing my whole deck fly out on fast mode on Goko.
-
Why isn't Prince or Teacher on the list? And what about Outpost, Mission, and Possession?
-
I don't think Lost Arts and Champion belong in this poll. They feel and play even less like villages than the TR-variants, same goes for Teacher. Those cards being included here just warps the whole voting.
And what about Outpost, Mission, and Possession?
Those aren't villages.
-
Just put all the cards in the poll.

Yeah, it looks like the definition of "village" is getting broader by the minute.

Apparently, I've let so many cards into the poll that it seems like a general "what is the best card in Dominion" poll.

I think the introduction paragraph is misleading because while "village" can be used interchangeably with "splitter", "splitter" always means every card that is capable of splitting an action into two or more actions, whereas "village" usually has a narrower definition which varies depending on who you ask.

Honestly, I don't know who these people are that use "splitter", other than you. Everyone else I talk to or who I watch stream just calls them "villages".

Well, if you search for "splitter" on f.ds, you'll find a lot of posts other than mine, although it is true that I'm way overrepresented in those search results.

Good point! Never thought of that. If lots of people vote your comment up, or have similar posts, I will add them. However, once KC is added, almost everyone will vote for it :).
Well that's hardly an argument against having a proper list of villages, is it.
I personally count Throne Rooms as full-on villages, when counting villages, to make sure I have a good number of villages. They can be harder to use but then so can some of the other villages.

If you're worried about everyone voting for King's Court, you could always change the question to "What is the best village other than King's Court"?

To make this poll worthwhile, we need subdivisions of villages and then see which is the best in which category?
Another suggestion would be: vote for the top x (3-5-7) strongest villages. Maybe we see some diversity there.

Dude. We could have a bracket. Pair off the villages, vote for best in each pair; then do the winning pairs and so on.

Should Prince be added?

So it looks like everyone wants brackets. But how should they be organized? I'm willing to prepare something like this, but I need some more details, because currently without any details I can't really do anything. Any ideas are welcome. I do enjoy making these polls, and brackets sound fun.
-

There are 39 options. If I were you I'd knock off seven villages that got no votes, then have a bracket like the NCAA.
By 'like the NCAA,' you should put the cards in order from most to least votes. Have a coin flip for ties. You'll have a list like this:
Village 1
Village 2
Village 3
Village 4
V5
V6
V7
...
V31
V32
Take all the odd numbers and put them in the Scout division. The evens should go in the other division. Then google a NCAA bracket. You have the 16 seed play the one seed and the 8 seed play the 9 seed. The winner of the 16 vs. 1 plays the winner of the 8 vs. 9. Villages slowly get eliminated until the best from the Scout division and the other division play each other in the final poll.
I hope that makes sense!
-

If we want to do it legit, you want to make sure the 'strongest' villages don't immediately meet each other in a straight competition.

Just to make sure you know, I'm pretty sure Donald and the others were kidding when they said they wanted brackets.
OTOH, if we do do brackets, we should have good players play each other with two villages in the kingdom, and one player is only allowed to use one village, and the other player uses the other village...

I'm not sure that's a good comparison. It's hard to compare say, Nobles and Hamlet, because of their dramatically different price points. Also, some villages are close enough that the winning player will probably be determined more by strategy choice and shuffle luck than by the superiority of the village.
Also, the village's utility will be determined by the kingdom. Fishing village is obviously stronger than Vanilla Village in kingdoms with Watchtower or Library as the only source of draw. Squire might be more useful because you can trash it get Familiars or Goons than from any ability to enable an engine. Fortress is pretty weak on boards without trashing, but can be the centerpiece of a winning strategy with Bishop on the board.
Thus, on a given board, forcing one player to go for a particular village rather than another might tip the game to one of the players regardless of the village's overall value.
A better idea would be to have the players play two identical kingdoms, one with one village and one with the other, without any cards that will have a particularly strong interaction with one village versus the other (I.e. don't compare Hamlet to Squire when Tunnel is on the board, or when trashing + strong attacks are available). Then compare how quickly the winning player won, the margin of victory, etc to see which produced the more efficient engine.
-
Just to make sure you know, I'm pretty sure Donald and the others were kidding when they said they wanted brackets.
Yeah who would want to do this bracket nonsense. It's super lame.
I took off the cards you can't buy (Necropolis, Madman, Disciple, Champion), Lost Arts since it's an Event, Tribute because who likes that and your opponent can just buy treasures and VP so there, and Prince because I was still a card over.
I put the other cards in a rough order for a vote on favorite, rather than most powerful, man we have Qvist's polls for power level, just look at what order they ended up in if you want. Anyway favorite is more interesting to me so there you go.

I can no longer speak for anyone else, but for my part I was not at all serious when I said this:
OTOH, if we do do brackets, we should have good players play each other with two villages in the kingdom, and one player is only allowed to use one village, and the other player uses the other village...
The rest of you are welcome to your brackets or whatever...

Yessir. I can discuss reasons for choosing one card over another if people really want to see that.
Let the Village Madness Brackets begin.

Match 1 (KC v Walled Village): More fun.
Match 2 (Crossroads v Mining Village): More fun
Match 3 (Herald v Farming Village: Herald is enjoyable when it hits, but man I hate the swinginess. Farming village is great.
Match 4 (Hamlet v Plaza: Easy choice for me.
Match 5 (Royal Carriage v Village): We state this without further justification.
Match 6 (Throne Room v Squire): Fun
Match 7 (Fortress v Festival): Festival is sweet.
Match 8 (Fishing Village v Port): Port is fun, FV is better.
Match 9 (Procession v Shanty Town): I like the idea of a draw that only occurs when a card is useless.
Match 10 (Ironmonger v University): University is a wonderful oxymoron, best in games without potions.
Match 11 (Wandering Minstrel v Bandit Camp): No justification.
Match 12 (Inn v Lost City): I like the village that can help drawing the deck. It's fun. The Inn I find strangely frustrating.
Match 13 (Border Village v Bazaar): Border Village allows you to ramp up an engine. I like Bazaar in games with new people, as it's a village that provides more than the 40 actions the new player can never use.
Match 14 (Golem v Nobles): Golem's are fun, Nobles are also fun.
Match 15 (City v Worker's Village): It's always enjoyable watching people try and empty the second pile after a 7-3 split with no assistance from you as you get ready to green.
Match 16 (CoTR v Native Village): I love Native Village, despite its swing - I love feeling like being like "The natives stole a province *shrugs*" then a turn later being angry they kidnapped a smithy. But I played a game with CoTR last week and it was pretty sweet.
Favourite is interesting. Strongest would certainly result in different answers, and less exciting ones.

What we could do is create a poll, with everyone allowed enough votes so that they could vote for one card from each bracket. I would be willing to create the poll. The poll would be visible to anyone, so anyone who votes all their votes for one card would have their access votes discounted.

KC, RC, TR don't really need further comment. I really enjoy Mining Village, but I suspect I buy it as one-shot silver a little too often. I love Worker's Village for reasons I can't explain, maybe the art? I rarely use all those buys anyway. Nobles takes me back to when I played lots of Dominion at college, we would often start turns by slamming two Nobles down from our hand saying 'dub nobs'. I voted against Procession because I'm awful with the card. Festival is again a nostalgia card from the base set days. In NV/CotR, I went with the card that is still novel to me rather than the one that I've played a bunch with; I don't feel that strongly about either to be honest.
-
I was voting by best, but if we're going favorites, I should vote again, I guess.
-
I was voting by best, but if we're going favorites, I should vote again, I guess.
I was also voting for best. I think voting for best makes more sense, because it is hard to come to a consensus on "what is everyone's favorite village"
-
Also, who will count up the votes at the end?

My first instinct on Plaza v Hamlet was to go Hamlet, because you can get the buy from it. Plaza can even out buys, though, which can be pretty key. Maybe Squire v. Throne Room is iffy; I think I go for Squire more often than Throne Room. Nobles v. Golem is a bit of a tossup.. Golem is more fun. Nobles is more reliable, and has VP.

I put the other cards in a rough order for a vote on favorite, rather than most powerful, man we have Qvist's polls for power level, just look at what order they ended up in if you want. Anyway favorite is more interesting to me so there you go.
I went for Donald's explanation. On the basis that his description seems legit.

Only hard one for me was Border Village vs Bazaar. I mean, I like both of them, but for totally different reasons.
Also, I really really like Worker's Village. I hate stopping my building of an engine to pick up +Buy. So since it comes from my village, it's great! (and by extension Hamlet, and to a lesser degree Festival).

I tend to not like cards that are mostly auto-buys. That's probably why I chose Bazaar over Border Village, too.

ok, hard to resist. To me 'best' means most well designed, which is usually pretty much the same as most fun, which in turn is pretty much the same as favorite.

Mostly the expected-to-be-more-popular card won. I'm guessing Procession lost because make brain hurt. And Shanty Town is classic in its way. Of course I like almost everything because I had to to put them into the sets.
I am calling four ties.
7 Hamlet x9 / 8 Plaza x9
These are both quiet but neat cards that involve discarding. Man. I'm going to give it to Plaza on the grounds that the tokens handle the tracking there, you are not figuring out how to tilt your Hamlets to let you know just what you got from them.
11 Throne Room x9 / 12 Squire x9
Throne was once one of the coolest cards in the game. For me it was always just a rules-on-cards staple though; a basic effect you can do in game after game, almost without regard to what the rest of the game is. At this point there are more Thrones while Squire is more distinct. Squire.
23 Inn x9 / 24 Lost City x9
Inn: You shuffle all of your actions into your deck and your next turn takes forever, including time spent discarding to Inns. Lost City: You give me a card. Lost City.
27 Golem x9 / 28 Nobles x9
Nobles is the poster child for Intrigue, while Golem is from that set with slow turns and that 2nd resource people don't like. But Nobles lets you down, it costs a million but you desperately need the village and then you end up playing Nobles for Actions, Nobles for Cards, look it's like I played a Lab. Golem meanwhile never lets you down, it's good times even when it hits your Remodel you didn't want to play this turn. Golem.

Didn't vote in Round 1 but let's give this another shot!
1 King's Court -> A bit overpowered, but it opens up so many options that would otherwise never be there. Crossroads just messes with your handsize a lot of the time.
3 Crossroads
5 Herald -> Probably my favorite card in the entire game, as I've said before. No contest.
8 Plaza
9 Royal Carriage -> I don't really care for either, but Royal Carriage is at least a Throne variant, so there's that.
12 Squire
13 Fortress -> I like the cool tricks with Procession and TFB.
15 Fishing Village
18 Shanty Town
19 Ironmonger -> Shanty Town is just a dead card if you draw it with exactly 1 terminal. Ironmonger always does something.
21 Wandering Minstrel -> I hate giving my opponent a card.
24 Lost City
25 Border Village
27 Golem -> Might lead to explosive engines even without trashing. I like that.
29 City -> Somewhat difficult at times because you have to ask yourself, is it a trap or not? And then there's the endgame dance of not wanting to give your opponent the megaturn by buying the last City. Interesting enough.

Fortress hitting Fishing village second round is a tough draw. Sometimes you get a bad seed. Both I really like. Fortress is fun, especially with trash for benefit stuff, but edge to Fishing Village for uber engine enablement.

27 Golem
If we're going for IRL play, make me vote Border Village instead. Golem is pretty fun online though.
29 City
32 Coin of the Realm
While it doesn't come into play often, I like City much more when it does kick in. Coin of the Realm is just an extra copper in your deck, though admittedly it's great for remodeling Coppers as a way to keep them out of your deck forever.

9 Royal Carriage

This is about the best village, and of all the Throne Rooms, Royal Carriage is probably the worst village because you can't call it on Royal Carriage. I'd say as a card it's better than Squire though.
13 Fortress
15 Fishing Village
Fortress is part of Bishop/Fortress, which is so satisfying.
18 Shanty Town
19 Ironmonger
21 Wandering Minstrel
24 Lost City
My Dominion group came up with a dirty joke having to do with Wandering Minstrel and one of its functions (besides being a village), and that's all I can think of when I play the card now. That doesn't have anything to do with this, though, I just think Lost City is funner.
25 Border Village
27 Golem
Golem is annoyingly expensive, Border Village is just expensive. Not to say I hate potions, but Golem is a bit much for a village.

-
I wish I had gotten my vote in yesterday as I would have broken half the ties differently :(
1 King's Court
3 Crossroads
I think the seeding is all kinds of fucked up for this bracket if (1) Crossroads, a terrible Village, is the 3 seed and (2) 1v3 is an eigthfinals matchup. Anyhow this isn't even close.
5 Herald
8 Plaza
Herald is definitely a better card, but in terms of being a Village, I like Plaza more, because those Coin tokens are super nice and you aren't necessarily forced to play Actions you didn't want to play.
9 Royal Carriage
12 Squire
Oh come on, why isn't this RC versus Throne Room? Then it wouldn't even be close. RC is the better card, but Throne Room is way better at being a Village. In this case, Squire is better at being a village than RC, even though Squire isn't a great village and RC is an excellent card all around.
13 Fortress
15 Fishing Village
Fortress is a fun gimmick when you get to use it, but too often it is just a $4 Village. Fishing Village is nearly always powerful, even if you don't need all of the Actions it gives you. Two turns of +Action is too good.
18 Shanty Town
19 Ironmonger
This is bending my "what's better at being a Village" rule a bit, and also bending my "Don't vote for what is essentially a $4 Village" rule as well, but Ironmonger is rare among Villages in that it is pretty good in the early game and it sifts a little. Shanty Town can be good early game too, but oftentimes that lack of draw really hurts.
21 Wandering Minstrel
24 Lost City
Lost City is super great, but without trashing you would really prefer Wandering Minstrel. It has a dramatic effect on reliability of engines and allows you to fire several turns before you're supposed to be able to fire. The cheaper cost and lack of giving your opponents a boost helps too. Not that Lost City is bad, this is just a tragic matchup.
25 Border Village
27 Golem
Okay Golem is cool but it is not very reliable at being a Village and it has that awkward thing where it becomes shitty when your deck is empty like Ironmonger does - but you have less control of your draw with it. Border Village is a better Village, I love picking them up. Especially when you can trash them.
29 City
32 Coin of the Realm
City is cool, but it is pretty bad at actually being a Village. COTR is a double Village that you only use when you need it. Fuckin' sweet if you ask me.
-
Actually, it's about favorite +Action cards in Dominion.
-
I think the seeding is all kinds of fucked up for this bracket if (1) Crossroads, a terrible Village, is the 3 seed and (2) 1v3 is an eigthfinals matchup. Anyhow this isn't even close.
That's not really how seeding works. The original enumeration 1, 2, ... that Donald gave isn't the same as the seed number, because those would have matches something like 1vN, ..., (N-1)v2
So, Crossroads was seeded pretty low
-
Round 2:
1 King's Court
3 Crossroads
Crossroads wins because it leads to unique deck considerations. It's not simply "more villages = more terminal actions", it's "I can play three terminal actions, what are they going to be?" Also, sometimes you can use it for draw. KC's potential swinginess makes it feel bad sometimes, despite feeling absolutely amazing when it works.
5 Herald
8 Plaza
I like both but overbuy tricks on Herald are more interesting to me than discard tricks on Plaza.
9 Royal Carriage
12 Squire
I like how squire might play so differently in different kingdoms.
13 Fortress
15 Fishing Village
18 Shanty Town
19 Ironmonger
Tough one for me.
21 Wandering Minstrel
24 Lost City
Feels weird that a card I didn't vote for last round beats one that I did vote for. Oh well.
25 Border Village
27 Golem
29 City

I guess you quoted and modified my post because you are mostly voting the same as me? But leaving it in a quote makes it confusing. I'd suggest editing to remove the quote tags, lest your votes be skipped.

1. All villages combo with Watchtower, even the ones I chose.
2. CoTR combos with Watchtower way more than City.
3. Maybe I like Watchtower because it makes cards which I otherwise don't like so much awesome?

Close call between Herald and Plaza. Herald is maybe a little too strong and it's full of text, but it's a fun deck to build and the overpay is something I'd like to get better at using. Hmm, in retrospect, it would be easier to use if the pile didn't get bought out instantly.
I've been growing fonder of Shanty Town lately.
-
I don't even.... What is happening?
There's no need for all this convoluted nonsense. Fishing Village is a Duration Village with Actions and Coins for cheap. That's clearly the best village. ;)

I'll give it a full day. That feels friendly to all time zones and like plenty of time. So, I'll tally it up in ~9 hours.
If you are desperate to pick between pairs of Dominion cards, you could start up another bracket for something.

1 King's Court
3 Crossroads
i'm sort of thinking of these from a kingdom design standpoint. crossroads allows for kingdoms where you can play precisely three terminals; that is a game that not really any other card allows.
5 Herald
8 Plaza
why would it matter that much to send my coppers to the aether? well, surprise, there's a bunch of reasons.
9 Royal Carriage
12 Squire
i have a soft spot for cards that do both actions and buys (rip worker's) and also, if squire is the only village, then it's a choice rather than an incidental thing.
13 Fortress
15 Fishing Village
fortress makes for moderately strong and open-ended combos a very small amount of the time (<3 forge) whereas fishing village is a declaration of, okay this is a game where the whole village thing isn't as much of a concern, try the other stuff.
18 Shanty Town
19 Ironmonger
i shant! how do you even play around that, asks new players, and then eventually they sorta stop asking.
21 Wandering Minstrel
24 Lost City
lost city hasn't grown on me yet. minstrel opens up kingdoms where it's easier to just get action cards now.
25 Border Village
27 Golem
village +$5 now just costs $6. fun to make a kingdoms with this and no buys. sometimes you have a hand with only nobles, smithy, and golem, and too often the better bet is, golem, here goes nothing.
29 City
32 Coin of the Realm
coin of the realm offers some sort of new dynamic that i'm not sure exactly what it is yet. but it's cool

King's Court has fallen. Last round, 5 of the 8 cards were ones seeded as if they would make it that far; now only Border Village remains. And it's the only one in the top 4 that actually gives you +1 Card and +2 Actions. Fishing Village at least gives you +2 Actions, and then the other two have to reveal an Action or they don't even Village. But here they are and I guess we're all learning something today.

I gave it an extra day because of the weekend. It's close and well someone is bound to be disappointed but it's time to move on.
Fishing Village. If I close my eyes, I can see it so clearly: a guy holding up a fish, with a rowboat and some shacks in the background. The image is even clearer if I open my eyes. Fishing Village debuted in Prosperity, as those of you who have been paying attention know. And it gave +2 Actions next turn. There were some complaints during playtesting and I toned it down. It doesn't give you a card, but then Wharf gives you 4 cards, so it all works out. When you want Villages you often want a lot of them, and Fishing Village is a lot of Villages. In multiplayer there are groups that will open Fishing Village / Fishing Village; no-one wants to be left out.
Border Village meanwhile I can only see as the prototype version, which some of you know as the isotropic version; the published one has some computer art and it all just forms a mush for me. Border Village started out at $5, and I made it stronger by making it cost more. There's a trick you can't always do, is what I probably say in the Secret History. But today isn't about history, today is about the future. Well tomorrow by the time most of you read this, but well what's more future than tomorrow? The day after that? But I digress. Border Village is Village, but it only costs $1 and not even a Buy, if you're already getting a $5. It could have been phrased like Duchess. That would have been weird. While Haggler is the poster child for Hinterlands, Border Village is right behind it; you buy a thing and you get another thing. And that other thing may even want a Village.
Only one of these titans of Dominion can win this particular voting bracket thingy. The choice, as always, is yours.
