Title: You make the card: An F.DS community-created fan card! (Part 24)
Post by: GendoIkari on February 25, 2016, 10:34:53 am
After this, the only thing left will be to decide the art. Which will be tough of course. I'm hoping people will send in submissions for the art; I'll be happy if I get 3. I'd also appreciate some help from people who know how in making a card mockup. I can do some basic photoshop type stuff; but I figure it would be easier for those who have made fan card mockups; as they would have the templates and correct fonts and such already.

Submissions for art don't need to be card mockups, though. Just a link to an image that you think would be good. Of course, you'll probably want to wait until you know the name of the card.

If the gained card is an action, play it.

If you do, the player gaining the card puts it on top of his deck.

Here are some initial ideas for art submissions. Initially I was looking at potter & clay images (since they do a lot of "forming" in pottery) leading to the first image. Then I thought of glassblowing because torches can be more dramatic, and the fire, in a way, both destroys and forms something at the same time, hence reform.

The problem is, I've only found glassblowing pictures that are photographs, so I don't know if they would work as-is, as card art, which is usually digital art or paintings. Anyhow, here they are:

Well reform wins by a long shot. I'll try to find at least 1 image to use for a vote; then when a get a few we'll do the final vote. Anyone willing to help put images into a card template?

It's actually kind a sad that we needed 24 polls/parts for a card that ultimately is not substantially better than usual fan cards, I'd say, no? Or am I missing something?

I wouldn't say so. LastFootnote pointed out from the very beginning that this was a terrible way to actually make a good fan card. And he's right. I never expected this to result in a card that was better than average, or even all that good necessarily. I also never expected it to end up being so many threads; but then again almost half of the threads are runoffs for previous polls.

The idea was really just to see what a community-driven card would end up being. It was just meant as a silly experiment... kind of like Twitch plays Pokemon. Obviously not a good way to end up with a good game of Pokemon, but that wasn't the point.

Twitch makes a card. Not sure how we'll do that, but we need this.

Or twitch plays dominion. So we can have two twitch channels endlessly playing games against each other!

A cooler photo of a glass blower that almost looks like alchemy-style art:

So I don't want to get all the way up to the last thing and just give up on this; I've just been busy. And I'm out of town all next week. My hope is to just get 2-4 images to vote on; and hopefully to have those be actual card images. I still need help putting together an actual card mockup. So please send in any ideas; and when I get back I'll work on the mockups and making the last poll.

I'd really prefer a few bureaucrats on a table over some piece of paper. That meaning of Reform was a big part of why i suggested the name in the first place, snd it goes with the Bureaucrat-like Reaction as well as with the Remodel-top.
Don't know whether i'll have the time to look for such an image, though.

I had a look for a nice painting of Martin Luther nailing up his theses, but couldn't find any with suitable licences.

Personally I would like a painting instead of a picture. But a good one for reform may be hard to come by so I might not mind a picture with the right filters.

When I looked for images before, I wasn't really thinking along the lines of political or religious reform. But for what it's worth, here's an image of a bunch of notable Protestant Reformers at a table:

In case anyone is wondering what the folks on the other side of the table are doing, I think they represent Catholic authorities unsuccessfully attempting to blow out the candle of the Reformers, which may be alluding to the ritual of excommunication of Medieval times, which involved the symbolic act of extinguishing candles - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bell,_book,_and_candle#Ritual

Just to make this clear, i wasn't trying to claim any right to decide which direction we should go in just because i suggested the name. I was mostly stating what my idea behind the name was. Religious reform for example isn't exactly what i had in mind, but of course it makes sense to find a lot of those pictures if you look for medieval reform stuff...

I do! I'm glad to see this bumped; as I'd just forgotten all about it. Which is sad, given that we got all the way to the very last step. I'll try to make the final poll soon where we vote on the art.

I was going to use this, but still open to suggestions. I would really rather not use a picture.

That art is fine by me. I'd suggest doing a de-speckle or gaussian blur on it first, to get rid of the moire patterns.

Thanks. Gaussian blur makes it really out of focus but despeccle works.

Yeah, you would have to use a pretty small radius gaussian blur to avoid that, and then probably follow it up with a sharpen filter, etc.
